Breakdown of Red-Zone Violations:

YSU:____________1 - FG
Akron:__________0
Washington:_____3 - INT, Blocked FG, TD
Northwestern:___0
Minnesota:______3 - TD, INT, Downs
Purdue:_________1 - TD
Kent:___________1 - FG
MSU:____________0

Notice that there have been 2 Red-Zone violations in the last 3 games, both in garbage time (4th quarter), one of which was a drive started on our 31.

Breakdown by Quarter:

1st Quarter: 0
2nd Quarter: 4 - TD, FG, Int, Int
3rd Quarter: 1 - Blocked FG
4th Quarter: 4 - TD, TD, FG, Downs

Note:
  • 1 TD and 1 FG in 4 chances in the 2nd quarter
    • 50% scores and 25% td is incredible
  • 2 TD and 1 FG in 4 chances in the 4th quarter
    • less intensity in garbage time, or the bench isn't as good as the starters
    • The one time an opponent failed to score in a 4th quarter incursion was when Minnesota recovered a fumble on our 7 yard line. The defense allowed 3 yards in 4 plays and took over on downs.
  • ZERO Red-Zone violations in the first quarter all season long
    • Farthest 1st Quarter incursion was our 25-yard-line when Minnesota ended their first possession of the game with a missed 42-yard field goal attempt.
    • Washington and Kent State are tied for second place, each having penetrated to our 37-yard-line in the 1st Quarter
    • No other team got inside our 42, and oh by the way, that was Akron's deepest penetration all game long.
  • Washington was the only team to penetrate the Red-Zone in the 3rd quarter
    • The penetration occurred when a late-hit call gave the Huskies the ball at our 19
    • The Buckeyes were so angry at having their Red Zone violated that they sent the Huskies backwards on the next 3 plays and then blocked the field goal attempt. The Huskies did not penetrate the Red Zone again until garbage time.
Other interesting numbers:

  • Akron didn't get past our 42 in 3 trips across the 50.
  • Northwestern didn't get inside our 46 until garbage time when they ran out of downs on our 24 in their second and last trip across the 50.
  • Purdue crossed the 50 on three occassions, with the deepest being our 40 until garbage time when they broke up the shut-out on their last possession.
  • Kent State's deepest incursion before garbage time was the 35. Late in the 4th they penetrated to the 16 after being given the ball on the 31 on a shanked punt.
  • MSU did not get past the 45 until their last possession when they made it to the 25 and kicked a field goal.

That was the spark for the current defensive intensity...they cranked it up a couple notches after that penalty and haven't backed off since.

All the reasons that we're the Best defense in the country. Hands down.

On to our defense... What do you guys think PSU can't do without on offense? I think screens/reverses...

Sure, screens will work until the corners give them zero cushion and washington takes another pick for a TD. Reverse would be great, until Jenkins or freeman jump off their men and blow it up.

Neither of those plays have had much success against us yet...

I think the most amazing stat in that whole thing is that we have played 8 teams, and 3 of them (out of eight) never even got into the red zone. We held 3 teams completely out of the red zone. I don't even know what adjective I can use to describe that. Dominating doesn't do it justice.

That's because dominating can also be a verb.

(sorry, my posts are riddled with miscues like that, but hey, we're all big people here... except the Notre Damers)

That's going to be darn tough to do though. I mean, none of the offenses we face from here on out are completely inept.

I can see us shutting down PSU and Illinois' offenses for the most part. But IMO Wisconsin and Michigan will get their yards out of the I running the ball.

I think Mendenhall is the best back we'll face from here on out, but I dont think he'll get enough carries, and the fact that he runs out of the spread, to "tear us apart."

I was actually thinking that the Illinois offense will score more yards against Ohio State than any of the other remaining four. I see that spread offense running Ohio State's defense up and down the field. But, when backed into the corner, the Ohio State defense will still allow minimal points.
