2008-2009 Ohio State Men's Track and Cross Country

to add to bk's great points as usual: this was the first meet of the outdoor season whereas it's basically midseason for the rest of the nation. acc for example i believe has their conf championships in like 2 weeks or so. it seems that the coaches mainly wanted to get their kids some work versus top flight competition to get ready for the big meet this weekend. they will be going all out in the dual and i expect a lot of regional qualifiers saturday b/c that natural rivalry brings out the best, and they do not want to lose. for those who didn't go last spring, it is not your typical track meet. it is short, sweet, intense and really fun to attend. hopefully you all can make it.
I did not attend and won't be able to this year but I did watch it on the Big Ten Network... it looked like a great meet. One other thing that makes it a non-typical meet: only the men run participate.

Congrats to Patrick on provisionally qualifying for Nationals... 6909 puts him at the top of the Big Ten performance list. He'll probably have to score in the 7300's if he wants to participate in the National Championships.

OSU roundup: The Dual goes to Michigan
Sunday, April 12, 2009 3:18 AM

Michigan defeated Ohio State 105-98 in The Dual track and field meet yesterday in Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium.

Adam Harris of the Wolverines won the 100-meter dash in 10.32 seconds, the 200 in 21.16 seconds and anchored the victorious 400 relay (41.02 seconds).

The 400 relay was a pivotal event, with Harris overtaking OSU anchor Blake Callahan of Whetstone at the tape by one one-hundredth of a second.

Thomas Murdaugh of Dublin Scioto led Ohio State, winning the 400 (47.01) and running on the first-place 1,600 relay (3:14.39). His effort in the 400 was a regional qualifying time.

it was a brutal day pretty much all around. throws won a lot of points, but they were not happy with any marks. distance choked. sprinters were dominated by harris, but he is impressive. 4x100 will improve when thomas and chekwa (chimdi attended for at least a portion btw) come in. personally it was a treat to watch murdaugh run for the first time...he was so smooth.

i know it's hollow in some respect, but i mentioned it might be better to have lost the battle (dual) to light a fire under their asses and go win the war (big10s) in may.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The Ohio State men's track and field team finished in second-place Saturday at the Louisville Invitational in Louisville, Ky.

The Buckeyes 71.5 points were not enough to unseat the host Cardinals, who took the title with 78 points. Arkansas State finished third with 28 points, while Western Kentucky was 16.5.

"We had a solid afternoon and picked up a couple regional marks in the pole vault and discus," head coach Robert Gary said after the meet. "The guys performed well."

The 4x100m relay team of Matt Comer, Brandon Woodard, Aaron Roberts and Stephen Robinson beat out the rest of the field with a time of 41.03. Louisville was second in 41.27.

Ohio State dominated the 800m run. In their first ever collegiate runs in the event, Cory Leslie took the title with a time of 1:52.69, while Jared Hall placed third in 1:55.23. Chris Fallon was sixth in 1:56.95, with Taylor Candella finishing just behind Fallon in seventh at 1:57.12.

Leslie followed up his victory in the 800m run with a triumph in the 1500m. The freshman broke the tape in 3:53.25, followed by Fallon in second at 3:56.61.

Great times by the young guns. Murdaugh, Leslie, and Hall are very talented with a high ceiling. Fallon was always a better distance guy I thought but those are some pretty solid times in the shorter distance events.
Where is Jake Edwards? He had such a strong senior year of track and XC and I haven't seen much from him since he got to OSU. I know he missed a lot of time with anemia but I would have guessed that would be cleared up by now.

Very nice 4x400 time... time is starting to drop. Could see them in the 3:04-05 range at the Big10's.

DES MOINES, Iowa - The 4x400m relay team of Matt Comer, Stephen Robinson, Brandon Woodard and Thomas Murdaugh directed an outstanding effort by the Ohio State men's track and field Saturday on the final day of the Drake Relays in Des Moines, Iowa.

