MICHIGAN PERSONALITIES AS 'LORD OF THE RINGS' CHARACTERS!

Gandalf: Lloyd Carr.

Like Gandalf, Lloyd is old, cranky, and venerable. He is wise, but not infallible. Lloyd and Gandalf are set in their ways and is unlikely to change. They have led the forces of good through many battles. Seemingly resurrected (Lloyd the White) with an 11-2 season after being left for dead after a 7-5 season (Lloyd the Grey), he is on a quest culminating with one last battle (2007 Championship) before he heads into the West (retirement.)

Aragorn: Chad Henne

Like Aragorn, Chad Henne was born destined to lead. However, they both are late bloomers and do not seem to fully develop their leadership skills until the end of their respective journeys. Aragorn takes command from Gandalf, but remains largely independent in battle. His closest compatriot is Legolas, with whom he forms one of the most effective duos to ever grace a battlefield. If Henne can overcome the opposition in his final battles as did Aragorn, he is destined to become King (of the quarterbacks in the 2008 NFL draft). On a side note, both Henne and Viggo Mortensen have ginormous butt-chins. Coincidence?

Legolas: Mario Manningham

Legolas and Mario Manningham both possess lightning-quick speed and uncanny grace while in battle. Manningham, like Legolas, is not a leader, but is near the top of the ranks and influences those who fight alongside him. Both Legolas and Manningham are feared warriors whose names are known throughout the land and whose tales are told in ballads and on SportsCenter, respectively.

Gimli: Justin Boren
Justin Boren is relatively new to the group in terms of playing time and has will eventually learn to function with Henne, just as Gimli met Aragorn and the two adapted to each other. While physical size is not a common factor between Gimli and Boren, they are both aggressive, fearless, and throw themselves in front of danger for their leader. This year, "we'll see what one center can do!"Frodo: Mike Hart

Who else will carry the burden? As Frodo was the heart of the Fellowship, Hart is the heart (couldn't resist!) of the Michigan football team. He constantly takes the most difficult path to success (through linebackers!) and is on a seemingly never ending quest to get a small object (football) to a destination far away (the end zone). Success of the Fellowship's mission rests in Frodo's hands, and one would be hard-pressed to argue against the fact that the success of the 2007 Wolverines lie in Hart's.

Sam: Jake Long

Where would Frodo be without his Sam? Jake Long is a major key to Hart's success, just as Sam was Frodo's main support system. Would Hart be able to gain nearly 100 yards a game if Long weren't dominating the left side of the offensive line? Would Frodo have made it up Mount Doom if Sam wasn't there to carry him? In both cases, the answer is a resounding "no."

Mario Manningham was interviewed on the Serius radio nfl network by Tim and Pat today. Let me just say that MM does not come of with the same polish that Gonzo exhibited in his interviews last year. But MM is one funny dude. Manningham is one guy that i am relieved to see heading on down the road to the pros without ever really hurting the Buckeyes in a game.

Another interesting tid-bit. Pat Kerwin said there is a sizable group fo GM's that are excited that they may be able to pick up Mike Hart as a free-agent. Mel Kiper was talking in the second round a day or two ago. If that isn't two ends of the spectrum.

What's this, academic mischief at Michigan?

By Sean McClelland
Staff Writer

Thursday, March 20, 2008
Next time somebody tries to tell you about Michigan's academic superiority relative to Ohio State, just laugh.
And then direct that person to a recent four-part series in the Ann Arbor News detailing how UM football players earn academic credit for doing little or nothing.
Yes, we've all heard about such shenanigans at different schools, including OSU. But this is Michigan, which over the years has smugly insisted its academic standards are more rigorous than most of its competitors.
Not that anyone actually believed that, but now there might be actual proof that it's false. Cont....

Unfortunately this story isn't limited to U of M. Any school that fronts the cost of an athlete's "education"... scratch that... that fronts the cost of an athlete's elgibility is going to do all that they can to see to it that the athlete remains elgible. Education may, or may not, be a part of the process.

NKU's athletic program is tiny compared to a Big 10 school, yet I get forms to fill out on all the athletes in my English courses regarding grades, attendance, homework and major assignments and attitude. Study tables and "brain" coaches are made available, even required.

Would that such paternal care could be visited on all our elementary schools.

All true.....yet it's not even as much about eligibility any more, as graduation, I think. Now that the NCAA is watching graduation rates and taking away schollies as punishment for not staying up to snuff in that category, the quasi-legal classroom calisthenics are going to be even more widespread. There's a reason the NCAA has yet to bother listening to those who are calling for a 50% graduation rate to be eligible for postseason play. No school is going to let their meatheaded offensive lineman's D-minuses stand in the way of the multi-million dollar bowl payout. Given the choice between the rulebook and the megabucks, I think the rulebook loses every time.

