2005 Pre-Season Chatter

I guess my point is this... Vince Young did not complete a bunch of great passes thru the air. He made a bunch of over the middle passes or short yardage ones and then ran for the rest of the scores. VY did not beat UM with his arm.

Smith did. His bomb td to gonzalez, go route to holmes down the sideline, pump fake slant TD to holmes, his jump pass to Ginn, his multiple scrambling throws to Ginn for first downs...

I did not see the NW game so I cannot comment...

It seems that the other QBs did indeed beat him thru the air, I'm just trying to establish that Jackson and the other DBs played pretty good coverage during that game and Smith picked it apart multiple times. And their DL was in the backfield a lot during the first three quarters, but he scrambled and made things happen with both his arm and feet after receiving pressure.

There has to be more running backs on the roster in the spring than Haw and Pittman. Last year, there was additionally:

33 Colby Staubs RB 6-0 200 11/5/1983 SO* Akron, OH (Manchester HS)
And
44 Matthew Johnson RB 5-11 190 7/14/1983 FR* Upper Arlington, OH (Upper Arlington HS)

Are these guys back and ready to fill in for Spring Ball?

2 more days till the season starts so I was just going to get some talk going about the buckeyes this season.

1) Lets say that Smith beats out Zwick this off season, but Zwick has a good first game? then what happens?

2)Who would you guys like to see break through this year?

3)Is there any impaticular game that scares you this year?
1) Probably Zwick starts Texas game but Smith takes over on 2nd or 3rd drive and plays the rest of the game. Then whoever plays better in the Texas game and in practice gets the job for the rest of the season.

2) Like everyone else, I'd like to see a breakthrough at RB. But in addition to that: Rory Nichol at TE. Also we need David Patterson and/or Vernon Gholston, Redgie Arden, or Doug Worthington to play well at DE (we need a good pass-rusher to take the pressure and double-teams off of Kudla).

3) scUM. If we get past TX and Iowa in back-to-back weeks then I think we go undefeated going into the Big Game.

BuckFromScum....If someone wants to argue how one facet of a Qb i.e running has success on top 10 caliber teams, why argue with them? They are just bolstering your point who should be QB. :^)

Your posts aren't being ignored. Its painfully obvious Troy Smith showed the ability to scramble and throw the ball. Its an uncanny ability...that is unique to a mobile qb. Alot of times an athletic Qb will be 1 dimensional and rely on his feet and not his arm to win games but TROY is an enigma. I can't really just put him in the athletic/mobile category. The guy throws better balls than Zwick-prototypical dropback passer.

We can then start talking about improvement of the TS passing game. There is always room for improvement. Mechanics are good, touch is good, looking for 3rd or 4th option can be improved, but that might improve with a better OL.

flashback to terrible times:

I want people to remember where we've been and hopefully we'll never go back.

We have a great coach. I am sure that he will make the right decision between these two quarterbacks. And Zwick has been nothing but class in his approach to losing the starting job.

I personally favor Smith on past performance, but I keep telling myself to remember that we really haven't seen a healthy Zwick behind a functioning line.

see, right there is problem #1. forgive me but id like the explaination of "tresselball" to come from oh... i don't know... jim tressel? second problem. i see nothing explaining the ins and outs of tresselball. in fact, i see very little in this story that has anything to do with football strategy. there isn't even a single formation or play drawn up. there are a few scattered quotes from various people and a whole lot of opinion from a 3rd party...

I will ask all of you Zwick apologists out there one question. If Zwick was not as highly touted coming out of high school would anyone really still be talking about him? To me Zwick is on the same level as Bellasorry and that is saying a lot. Some good games but most of the time he was ineffective and threw a lot of INT's.
see, this quote right here and the one after are the exact reasons why we are having these discussions in the first place. i know mili has said it numerous times as have i. WE ARE NOT ZWICK FAN BOYS!! i have 0 problems with smith starting. i think he has a shitload of talent and will do well. the problem i have is that many here are grading these 2 qb's so wildly different it is beyond anything resembling logic. if smith throws a pick it wasn't smith's fault. the line didn't block, or the receiver dropped the pass, or whatever arbitrary excuse required for it to not be smith's fault. if zwick throws a pick people start demanding explainations as to why his mother didn't have an abortion. if zwick has anything resembling a good game, well all the sudden football becomes a team sport for you smith people. it wasn't zwick, it was the rest of the team carrying him. however, if smith has a good game... he did it all on his own! noone else even showed up and a shrine should be built in his honor asap!!

I still can not believe after all of this time and all of these threads about Smith and Zwick there are still folks holding out hope that Justin will somehow regain his form, if he ever had it, and become the savior.
savior??????????????? wtf thinks jz or ts is a savior? if anyone does their understanding of football is greatly lacking. no one player on a TEAM can make a TEAM. ts and jz account for ONE MAN on an 11 man offensive roster. of which, that offensive roster only accounts of a maximum of 1/3 of the TEAM!

team: 1 : a number of persons associated together in work or activity

savior: 1 : one that saves from danger or destruction
2 : one who brings salvation

do i have an opinion as to who i think should start? absolutely! but my opinion revolves more around the situation at hand with troy's suspension. not because i think one guy is gods gift to all things buckeye. jz is not pond scum and ts is not the finger of god. both these guys have a lot of talent. unfortunately (imo) both of these guys have a LOOOOOOONG way to go before im convinced either is "the man".

#1) The bold print statement may be the funniest thing I have read here in a long time.

#2) I agree 100% with most of your post. The point I was trying to make is that Zwick is done, there is no reason to continue to discuss him a sa viable option. I do not care what statistics ANYONE can give me, or what excuses for Zwick I hear, offense line, no Ginn, blah, blah, blah....Smith is so far ahead of him as a football player that I wanted to give my 2 cents and no longer discuss it.
