Mr Track did his best and any time we finish ahead of sCum it is always a good meet. Flash Thomas and Chekwa certainly help the track team by getting some extra points. Flash finish fourth in the 100 which is very good for a guy who has probably not practiced his sprint on a consistent basis.

What a great meet to watch from a general track fan standpoint and a great result for Buckeye fans. There was no way anyone was catching Minnesota the way they piled points up in the distance races, particularly the 5K and 10K. IMO there were two major factors that put Ohio State in a position to top Michigan going into the 4x400:

1) The pre-meet predictor only had Ohio State scoring 8 points in the field. They performed superbly in the field and ended up with 25 points. That just about makes up the difference between the predicted 83 and the actual 103 they scored.

2) Michigan dropping the baton in the 4x100 relay. If Michigan finishes that race they are at worst 3rd (most likely would have finished 1st or 2nd) and beat Ohio State by three points in the final standings.

Going into the 4x400 Michigan was ahead of Ohio State 95-93 (Minnesota had already clinched the title after their 5K runners went 1-3-4). Going into the final hand-off Illinois had a 10 meter lead on Ohio State. Murdaugh was able to catch Masheto (the open 400 winner, 0.02 seconds ahead of Murdaugh) at the end of the back stretch but Masheto pulled out to a 3-5 meter lead by the end of the 2nd curve. Murdaugh was somehow able to find another gear and nipped Masheto at the finish line. Michigan finished 4th and the 5 point difference allowed the Buckeyes to capture the team runner-up position.

The only two teams I was really wrong were Ohio State and Purdue... Purdue got 59 out of its 81 points in the field so they snuck up on some people with that performance. Wisconsin under-performed which led to their 6th place finish... that has to be one of their worst finishes in years.

Been out for a while... here is an update from this weekend's Regional meet at the University of Louisville. Congrats to White, See and Murdaugh for qualifying to the NCAA National Championships!

The Ohio State men's track and field team qualified three more athletes for the 2009 NCAA Track and Field Championships with an overall balanced effort that included one distance, one middle distance runner and one sprinter.

One decathlete and one thrower are also expected to hopefully join the mix when at-large berths are announced early next week. Patrick Woods is expected to make the championship field in the decathlon and Patrick Whalen is a strong candidate to earn a spot in the shot put.

Sophomore Daniel White qualified for the NCAA's with his impressive fifth-place showing in the 800m run. White ran a PR time of 1:49.34 and held off a tough field down the final stretch to earn the right to represent Ohio State in two weeks in Fayetteville.

"Dan did a great job today," head coach Robert Gary said. "He was very disappointed by not making the finals at the Big Ten meet and that really motivated him, I think. He did a really good job to make the finals and today he ran a very nice race, held his form and did a really good job staying focused."

Senior All-American Jeff See will once again represent the Buckeyes at the NCAA championships in the 1500m after his fifth-place run in a time of 3:49.73. See finished fifth overall in the event last season.

Murdaugh is an animal. 45.779 as a frosh? Woah!!! So the 4x4 is done? Bummer I was hoping to see them compete at nationals.
I did not see where the 4x4 did not qualify just that they finished 10th. Couldn't they have qualified earlier in the season:huh:

The 4x400 qualified for and ran at the Regional meet this weekend. Unlike most other events the 4x400 is a timed final... no prelims on Friday. The Bucks were in the hot heat with the other fastest teams in the Regional (Western Kentucky, Kentucky, Auburn, LSU, Illinois) so it gave them a good shot to run a good time. The Bucks were in last place when Murdaugh got the baton. As much of a beast as he is when you get to this level you can only make up tenths of a second not half a second to seconds. He did get them up to 6th in the heat but they ended up 10th overall because of the timed final. In fact the winner (Miss. St) came from the second heat. The Bucks would have had to run their best time of the season by a second or two to be in position to qualify for Nationals. The top 3 places in relays (top 5 in individual events) automatically qualified for nationals. Unfortunately I don't think the Bucks will get an at-large bid... there are a number of teams ahead of them on the performance list that will get chosen before the Bucks.

With that said the Bucks only lose Comer off their 4x400 so they have a chance at being a very good relay next year.

Ohio State results from yesterday:

400m - Thomas Murdaugh 3rd in his heat with a time of 46.35. Finishing 3rd automatically qualified him for the semi-finals which will run on Friday at 7:25PM CST.
800m - Dan White finished last in his heat with a time of 1:51.74. Dan's season is finished.
Shot Put - Patrick Whalen finished 23rd out of 26 throwers with a best toss of 17.61m. The cutoff for qualifying for the "semi" finals was 12th place (18.28m).
Decathlon - Patrick Woods sits in 16th place at the end of day 1 with a score of 3833. 8th place (All-American status) is 156 points ahead of Woods so if he has a great day 2 he has an outside shot at placing.

Today's events:
Decathlon, Day 2 - Patrick Woods - Events: 110m hurdles, Discus, Pole Vault, Javelin, 1500m run. Starts at 2:30PM CST.
1500m Run - Jeff See. Top 3 in each heat (3 heats total) plus the next 3 best times advance to the final. Starts at 8:10 CST.

If anyone is interested Jeff See is just about ready to run his 1500m prelim. Here is a live feed of the meet:

CBS College Sports All-Access

Edit 1: Jeff finished 4th in his heat with a time of 3:40:46. Top 3 automatically qualify for finals then the next 3 best times also qualify... hopefully that's fast enough to get him in...

Edit 2: Heat 2 winner was 3:44.22 and 4th place was 3:45.13... that bodes very well for Jeff.

Edit 3: Heat 3 winner was 3:41.39 and 4th place was 3:42.18. That will qualify Jeff to the finals with the 4th best time. All three "at-large" runners were from the first heat.

Congrats Jeff and good luck on Saturday!

Woods finished 15th in the decathlon with 7316 points. Even if he would have replicated his Big Ten championship performance he would have fallen ~150 points short of All-American status (8th place).

Thomas Murdaugh will be running in the first semi-final heat of the 400m dash at 7:25PM CST. Top 4 from each semi-final plus the next fastest time qualify for tomorrow's finals.
