2006 Pre-Season TOP 10??

CFN released their pre-season top 10 today (technically called Rose Bowl contenders)...

1. Texas
2. Florida
3. USC
4. LSU
5. OSU
6. Auburn
7. Oklahoma
8. FSU
9. Tenn
10. WVa

5. Ohio State 2005 Record: 10-2
Why Ohio State could be the Pre-preseason No. 1: While he’s not Vince Young, Troy Smith is a special, yeah, magical sort of player who is clutch when the pressure is on and the type of star who can carry the Buckeyes to a huge season. Antonio Pittman will finally start to get a little recognition as one of the Big Ten’s best running backs, Ted Ginn Jr. is one of the nation’s scariest players, and the line, in time, should be fine. Michigan and Penn State have to come to Columbus, but ...
Why Ohio State isn’t the Pre-preseason No. 1: … road trips to Texas and Iowa are rough. The top nine tacklers from last year’s D are gone. You don’t get better by losing a linebacking corps of A.J. Hawk, Anthony Schlegel and Bobby Carpenter, and the early departure of Ashton Youboty and Donte Whitner from the secondary, along with FS Nate Salley and CB Tyler Everett, is significant enough to get opposing passing attacks salivating.
What
Ohio State needs to do to get to the Fiesta Bowl: Beat Texas. In the second game of the year, a win over the defending national champions on their turf will be enough to get Ohio State in the top two spot and keep it there unless there's a loss. The schedule isn’t all that bad, Iowa is certainly beatable this year in Iowa City, and the defense should come around by the end of the year. The offense will carry the D for a while.
Realistic, feet-on-the-ground, goal to shoot for: The Big Ten title. This isn’t as good a team as last year’s killer, primarily because Mike D’Andrea and John Kerr can’t make up for the losses at linebacker. It’s asking too much to go unbeaten, but winning the Big Ten championship and getting to another BCS game shouldn’t be viewed as a disappointment of any kind.
The number one thing to work on is: Forcing turnovers. Considering all the NFL talent on the Ohio State defense last year, and considering the D finished number one in the nation in run defense, it’s amazing that it only took it away 12 times. That’s as many as Buffalo, and only Rice (11) and Illinois (8) forced fewer.
Biggest offensive loss: WR Santonio Holmes
Biggest defensive loss: LB A.J. Hawk

USC has TWO QBs who were rated #1 in their class. They have Jeff Byers who, as an OL, was rated the #1 player in the country (they have recruited seven OL who were rated 4 or 5 stars). Counting JUCOs, they have recruited FORTY ONE players in the past four years who were rated in the top 10 at their position (compare that to 19 for OSU).

Their recruiting is just sick.

In my opinion, there's no substitute for experience. It's not like they're simply losing their one best player on either side of the ball. Their entire offense is dessimated w/the exception of Jarrett.

I think ranking UT at #1 is a little optimistic, considering VY was the heart and soul of that team and they'll now be starting a QB who's never taken a college snap (not to mention other notable losses on the defensive side of the ball). Then again, considering how many people we lost on defense, I think #5 is too high for us. I'd put UT somewhere around #5 and us closer to #10.

Why Florida State could be the Pre-preseason No. 1: Fine, so every year is supposed to be the season Florida State gets back to the elite superpower status, but year after year of solid recruiting, and the lumps taken last year fighting through freshmen and injuries, should pay off in a huge season. Think of it this way; if the Noles can win the ACC title last year with all of their problems, imagine what they can do now that QB Drew Weatherford knows what he’s doing, receivers Chris Davis, Greg Carr, Fred Rouse and DeCody Fagg are back, RB Lorenzo Booker decided to return when he could’ve been a second round NFL draft pick, and the offensive line, a major problem all of last year because of injuries, is now experienced and relatively deep.

I guess CFBNews didn't get the memo about Rouse being kicked off the team a few days ago. They're usually better than that.

And it looks to me that they ranked the teams based on how strong they believe them to be, but then stated what the expectations should be based on their schedules. That's why West Virginia is #10 and Florida is #2. That is how preseason polls should be done, not based on who is most likely to go undefeated because of the schedules.

Fforida got no breaks on the schedule this year. From the SEC West they get LSU, Auburn, and Alabama, but no Arkansas, Ole Miss or Miss St. Plus they have Tennessee, Georgia, S. Carolina and Florida State.

If a 1-loss Florida team misses out on the NC game to an undefeated Louisville or W. Virginia squad, there will be major bitching from the SEC again.

They obviously haven't been following our defenses since Tressel's been here. Even in 2004 when we reloaded our defense, we had one bad game on the road at Iowa which was due as much to our inept offense keeping our defense on the field than it was to our inexperience at defense.

We don't rebuild defenses, we reload them. Although it may take a couple games for our reloaded defensive to be firing maximum caliber ammunition, any opposing OC that is "salivating" at the prospect of facing our defense had better be prepared to settle for a light snack at best...

Texas at 1 or USC at 3 isn't a big problem for me. Saying they'll be about as good as they were last year? Can't buy it. Many of those teams on there should be in red. Don't teams ever get worse after losing a lot of first round picks?

Interesting that everyone attacks USC on this board because they've lost a bunch of starters on 'O,' yet most of us seem to think that our defense will magically reload. I guess that's the tendency; dedicated fans of a certain team have been familiar with all the young backups since their recruitment, so they remember their hype and assume they'll be able to fill right in. A lot of times a 4 or 5 star recruit who hasn't seen the field yet is a very exciting player for us fans--think JamO or, hell, even D'Andrea--because they seem to have unlimited potential. But, like buckeyboy said, there is no substitute for experience. However talented our backups are at LB and in the secondary, there's going to be a tough learning curve. The O may be good enough to carry them; then again, maybe not. We all thought the offense would explode at the beginning of this year, but it took a while to hit its stride.

Sure, our recruiting's always great and we typically reload, especially on defense. But USC's recuiting, scary as it is to acknowledge, is even better. If we can reload on defense well enough to replace 9 starters and go undefeated against Texas and the best the Big Ten has to offer, I see no reason that USC can't do the same in the (cough) Pac 10.

I was hard on USC, but I was hard on us for the same reason if you read my earlier post.
