Let's see...

Future first rounders:

Lawrence Wilson - has the size and speed the NFL loves, and he's not just numbers, he's a player.

Vernon Gholston - Oh yeah, first rounder.

Malcolm Jenkins - Best corner in the league next year

Laurinitis - Possibly. Linebackers don't get drafted that high unless they're A.J. Hawk. I'm not ready to annoint the Animal to Hawk status.

Robert Rose - In a few years, he will be. NFL loves pass rushers.

Anderson Russell - In a few years, he'll be in the first. A lot of potential, and he's a gamer.

Anyone else ready to step into the 1st round?

With a monster year Grant could be drafted high, maybe not first round, but high.

VERY early to make a call, but it seems like Chekwa or Coleman are on track thus far to be very good.

Laurinaitis is very comparable to A.J. Hawk, and I think Laurinaitis had a better sophomore season than Hawk's sophomore season. Hawk had 106 tackles and 2 interceptions his sophomore year and Laurinaitis had 115 tackles and 5 interceptions. Laurinaitis also won the Nagurski award and was the finalist for the Butkus award. Which are greater accomplishments then Hawk during his sophomore year. Although I know you cannot say Laurinaitis is A.J. Hawk yet, but I actually think Laurinaitis is going to be better than Hawk if he keeps this pace up. But, still I think Laurinaitis will be a no doubt first rounder if he keeps these numbers up.

Also, does anyone know if Laurinaitis is thinking of staying his senior year? I know it is a little early to be asking, but I have heard that he will stay.

Looks like we could have a slew of first rounders on this year's defense, just so much talent.
They almost all look like first rounders to must of us...including me, but you need to try to look without your Scarlet & Gray glasses on. Trying to predict who will be a first rounder next year is hard, yet alone in two years. Too many factors to add in...combine, interviews, injuries, on field performance, etc., etc....That 2002 defense had 2 first rounders (Gamble and Smith), 2005 had 3 (Hawk, Carp, Whitner..probably 4 with Jenkins).
I'd say looking now, Jenkins is sure fire, Laurinaitis has a really good shot and big Vern just based on his strength/measurables. The rest I need to see more of on the field.

As we get closer to the season, time to see who everyone thinks will be the key guy in each area:

Safety: the biggest area of concern, at least for me, so it gets the most discussion. This position has the potential to be scary, or scary good. Russell's 100% return goes a long way to solidifying the position. Time is ticking for JamO and Patterson, Gant and Schwartz are waiting in the wings. Will a true frosh step up? (I was tempted to pick Clifford, but I'm old-school when it comes to starting true freshmen). I'll go with Coleman. Sounds like he's aggressive to the ball and tackles well.

Tackle: guys like Denlinger and Larimore are lunch-pail types who will be solid. Worthington could be a real difference-maker here. With the Bucks' zone blitz schemes, DW could be a factor in the pass rush, or even underneath coverage. The question is how he will stand up against the power run game.

Corner: Jenkins is an obvious stud, Washington is making strides. Had Amos not gotten hurt, this would be a toss-up. I'll go with Washington to become a Fox-type of corner. What do I mean by that? He'll be tested and respond. Not quite as physical, but another year of reps can't hurt.

End: Easy to pick Vern as the key, but I'll argue that Wilson can have as big of a year. You would think that teams would have to scheme their pass blocking to account for Gholston, which means that the other end should see single blocking. Tempted to go with Rose here, but Wilson's experience gives him a chance to really make a difference.

LB: The key here is Marcus Freeman being a game-changer. Don't get me wrong, he's been solid. Now it's time to take the next step. Everyone is looking at Laurinaitis, but if Freeman can be stout against the run, and rush the passer now and then, he can have that type of year we have all been waiting for from him.

I'm just killing time here, but it beats watching baseball/arena football/golf. :wink2:

what is the latest on Andre Amos?

Hey folks,
first I want to say that I find this board to be the most credible of the Ohio State fan websites on the net. I really appreciate and respect the opinions of the regular posters on this site. I rarely post anything, but frequently read the posts on this board to get caught up. Please keep up the good work.

My question is about Amos. Is he expected to be full go for this season? I'm not totally sold on Washington, and I thought Amos looked better than Washington last season (although not by much). I figure both will be much better this season with more experience, and I'm hoping for each guy to push each other and make each other better.

We have a lot of questions , just as last year, some because of injuries that happened and some because of the Title game in which a lot of performances weren't up to snuff,JMO.
We have the talent on this team, we just need people to step up.
Russel and Coleman I think will be the starters.
we really need the Dt and linebackers to improve. Freeman played solid and in his 2nd year of starting I look for him to shine and the same goes for the other LB positon, Grant, Terry , we have many to pick from.
If Gholston develops into a Wilkinson he could be gone after this year.
But overall I have confidence that the coaches and players will make us proud.

Ohio State's young defense slow in learning curve

Thursday, September 06, 2007Doug Lesmerises
Plain Dealer Reporter
Columbus- Ohio State broke in a new set of skill players on offense last Saturday, but the 38-6 win over Youngstown State also showed the Buckeye coaches how young their supposedly more experienced defense is.
"It's amazing, some mistakes that you see, you're dumbfounded," Ohio State defensive coordinator Jim Heacock said Wednesday. "You think everybody should know that, but they're just kids."

Taking up the slack

The competition is on between sophomore Rob Rose and freshman Cameron Heyward to become the starter at the defensive end spot vacated by Lawrence Wilson, who suffered a broken right leg. Defensive coordinator Jim Heacock said he likes watching the competition.
