2007 tOSU Defense

We had majority of the 2's out there when the last drive started. We had some 1's in the secondary though considering we had 5 DB's out there. As they began moving the ball, once they got closer to a score Tressel sent some of the 1's back in there.

I didn't see Laurinaitis, Freeman, etc in there until they got into the redzone.

This D reminds me not just of the great 2002 D, but some of those great late 90's defenses with those great tackling CBs (Ty Howard, Winfield, etc.) that could also play on an island and shut down receivers. I love it.

I'd also love to see an all-time LB corps poll:

Styles, Powell? (if I remember correctly)
Wilhelm, Grant?
Hawk, Carpenter, Schlegel?
Grant, Laurinaitis, Freeman?
Big Kat, Diggs?

To be tenth in the nation in this category (passing yardage), based on the types of games that the Bucks have been playing is amazing. Take last night for example. PU was 31 of 60 for 268 total yards passing. The best passing scheme that the D has had to face averaged a little over 8 yards per completion. Within the framework of the game, (Bucks with a decent lead early, shut down the PU rushing game totally, a lot of third and relatively long passing situations), that's a great job. I will now retire from stats talk, and allow DBB and others to continue their service. But when you are number one in scoring D, and number one in yards per play defense, you will win a few ball games.

I rewatched the 2002 Purdue game on BTN this week and the 2007 version is much faster than that '02 defense. Give me the defensive line of the '02 with the linebackers and secondary of the '07 and that would be one unstoppable defense.

COLUMBUS ? Ohio State right tackle Kirk Barton has practiced enough against the team's disruptive defense to know what a nuisance it can be, and he paid that unit the ultimate compliment.
"They're sick," he said.


Sick as in sinister, dastardly and diabolical.
After a masterful performance in a 23-7 win Saturday night over Purdue, Barton said, "That pretty
much ends all the speculation about who has the best defense in the country. Our defense is the best in the country, bar none."

 [FONT=Georgia, Times New Roman, Times, serif]COLUMBUS ? After Ohio State?s 23-7 win over Purdue on Saturday, the Boilermakers coach Joe Tiller said he asked OSU coach Jim Tressel if this year?s defense was his best and Tressel responded that it might be.
Some of Ohio State?s players were more decisive when they fielded the same kind of question.
Offensive tackle Kirk Barton called OSU?s defense ?the best in the country, bar none.? But then he added a qualifier. ?We have to win a championship before they can be compared to 2002.?
When linebacker Marcus Freeman was asked where this year?s defense ranked among the ones he has played on during his career, he said, ?I think it?s the best.?
That defense will be Kent State?s problem this Saturday when No. 3 Ohio State (6-0, 3-0 Big Ten) plays the Golden Flashes (3-3) in a noon game at Ohio Stadium.

If there were any concerns after a 23-7 win over Purdue on Saturday -- Interceptions? Injuries? -- Ohio State players certainly didn't act worried. As coach Jim Tressel addressed the media, loud shouts of "oh yeah" and whoops of glee emanating from the nearby locker room nearly drowned out his measured tones.

I have a feeling that our sack totals are gonna start to go up. Think about this...we beat NW badly and MSU and Michigan struggled and/or lost to them. How much further ahead of the rest of our conference are we? I'm starting to believe its a considerable margin. Defensely the only team in the same hemisphere is PSU.

Dont mention that year........brings out angst in me. Shoulda won the whole damn thing that year. If we had tress at the time, I dont think it woulda been a contest.

I think this D is maybe the fastest I have ever seen. The ONLY thing that it may lack is the great D-line we have had in the past. Of course the more they play, the better they are going to get.
