Web extra: It's Tressel 1, Rodriguez 0 already in Big Ten

By DREW SHARP, Detroit Free Press

It?s still basketball season and already Rich Rodriguez is 0-1 against Ohio State.

Quarterback Terrelle Pryor, the latest football recruiting deity, announced Wednesday what had been suspected for more than a month ? that he?ll play for Jim Tressel.

The heavens didn?t crash down upon Ann Arbor. It?s a personal hunch, but odds are Michigan football will survive and even prosper.

There?s nonetheless disappointment for Wolverines fans because Rodriguez offered a natural fit for Pryor ? the philosophical style he craved and the likelihood of an immediate starting job.

But it wasn?t enough.

Recruiting victories are largely symbolic, but considering the Wolverines haven?t beaten Tressel and Ohio State on the field the past four years, any kind of triumph would have been appreciated.

U-M SPRING FOOTBALL

Rich Rodriguez gives QBs equal reps; starter won't be named soon

BY SHAWN WINDSOR ? FREE PRESS SPORTS WRITER ? March 21, 2008

Rich Rodriguez watched his new team practice for the first time in full pads Thursday afternoon. He liked the intensity. He liked that he saw a little improvement in the players' grasp of his new system. But he didn't like the conditioning level.
I think they felt in practice that our conditioning still has a long way to go," he said. "We thought we were in shape, but not quite."
As for the quarterback competition, Nick Sheridan, Steven Threet and David Cone all got equal reps, Rodriguez said.

It's worth pointing out in the article above that RB Carlos Brown broke a finger (weight lifting accident) and will be out the majority of the spring.

Brown was one of the candidates to take snaps as the "running" QB.

By the way I've heard the UM S&C program described pre-Barwis, they probably would have been impressed by rigorous calisthenics.

Yeah, Gittleson wasn't well liked by most fans. Supposedly, he was one of the pioneers in the field, but most felt as if time past him by.

Barwis is an upgrade, but probably no better than anyone else at a major program.

I'm hearing that UM is counting on a verbal from Tate Forcier and/or Kevin Newsome, though it looks like Newsome is going the baseball route for now.
That rumor is heavy on assumption and speculation, from what I've seen.

WTH does that mean?
Eastern? Western? Greek? Ancient? Hellinistic? Medeival? Modern?
Does RR/scUM even have a philosophical style (other than grabbing their ankles on the 3rd Sat in Nov?)

Drew Sharp..not TOO sharp.

I know, I was challenging the rumor more than you... Forcier is a solid possibility with his ties to UM (Jason). With LSU, Aub, Ore & UM offers already, will he blow up and be harder to obtain?

It's not a strong suit of the UM beat writers... ask their fans

Gah. Drew Sharp is a moron. He writes probably one worthwhile article a month....sadly, the Freep makes him fill its pages at least two or three times a week. Fortunately Sharp is not really a "beat writer" - simply a columnist on all things related to Detroit sports - and his scrawlings are nothing more than the rambling opinions of a man whose glass would be forever half empty if he could only find some damn water, and can be ignored.
