2006 Heisman Discussion (merged all)

All the ND fans I was with kept arguing the "who's more valuable to his team" point of view.
Without Quinn, ND still could've (should've) gone 10-2 against their schedule. Without Troy, OSU probably would've gone 10-2 or 9-3.

Quinn is a very good player, but I don't believe he reads pre-snap coverages as well as Troy, and he throws a terrible deep ball. His "Henne heave" gives his receivers no chance for YAC. I'll acknowledge though that his receivers gave him no help last night -- way too many drops to stand a chance going toe-to-toe with USC.

My Heisman ballot (if I had one) would probably go

1) Troy Smith
2) Darren McFadden
3) Dwayne Jarrett
4) Brady Quinn
5) ... ? I'd probably throw the #5 sympathy vote to Ian Johnson.

At this point, it would be a big surprise it Troy doesn't set the record for the highest percentage of first-place Heisman votes.

My ranking of players, as of today (Steve Slaton and Pat White dropped this week):

1. Troy Smith (4th in passing efficiency)
2. Colt Brennan (1st in efficiency and passing TDs with 51, 1 game left)
3. Mike Hart (6th in rushing yards)
4. Darren McFadden (8th in rushing yards - 1 game left)
5. Brady Quinn (16th in passing efficiency)
6. Ian Johnson (1st in scoring - 24 TDs, 3rd in rushing)
7. Steve Slaton (2nd in rushing yards - 1 game left)

My guess for the Heisman voting, as of today:

1. Troy Smith
2. Brady Quinn
3. Mike Hart
4. Darren McFadden
5. Colt Brennan
6. Steve Slaton
7. Ian Johnson

I'm also guessing that Quinn, Hart, and McFadden are the other guys that get invited to New York. Although Quinn may not be one of the four most deserving players this year, he deserved his fourth place finish last year, and didn't get the trip; so when he goes this year it won't bother me.

Those stats Colt Brennan put up this season are SICK! But the problem with that is they didn't play anyone this season, besides Purdue... I think he'll get top 4 in voting though, somehow I think Mike Hart will be left out of the top 3..

How can you have Hart ahead of McFadden? Team record?

No he didn't. Reggie Bush deserved it. Maybe after the Rose Bowl he deserved it but at the time of the award ceremony the right person won.
Reggie Bush made some eye popping plays, but he didn't set any records. hell, he might not have been the best RB on his own team... OTOH, Vince Young became the first, and only player in NCAA history to pass for 3,000 yards and rush for 1,000 yards in the same season... considering 100 college football programs, and 100 years for each program, VY's accomplishment is in the 1 in 10,000 category...

Vince Young should have won the Heisman.

That happened after the Heisman ceremony. Reggie Bush had the better regular season.

It's close. But Hart has more rushing yards (although McFadden will almost assuredly pass him because of the SEC CCG), Hart's team has had a better season, and he didn't miss his team's season opener because he busted his toe in a 4 a.m. fight in a parking lot outside a bar. Leadership is a factor.

And while McFadden averages 6.1 per carry, his teammate Felix Jones has averaged 7.6 on a little over half as many carries.

Oh, I never knew about his fight. And while yes, scUM has had a better season, Arkansas doesn't have the same talent and they have an awful passing game so they rely almost exclusively on McFadden and Jones while scUM has Chad Henne.
