2006 BCS, polls, Bowl Predictions and computer ratings

Screw Jan. 8. The National Championship Game is NEXT WEEKEND. Look at how close #1 & #2 are. Can anyone honestly tell me that after Dec. 2, no matter who is #1 and #2, that they will be that close again this season?

NO WAY.

Let me go ask everyone who has previously said that the influence of the human polls in the BCS should be reduced (or even removed) in favor of the computer polls.

Either - Computers are not doing a really good job of assessing real strength of schedule. For instance, they may look at common opponents as directly equivalent when in fact they have changed and improved over the season. Thus last week vs Illinois winning 17-10 is given less merit than Rutgers winning 33-0 in NJ before Illinois really got settled.
Or - Texas' loss this week probably shifted our overall computer rating - in polls that lean a little more on SOS.
Or - Both of the above, as it still does not tell me how Rutgers rated a higher ranking after running through their Big East schedule and the following OOC powerhouses -- Howard, North Carolina, and Ohio.

I'm not surprised we're behind Rutgers in computer rankings. We've only beaten 1 good team all year - same as them. We haven't played scUM yet and Wisconsin and between those 2 teams and us we are a combined 17 games over .500 in the Big 10 Conference. Which means we've played basically 7 stiffs -I think there are 4 or 5 teams with 5 conference losses. The Big 10 outside of those top 3 is as horrible as the Big East. OSU, scUM, and Wisconsin would all likely blow out Rutgers/Louisville/WV respectively. But if you combined the rest of the teams in each conference, you couldn't tell them apart.

Has anybody mentioned the possibility of a split NC yet?

Say the unthinkable happens, and tOSU drops only to #2 in the AP Poll but is #3 behind USC in the BCS. Then USC beats TSUN by a fluke in OT (bad replay official call, missed XP, etc.), and tOSU blows out somebody in the Rose Bowl.

The AP Poll, which has never given the Trojans any love (:tongue2: ), then moves tOSU to #1 and USC to #2.

Not bloody likely, but technically a possibility.

I would enjoy the irony in that.

I think the only way that truly works out is if Ohio State loses this Saturday. Therefore, I don't want to think about it :tongue2:

Sunday 7: K-State's Fightin' Princes pull shocker
Nov. 12, 2006
By Dennis Dodd

Seven things we learned on Sunday ...
There is a purple heaven: Remember when Kansas State was a basketball school? Saturday, it was an everything school.
During what was possibly the best day ever in Manhattan, Kan. (I know, I know, it doesn't take much), the Bob Huggins era began with a 70-60 over William & Mary.
img9797256.jpg
Ron Prince's Wildcats improve to 7-4 with the upset. (US PRESSWIRE) Oh yeah, there was a football game, too. Rookie coach Ron Prince pulled off the second-biggest victory in school history with a rookie quarterback, a 45-42 upset over Texas.
The perfect storm formed over Bill Snyder Family Stadium. Texas' young stud Colt (McCoy) was knocked out early, the Longhorns defense buckled and the Fighting Princes played absolutely fearlessly.
Three players threw passes for the Wildcats. In a three-minute, third-quarter span, K-State thrashed Texas 21-0 to go ahead 42-21. That rookie QB, Josh Freeman, missed a series with cramps and came back to pull off the gutsiest play of the game.
With 54 seconds left following a penalty, Prince elected to pass on third down when failure would have probably handed the ball back to Texas with time left on the clock.
"We were coaching our brains out down there at the very end," Prince said.
The play worked, barely (Freeman to former walk-on Jordy Nelson, who lunged for the first down). That basically ushered in a new era in K-State football.
One in which Wildcats basketball -- and football -- are back on the national scene.
There are only 3 trillion nanoseconds until Ohio State-Michigan: Things are going to happen this week surrounding a certain college football game that are going to make your brain explode:
1. What about Troy Smith's thumb?
2. What about Mario Manningham's knee?
3. What about Jim Laurinaitis' sleeper hold?
4. What about Jim Tressel's sunglasses (was he channeling Tony La Russa on Saturday)?
5. What about a rematch?
6. What about a match? Look, there's a couch!

Just be advised that by 3:30 p.m. ET on Saturday, an LSD trip will seem like a mild caffeine buzz after what we've gone through. Our synapses will have been fried by endless podcasts/talk shows/highlights/columns.
That's another way of saying I'll be there Monday for Ohio State's media day.
The participants did their part, winning by a combined 75 points.
Jarvis Moss was up, Florida was down: That's another way of getting into the "Who's No. 3?" question. With four of the top eight in the BCS taking the gas pipe, our logical, sensible system has been ripped apart.
Dodd's Power Poll
1. Ohio State 2. Michigan 3. Rutgers 4. Florida 5. USC 6. West Virginia 7. Notre Dame 8. Boise State 9. Wake Forest 10. Arkansas 11. Louisville 12. Wisconsin 13. Texas 14. LSU 15. Oklahoma 16. Georgia Tech 17. Auburn 18. Cal 19. Nebraska 20. Maryland 21. Boston College 22. BYU 23. Virginia Tech 24. Tennessee 25. Kansas State

