2006 Pre-Season TOP 10??

I am in the camp that the following year has absolutely nothing to do with the previous year.

There are so many different things that go in to one game, like the emotion of the team and where the game was at, and I could go and on.

That is why I hate the way they base so much of the ranings on what your record was the previous year and who the returning starters are. They don't take into account that we had AJ Hawk and while he is irreplaceable there are times when the guy that starts is so good that he keeps the guys behind him off the field, even know he would start most places, and there is no way to predict who might step up and what frosh are going ot make an impact.

I mean the only reason WVU is ranked high is b/c they have a nice QB/RB duo, they beat UGA in a game where UGA didnt play like they were capabe of and the fact they play in the Big East.

Now if they were in the big ten, they would of went to maybe the alamo bowl or even less than that and we might be hearing about them competeing with the PSU/Iowas of the big ten for the 4th-6th spots.

How else would you like people to do preseason polls? You take the results of the past year, consider how the team's departing starters and new replacements will affect them, and then, secondarily, you look at the schedule.

I agree with you: if WVU played in the Big Ten, they may have lost a few more games last year. But they don't. So whatever you think of them, there's no reason to think they can't achieve the same or better results this year with the same sort of schedule and a more experienced team. Does that mean they'll go undefeated for sure? Of course not. But I've made my educated guess, and it's just as legitimate as your largely unfounded belief that WVU would've been in the Alamo Bowl last year if they were playing in the Big Ten.

Again...that's the magic of preseason polls....i know this was done early in this thread. Just restating the point, that preseason polls are full of crap. Always are.

Well they put way to much stock into bowl games IMO, and easy looking schedules.

Kueller said:
ad hominem is a latin phrase (meaning "against the person") that's now being taught in "internet arguing 101". The currently fashionable internet use is to pull it out when someone stops debating the issue at hand and starts attacking the person they're arguing with instead.
Was that supposed to be funny?

Am I reading this correctly that you are saying that an injury to a freshman (Chris Wells)who has never set foot on a college football field could cost us enough to stop being #1? Maybe I just am thinking of the wrong CW! If so, sorry. I love Chris Wells, and I cant wait to see what an impact he can have, but I am worried about this season if it is to hinge on the health of an unproven true frosh.
After going back and looking at the texas game I can't help but agree, we're going to need chris wells to show up big time in short yardage and red zone situations.

JOSH HUSTON 36 YD FG
Drive info: 4 plays, -1 yards.
Drive start: 18yd line.

JOSH HUSTON 45 YD FG
Drive info: 5 plays, 8 yards.
Drive start: 36yd line.

JOSH HUSTON 25 YD FG
Drive info: 9 plays, 22 yards.
Drive start: 30yd line.

JOSH HUSTON 44 YD FG
Drive info: 6 plays, 11 yards.

Drive start: 38yd line.
We really need to turn those possessions in opponent's territory into TDs, not FGs and there's no better way to do that than a bruising running game.

I think it's somewhat immaterial if we're ranked anywhere in the Top 5 at pre-season; if we lose to Texas and win everthing else we have a good shot to be no lower than #2 at the end of the season.

I don't see any Super-Teams like USC in pre-seasons 2004/2005, this upcoming year; the exception being us.

I'll address your second statement first: We are not a "Super-Team" with only two returning starters on defense.

As for your first statement: The difference between being ranked #1 and #5 in pre-season is not "immaterial"...that difference of four positions could easily keep us from getting to #1 or #2 at the end of the season should we lose at Texas. Now, does being ranked #5, #10, or even #13 (as we were in 2002) automatically prevent us from making the NC game? Of course it doesn't. But you always, always hope to start as high as you can to best improve your chances at finishing as high as you can.

Anyone who truly feels it's actually better to start out ranked lower needs to check themselves in for rehab...

I'm in the camp that doesn't care where we are ranked in the preseason, though I don't see any team I'd put ahead of us. If we go undefeated all year, I am quite positive we will return to the Fiesta Bowl regardless of where we started. (and if we lose along the way this discussion is somewhat moot--the only undisputed champs are unbeatens--and I'll just hope for the Rose Bowl)