Running alongside some of the best teams in the country, Ohio State placed second with an NCAA provisional time of 3:07.65, the Big Ten's second-best time this season. Baylor, the team that qualified second behind the Buckeyes in the preliminary heats, overtook the Scarlet and Gray Saturday with a run of 3:05.11.

"Without question the highlight of the meet was the 4x400," Ohio State head coach Robert Gary said at the conclusion of the competition. "Placing second behind a perennial powerhouse like Baylor shows that we can run with the best in the NCAA."

Storms passed through the Des Moines area for most of the day Saturday. The rain and wind caused problems in many events, and Gary believes the 4x400 was one of them:

"If the weather was better, I think this team is definitely capable of a time around 3:05 -- Coach Ed Beathea has done a great job with those guys."

Very nice showing at one of the tougher relay meets. The Drake Relays usually pull in a quality field and the Buckeyes put up a nice showing. Too bad See has had to miss so much of the season. He would have been a tremendous help in the Big 10 championships if you would have been healthy all season.

Yes, very good showing by the 4x400. Hanging with Baylor should give this relay some confidence.

See still has a couple of meets where he can qualify for the Big 10 Championships (Jesse Owens Classic this weekend, Cedarville next weekend). I'm not sure what the extent of his injuries were or how much Gary would like him to run. My guess is if he can run the 1500 he'll do so.

Track and field: Sprinter on course for big finish
Senior hopes to lead Buckeyes relay team to spot in NCAA finals
Friday, May 1, 2009 2:52 AM
By Tom Reed

Ohio State senior sprinter Matt Comer could see the finish line approaching -- and the mere sight of it raised his level of anxiety.

Timing is everything in track and college graduation. Comer's athletic and academic careers are concluding at a time when the economy is bad and good jobs are about as attainable as 4-minute miles.

"I had been stressed out about a lot of things and one of them was whether I would be able to find a job," Comer said. "You read the statistics and hear about how many college graduates end up living at home because they can't find work in their field."

Comer is a lucky one. His personality and persistence have helped land employment in sports marketing. His newfound job also has helped him in regaining his athletic focus.

He looks to take another step toward a spot in the NCAA championships this weekend at the 24th Jesse Owens Track Classic. The invitational, which attracts some of the nation's top college and post-collegiate runners, begins this afternoon and runs through Saturday at the Jesse Owens Memorial Track.

"Matt is one of our leaders, and when he's rockin' and rollin' for us, it's really infectious," Buckeyes' men's track coach Robert Gary said. "But when he's down and a little apathetic, it's also a factor in a negative way."

On Saturday, Comer will run the 400-meter dash and also run the second leg on the Buckeyes' stellar 1,600-meter relay team. The quartet, which includes freshman Thomas Murdaugh and juniors Stephen Robinson and Brandon Woodard, has a legitimate shot at reaching the NCAA Championships final in June.

COLUMBUS, Ohio - Rain and clouds on Friday gave way to sunny skies for day two of the 24th Jesse Owens Classic as the Ohio State men's track and field team enjoyed a successful afternoon of competition.

Jeff See dominated the mile run in his first home meet of the year. He bested the regional qualifying time with a run of 4:04.95. Teammates John Ealy (fourth), Christopher Olinger (seventh) and Adam Green (eighth) finished in the Top 10.

The Buckeyes continued their supremacy over the Big Ten in the 4x400m with their regional qualifying time of 3:08.92, the third-fastest in the Big Ten on the year. Oklahoma challenged the Buckeyes for most of the race, before Thomas Murdaugh pulled away on the final leg. Penn State finished fourth.

Ohio State was a winner in the 4x100m relay, crossing the finish line in the Big Ten's second-best time on the year at 40.51, a regional qualifying mark. Michigan, led by a late charge from Adam Harris took second, a week after setting the top conference time at the Penn Relays.

Thomas Murdaugh captured the title in the 400m dash, setting a regional qualifying time of 46.58, the Big Ten's second-best this season. Penn State junior Mike Cadau ran neck-and-neck with Murdaugh for the first 300-meters, but faded down the stretch. Cadau still managed to best the regional qualifying time with his run of 46.79.
