2007 tOSU Spring Practice (official thread)

Spring depth chart. Moeller moving to S and Grant moving outside have been discussed upthread. Schoenhoft is now #11 and Connor Smith at center because Cordle is the third tackle and Whaley is taking reps at fullback. Coleman is backing up O'Neal at S.

Not listed:
Henton (will be in the QB battle)
Olson
B. Smith
Miller
Dublin
Lukens (may have retired)
M. Johnson (said to be coming along)
Lane
Russell (no contact this spring)

Some other interesting nuggets:
  • Boeckman faster than Troy 2 years ago in the 40. How is that possible?
  • Rumors abounded, but Rose is not being looked at as a possible DT.
  • Nice quotes on Ben Person, he's a massive presence, hopefully his time is now.

Boeckman being faster in the shuttle drill would be a bigger surprise... Troy is more quick (agile) than fast. Henne & Zwick have decent straight line speed (see NC ST 04 scramble), it's their agility that is lacking. Also, Troy's added bulk, which helped him endure wicked UM hits, slowed him down a bit, imo (vs 04 UM troy).

Wasn't Anderson injured in the Iowa game?
Yes, he got blocked into someone on a KR, IIRC.

Jim Tressel, head coach

On Ohio State young players in the secondary

"One guy who is a good player is Anderson Russell. He is a "no contact" this spring and is working his way back (after injury in 2006). He is ahead of schedule, but he will not scrimmage. We do expect a lot from him in the fall.

Jaramio O'Neal, we hope he is one of the old guys now with his experience level. Nick Patterson is progressing well and Aaron Gant did not redshirt last year and was a major contributor on special teams. Kurt Coleman can play inside or outside. He is a heck of a player. Grant Schwartz will get his first look at running our stuff and get used to our defensive looks. Tyler Moeller moved from linebacker. He has the potential to be an outstanding downhill safety.
If you look at it last year, we played 75 percent of our snaps in nickel and 100 in base. The world (of football) is so spread out now."

College football: Buckeyes on lookout for senior leadership

Wednesday, March 28, 2007 3:37 AM

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

While folks were sounding the alarm before the 2006 season -- the defense lost nine starters! -- Ohio State football coach Jim Tressel was the voice of reason. "I thought we had a chance to be a very good team," Tressel said then and repeated yesterday, "because we were going to have excellent leadership."

It'd be nice to see what Chris Wells can do as the starter. He fumbled more than I would like last year. (1 fumble is more than I like, though.) But Eddie George fumbled as a freshman, too. If he fixes his fumbling, I see a kick-ass player in him.

I'd also like to see what Maurice Wells can do late in a game. With Chris Wells constantly pounding on the defense, they'd hopefully be tired enough for Maurice Wells to run circles around them.
