I agree. Our D might give up a FG, but I don't think they'll be giving up any TDs

I am a bit concerned about our run D. We gave up 139 yards to PSU. Next we face PJ Hill, Mendenhall and Hart, no pushovers. If we don't stiffen up, we might get burned by these backs, especially Hart.

Honestly, I think it was a calculated risk in the game plan. We reinforced the Pass D to slow them down and ran up the score on offense forcing them to throw more to keep up. After the first drive we collapsed on the run more as they crossed midfield and the pass D caused several of their punts and that Morelli interception. I think the early nickel coverage on third and short was an example of that. I think it was a designed system... but I'd be concerned if the same softness reappeared at Wisky.

I agree. I think Ohio State was forcing Penn State to run the ball. They took away Morelli's conservative passing game, in hopes to make him make mistakes later in the game. And yards are just yards. They're fun to talk about and compare, but they don't mean poop when it comes to who won the game.

The other thing is 139 yards rushing really isn't that much for a team. We had almost that much in the first half.

That defense was once again absolutely outstanding. They let PSU get that early touchdown, which could have been a little scheme on our part, a little scheme on their part, a little adreniline coming from the crowd, whatever. But once that happened, it was lights out. Something like 1/3 of their total yardage for the game came on that opening drive.

PSU was probably one of the more balanced teams we have faced all year. Wisconsin is all run so no fear whatsoever in our D going against a one dimensional offense. Illinois I don't think has the talent yet, although they could give us a game. UM, as long as Henne is healthy, we should be OK. :wink: Seriously, though, Manningham and Hart scare me, but Henne is very similar to Morelli in my mind. He will not be able to handle the heat our defense will bring.

When your first reaction after watching a game is that our defense struggled, then you look and see thay had <250 total yds and 10 points, it gives you some perspective of how good the defense really is.

The only offense we fact in the last 3 games that has a QB that can keep us off the running game is tsun and thats a big IF Henne is healthy.

I didn't see the game and will return to North Carolina only later today. It is important to remember that we have a coach who plays chess, not checkers. He plans defensive and offensive schemes weeks in advance, showing future opponents only what he wants to show them.

The goal is to win games, not lead NCAA statistics tables. If you have Wisconsin next week and you feel that their greatest threat lies in their running attack, you don't tip your hand by trying to crush PSU's running attack in a game you are winning comfortably.

The only team in the nation that comes close to scaring me for our Defense... is sadly... Michigan. Only reason being, is they have the best blocking left tackle in the nation. Jake long should be able to counter Big Vernon, and that leaves Hart to run between the tackles and run straight at our weakest link, our DT.
That is the only thing that scares me this year.

Hopefully our Linebackers can shed some blocks that game.

Also I am looking forward to Freeman vs. PJ. Hill next week. Thats going to be some hittin next week.

Great job by the defense, I don't think we were gashed by them in the running game they had their yards and moved it a little but our D held them to 10 pts and the point total is all that really matters.

we we're focused on stopping morelli and I think 11/21 - 111 yd - 0 TD - 1 Int is gettin the job done big time!!!:osu:



Hats off to our guys on D for executing the gameplan and getting the Win!!




Now let's strap it on and get back to the job at hand, wisky is next and stuffing the run will be our focus I expect to see alot of man coverage and run blitzing vs the badgers.

PJ hill is a big back like caulcrick and we did an excellent job of stuffing him when msu was trying to run. 4 carries 9 yards. and ringer only went for 49 yards on 18 carries. Our rush defense was fantastic vs msu and I would expect to see more of that vs wisky!!!:oh:

So I was off by a point... :biggrin:

You know the defense has to be fuming that the kickoff return TD goes against their stats. I count 50 points they themselves have given up in nine games...the other 30 (four TDs and a safety) aren't their responsibility.

  • Take away the safety to Akron, kickoff TDs to Northwestern and Penn State, and the two TDs to the MSU defense, and our defense has given up 50 points (5 TDs, 5 FGs) in 9 games, or 5.55 ppg.
  • Outscored our opposition 181-26 in the first half
  • Defense finally surrender a score in the first quarter for the year last night...still only 7 points in 9 games
  • Defense has not surrendered a single TD at home this year in five games