Didn't want to pollute the TP thread with this. It's less about TP, and much more of an accurate reflection of tsun fans being, well... scUM.

At least it gives us an early start to collecting bulletin board material for Nov 22nd.

Wolverines fans react: Most glad Pryor didn't come to Michigan

March 23, 2008

- "Pryor and Ohio State are a perfect fit. There was something about him that just smelled similar to the smell coming out of Columbus. What smells the most is how this kid passed over the opportunity to have the starting quarterback position at Michigan for four years, while running an offense that was made for him. It makes me wonder what exactly Coach Tress is selling down in Ohio." Aaron Jones, Milwaukee

- "Terrelle Pryor is a procrastinator, talks out of both sides of his mouth, is a hypocrite, a liar and is only interested in money. Heck, he's practically a member of Congress." Arthur Wakeley, Little Elm, Texas

- "It's disappointing that Michigan wasn't able to obtain Pryor, but it certainly isn't the end of the world. Lots of players have garnered massive attention and for whatever reason, don't live up to the hype. Pryor sounds like he's the 'real deal' and will probably be a very successful player in college. But there are other kids out there who are equally talented. They just aren't on the radar yet. Class of 2009 is coming." Nancy Sentipal, Fredericksburg, Va.

- "Hail to the Victors! Finally we got a break. Now can we just concentrate on speeding up and powering up the defense, and developing the best of the conventional quarterbacks we already have on the roster. The Michigan tradition is team victory, not hotshot part-time basketball players prancing into the end zone with the ball in one hand." Larry Taylor, Dallas

- "Terrelle should have chosen Michigan for two reasons. The first, Michigan's offense best suits his abilities, and he would start immediately, which would allow for more of preparation for the NFL. The second reason, Michigan is better represented in the NFL by its former quarterbacks than Ohio State. Terrelle could join the likes of Tom Brady, Jim Harbaugh, Todd Collins, Elvis Grbac, Brian Griese and John Navarre in the history of great Michigan quarterbacks. Let the comparisons begin." Jay Rousse, Holly Springs, N.C.

WTH are these ppl talking about. Sour grapes much. First off, that smell from Columbus is VICTORY! Second, dude from Dallas is saying he is happy TP didnt go to scUM, bc now they can get to work on their conventional QB's?????? Right. Lasty guy from N.C., TP signing to scUM would allow him to start and have more time to prepare for the NFL?? Please tell me which pro teams are running any form of the option. I would think he will get more than prepared in our Pro-style Off. Nice try BTW trying to pass off past QB success on this current staff. Apples to Apples please!!

You would think, but Ohio State's track record of pro QBs is about as impressive as Michigan's track record of pro RBs.

It's about the coaches. Under JT, we've had Krenzel win a few games as a starter for the Bears, and Troy is entering his second year, possibly starting at some point this year. Not overtly impressive...yet. Under DickRod, you have no "track record".

Different movie franchise - but given Gabe Watson's academic peregrination - maybe we ought to have a re-do with a Hogwarts theme ...
Watson's transcript revealed more about his academic career:
....
Watson earned four A's, one in comparative black art and three in nontraditional courses.
Eerily close to Defense Against the Black Arts ...

There is also the before and after picture for most popular course choices by Athletes prior to and after a beefing up of previously most popular Sports Management path of studies.
Basten worked in Michigan's admissions office before becoming a faculty member, and he said he knows about the compromises made when admitting some athletes. He said he's seen a previous school president get involved in the process.
Basten also helped spawn recent changes to toughen kinesiology's sport management major.
That, in turn, caused many athletes to shift their educational track into a relatively unstructured degree program called general studies.
Asked if Michigan could offer its student-athletes an academic experience similar to that of a typical student and still compete at the highest levels athletically, Basten didn't hesitate.
"No," he said.

True, but Krenzel is out of the league, Zwick never made it, and Smith has the odds significantly stacked against him. Two fifth rounders and a UDFA? As OC at Tulane, Rodriguez did help Shaun King become a second rounder in his offense.

I don't think an argument can be made either way. Tressel developed Troy Smith into a Heisman winner, D-Rod developed Shaun King into a second rounder.

Neither have anyone in the league tearing it up, although Troy may become a starter this year.

I just think it's silly for Michigan fans/staff to use the argument we don't devolop pro quarterbacks. There just isn't a large enough sample size at this point. Anyways, I'm glad Terrelle saw through it.

lol at using Zwick as an example.

Matt Guttierez is more proof that the Michigan mystique when it comes to quarterbacks is non-existent.

Gutierrez has a job in the NFL on the same squad as some pretty good QB in New England who went to......

No, but moreso than Krenzel or Smith (so far)
