2006 Pre-Season TOP 10??

Poorly done.
You asked what it meant, I explained, maybe you'll like wikipedia more. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ad_hominem

Back on topic: I'm all for being ranked #1, even if you go undefeated there's no guarantee you'll get into the NC game (see: auburn '04). As for whether I think we're deserving of a #1 ranking, I'm not convinced. At this point in the pre-preseason I'd prefer to just say we're one of the top 5 teams in the country along with the likes of Florida, Texas, WVU, and notre dame. USC and LSU might be there too, I just don't know enough about their QB situations atm.

Look at it this way:
People are enamored with the programs and "incredible coaching" at ND, USC and FL. While unlikely, it is possible some of those teams could finish undefeated.

Starting out at #5 could leave us on the outside looking in if any of those two finished undefeated.

Uh, not if two teams ranked ahead of us also finish undefeated...that's my exact point.

My primary assumption is that that won't happen (3 unbeatens), but I also don't consider preseason-rank as compelling for final BCS rankings as you are. If we run the table, including a win at Texas and 8-0 in Big10, I contend that we will be in the BCS title game regardless of anything else--even if there are 2 other unbeatens, one will likely be WV, and neither the computers nor the majority of voters will put us behind them.

I would be willing to bet that Auburn had those same feelings, why leave it to chance and of all things, the BCS

Honestly...if we win all our games next year...and don't go to the Champsionship game...SO WHAT??? We'd go to the Rose Bowl. That'd be fine by me. Sure i'd rather play for a NC...but all it would do is make things like they used to be. If we go 13-0...then i'll be happy. The BCS couldn't change that.

i have a hard time believing that many of your cohorts would agree with you...i will say that this is an admirable stance

And just how you know there won't be three (or more) undefeateds at the end of the season? You don't. Just ask Auburn.

As for us automatically finishing ahead of two other undefeateds who start out ahead of us in the polls, it won't happen...very, very rarely does one undefeated (near the top of the polls, anyways) jump another. Texas started last season consensus #2 and USC consensus #1...did Texas jump USC in either major poll when USC almost lost at ND? No. If we start out #5 or so in the polls and run the table, we'll still finish behind the #1 and #2 (or #3) teams who also run the table, and we'll be left out.

You're assuming it will be two teams ahead of us who also end up running the table, and I'm saying that's a pretty big assumption in a year as wide-open as 2006 appears to be. All I'm saying is I highly doubt we see three major unbeatens this year, and if we do I have no doubt we will be one of the two who goes to the Fiesta Bowl. If I'm wrong I will personally eat a hat of your choosing.:tongue2:

You're forgetting that a team could easily finish differently in the BCS standings than it does in the polls. While we might not leapfrog another undefeated team in the human polls, I can guarantee that we'd be ranked higher in the computer polls than WVU if both squads went undefeated. Likely by a comfortable margin. And if we beat Texas in week 2, we immediately vault into the top 2, no problem.

Are you really as slow as you're obviously intending to act, or are you just trying to argumentative? I'm not saying there will be more than two undefeateds. I'm saying that our running the table does not automatically get us in the Fiesta Bowl as you explicitly say it will. I even showed an example of a team that finished their regular season undefeated and still didn't get into the title game that year (Auburn) because two other teams that started out ranked ahead of them also finished undefeated. The only real way to avoid having two other undefeateds finish ranked ahead of you when you're also undefeated is for you to start out ranked ahead of them. I can't explain it any simpler than that.

Wow, Carnack, you know everything. :roll1: News flash...the human polls still make up a huge portion of the BCS standings, and that a difference between the BCS standings and the human polls, near the top, are actually rare. Also, how can you "guarantee" we'll by higher in the computer polls than WVU? You have no idea how the computers will rack-and-stack teams. Lastly, if we're ranked #5 going into Texas, and we beat them in a close game, and the four teams above us also win, you really think we'll jump everyone but the #1 team? Put the bong down...

Except that, with the way it used to be, we could still be voted #1 in one of the polls. Now we could go undefeated and have no share of the NC. If we went 13-0, I'd be happy NC or no; it'd be a lot of fun, in a masochistic sort of way, to moan indignantly about the inherently flawed BCS, and to taunt fans of the team that "won it all" without having to face us.
