So the coaches don't trust Minor and Brown anymore, but yet "a core group of Grady, Minor, Brown and McGuffie would be nice"??? Grady isn't a tailback and McGuffie is a true freshman. That group reminds me a lot of your DB's this year. Overhyped freshmen and a ball of mediocrity.
I really don't think it even matters. As long as the line is solid, there will be a running game. Long, Kraus, and Ciulla are seniors, but everyone else is back. Just put guys in there who don't drop the ball (ok, that probably rules out Brown) and the rushing game will be productive. And it would figure that the only place I've ever seen McGuffie called "overhyped" is the Buckeye fan site. He'll be fine.

Normally i'd roll my eyes at a team suspending their star verse a weak team, but i'll accept it right now, because Michigan has a lot more to lose by going down to Eastern; and its not an impossible result.
Roll your eyes at suspending him against a weak team? What, you think they should wait until the MSU game just to boost the degree of difficulty a little? The infraction was discovered, and Manningham was suspended, and that's how it goes. Glad you'll accept it - I'll notify the UM athletic department of your decision.

So your going to lose Jake Long and arguably the best RB in tsun history and be just fine in the running game...no worries. Breaking in a new QB and probably losing your best WR won't hurt either I'm sure. Nothing like an inexperienced and unproven passing attack to take the pressure of an inexperienced and unproven running attack.

But I forgot, there's always that stifiling defense and lights out special teams to fall back on.

I would ask if you guys seriously believe this stuff but I know after the past few years...you do.

I didn't say "just as good." I said "just fine." We've lost a lot of good running backs over the years and a lot of offensive linemen and somehow survived. Case in point: Steve Hutchinson and Jeff Backus both left in 2001, along with Anthony Thomas, whose record Mike Hart is about to break, and the team managed over 2,000 rushing yards the next year. I didn't say the running game would roll on unaffected. I said it would be productive. It won't exactly fold up and die. You know, kind of like how the OSU offense didn't roll over and die upon the loss of the Heisman Trophy winner.

Let's look at this a different way. When Henne is nicked up, the offense takes a big step back... perhaps that will be a smaller step by next season. Hart is the heart and soul of that offense, and there is a significant dropoff when he's out.

What will the dropoff be when not just one are out, but all three of Henne, Hart & Long... not to mention possibly MM & AA as well?

UM replaced Perry nicely, with an instant star in Hart. However, they also had the luxury of chucking the ball up to a dominant jumpball WR.

The guys replacing the '06 offense all got to play significant support roles the year before they took over. Robo, Hartline and Beanie all were contributors, I'm sure you remember them from The Game at least. The backup OL also got plenty of PT last year and strangely enough are ready to play.

Boeckman was not able to get significant PT in '06 and is still the weakest link in our offense. Go figure.

I heard the same noise from tsun land and some of their posters on this board coming into '07 regarding the defense. We have athletes, they won't just fold up, will be good enough etc....how's that working out so far?

Grady is excellent between the tackles, a very tough inside runner. Brandon Saine is a true freshman and you guys are shitting yourselves over this guy, why can't Michigan be excited about Sam McGuffie? Minor's looked better recently, being more decisive with his cuts. Brown may still have his cast from his off-season surgery, think that might have something to do with not holding the ball?

Come on. Michigan never produces good linemen, it's one and done man, you know that  Nor do they have good RBs in college. Clearly we're going to rush for 2 ypc next year every game, because we're losing all the talent and bringing in no one.

Just like they have talented athletes to plug in the secondary and play good but not great defense?

Grady is excellent between the tackles, a very tough inside runner.

his career average of 3.8 ypc illustrates that nicely.

Brandon Saine is a true freshman and you guys are shitting yourselves over this guy,

provided he stays healthy for the rest of the year, he's on pace to eclipse what grady has done in 2 seasons in all of 9 games.

why can't Michigan be excited about Sam McGuffie?

because he's a high school senior, that has been hobbled all year, and underperforming as a result.

Minor's looked better recently, being more decisive with his cuts. Brown may still have his cast from his off-season surgery, think that might have something to do with not holding the ball?

you'd better hope this is true.

By "Brown" we're talking about Carlos Brown, right? The same RB that was tried at CB this spring? What does that say about the coaches confidence in him as a running back when they move him to corner?

... or their faith in the players they've actually recruited as corners?

In the past three weeks - pretty well, actually. Only 25 points in three games, which is not too shabby. Not the greatest offenses in the world, but still.

And regarding the offense, here's a possible starting lineup for next year, even assuming Manningham leaves:
QB - Ryan Mallett
WR - Greg Mathews
WR - Junior Hemingway
RB - Brandon Minor
RB - Kevin Grady
TE - Mike Massey or Carson Butler
LT - Perry Dorrestein
LG - Jeremy Ciulla
C - Justin Boren
RG - Tim McAvoy
RT - Stephen Schilling

How is that not a lineup that's seen plenty of support time? That doesn't even take into account next year's freshmen that might see time - McGuffie, Stonum, O'Neill, etc.

Since you know Grady so well, you do know he usually comes in on 3rd and 1 type deals?

I wasn't aware Saine was stuck behind a four year starter who gets way more carries than he needs. I could be mistaken.

Yes, because one injury is so awful. It's not like when he's healthy he puts up obscene numbers against great competition.