There are four undefeated teams and seven one-loss teams left in the discussion. Florida is the Associated Press No. 3 this week only because Moss, a defensive lineman, got a fingernail on a last-second South Carolina field goal attempt.
Moss' inspiring story is worth retelling any time. But if we have to watch Florida's offense one more moment, we're going to hurl.
Moss recovered from a crippling staph infection, which he apparently got in high school, to star for the Gators. In other words, the anti-Marcus Thomas.
Meanwhile, Auburn was a fraud, Cal stopped playing against Arizona and Texas tanked. It's funny how this BCS thing works itself out.
Well, sometimes.
Up next? Florida doesn't seem long for this world. The season seems to be boiling down to the Ohio State-Michigan winner vs. the USC-Notre Dame winner.
With Arkansas lurking on the outside.
But check with us later, it's only Nov. 12.
There's a new pride of Texas: Texas lost. Texas Tech, Texas A&M and Baylor, too. Holding up the state's football dignity Saturday was Houston, which clinched a spot in the Conference USA title game with a win over SMU.
There's a new low in Florida: Florida barely hung on. Miami played bravely at Maryland, but it was clear the 'Canes were distracted, at least early on.
Two long touchdown passes were the difference in the Terps' 14-13 victory.
But what about Florida State, Version 0.0 -- which is the number of points the 'Noles scored against Wake Forest? The 30-0 loss marked Bobby Bowden's first shutout loss in Tallahassee.
"We were just inept," he told reporters after the game. "I never seen anything like it."
At one point it was all about dumping the offensive coordinator son. Now, it's about possibly watching the FSU franchise, as we know it, end. Painfully. In public.
Quinn is still mighty: You're going to have to start considering him again for the Heisman, by sheer force of nature.
Since the Michigan loss, Brady Quinn has thrown 24 touchdown passes in seven games, including four each in the past three games.
The latest four-pack came against Air Force in a 39-17 victory that kept the Irish alive in the BCS race. Consider the competition, but in his past three games (against Navy, North Carolina and Air Force) Quinn has 12 touchdown passes and 848 passing yards and has completed 70 percent of his throws.
No matter what you think of his chances, Quinn will get his ultimate close-up on Nov. 25 in Hollywood against USC.
The curse of Gordon Riese lives! Unless you were watching at 1 a.m. ET, you missed one of the more incredible situations of '06.
Let's just say it involved Oregon, a tipped pass and Pac-10 officials. Again.
On fourth-and-goal from USC's 7-yard line, Oregon's Brady Leaf threw an apparent touchdown pass in the back of the end zone to Jonathan Stewart.
But a review determined that Stewart had stepped out of bounds before catching the ball inbounds. Then Oregon coach Mike Bellotti challenged the review. We didn't even know that was possible. Neither did a top NCAA officiating official.
Upon further, further review, it was determined the ball had been tipped, making Stewart's catch legal.
"After further review, we have a reversal of the previously announced ruling," Pac-10 referee Jack Wood said after a 15-minute delay in the game.
The score ended up being meaningless in a 35-10 USC victory. Well, not meaningless to Oklahoma, which will relive a September nightmare when it finds out.
"That's the first time I've ever heard of it," said Dave Parry, Big Ten supervisor of officials, who helped the conference develop instant replay. "You're fortunate the score was lopsided. If it was 28-27 there'd be a lot of talk."
Questions: A tipped pass, involving Oregon and a Pac-10 replay official? This can't be happening again. Did Stoops know he could have challenged the review of a) the botched onsides kick call or b) the botched pass interference call on Sept. 16?
When contacted Sunday afternoon, Parry himself wasn't sure if a reversal could be challenged. Parry is also the NCAA coordinator of officials for bowl games.

A couple of days ago, how many folks in LA thought that USC would be #3 in the BCS today? What an amazing weekend.

How many folks in LA know that USC is #3 in the BCS today?

Yeah, a lot of people seem to follow the Trojans (when they're good), but LA is anything but a football town. Most people out there probably can't even tell you if the Trojans are having a good year or not. And they don't much care either.

I lived in SoCal for 5 years, and every time I mentioned college football people looked at me like I had 5 heads.

You're right on DaddyBig$$,

Those useless fucks out there don't give a shit about football, and basically never have. How in the hell can the 2nd biggest market in the United States NOT have an NFL team, and yet nobody bitches about it.

Nobody bitches about it because they see through what the NFL has been doing the last few years in regards to an LA franchise: the NFL has been trying to play communities against each other. "Oh, maybe we'll go to the Coliseum. Oh, maybe we'll build a new stadium at Anaheim. Oh, maybe Pasadena." All the while, they've been demanding more money from the voters. They even put a ballot measure trying to force Pasadena officials to come back to the negotiating table.

People want a franchise in Los Angeles, but they don't want to pay the NFL millions of dollars to do what the NFL wants to do anyway: move into the 2nd largest TV market.

Let?s save the time, the effort, and the energy
By Pete Fiutak

Bring the national championship trophy to Columbus this weekend and just give it to the winner of the Michigan ? Ohio State game. Enough is enough this year. Has Florida looked even remotely like a national title caliber team? USC lost to an Oregon State team that just got thumped by UCLA. Does Arkansas really belong in the national title considering it got obliterated 50-14 at home by the Trojans? Sure, that was a lifetime ago, but the loss has to still count for something. Notre Dame needed everything in its bag to beat Michigan State and UCLA and, in case you forgot, got its doors blown off by Michigan. Rutgers? I know, cute story, but come on. Texas, Cal, Auburn ? thanks for playing. And no, there shouldn?t be a rematch no matter what happens next weekend. What happens in Columbus, stays in Columbus.

Not only have Ohio State and Michigan had the two best teams all year, there isn?t anyone else deserving to be in the picture. In the storied history of college football?s greatest rivalry, and it is college football?s greatest rivalry, this will be the biggest game ever played between the two. That makes this, arguably, the biggest regular season game in the history of the sport. So let this weekend be it. Crown the winner the national champion, and let?s get the talk about the 2007 season going. USC, Florida or Arkansas as the preseason number one ? discuss.
