2005 Pre-Season Chatter

If I remember right, they delayed his enrollment then gray shirted him follwed by a red shirt. I think he has been working in the system for 2 years.

You are correct, my friend. From the official Ohio State athletic website:

" ... graduated from St. Henry in the spring of 2003 and enrolled at Ohio State on a part-time basis the following fall ... was able to take part in fall drills until classes started ... also took part in the bowl practices in Arizona before enrolling full-time at the beginning of Winter Quarter 2004 ... has clearly benefited from the experience of those practice sessions and has a good grasp of the Ohio State offense ... An interesting factoid is that supposedly Hoobler and Smith will be seeing some PT this year at MLB per Carpenter. Many of us thought Freeman would be the extra guy (besides D'Andrea) to see added PT, but this statement doesn't rule that out either.

By the way, I noticed that you've decided not to stand by your statement that you wanted to "no longer discuss it." :roll1:
I guess I can not help myself, as I sit here kn front of my Troy Smith shrine. I just love these discussions because all the Zwick folks say is, "look at the alamo bowl game!" b ut at the same time say that any QB as long as they could run would have killed Michigan. I guess we should have started TGII against scUM because we would have scored 80 points.

This arguement is so old but I still love it I guess. I just do not understand why folks think Zwick can still be the answer. The mechannics, the accuracy, the lack of mobility, and most importantly the lack of leadership. Smith was chosen first for the Spring Game last year.

The arguement that I hear made so much is Zwick started last year. So what, he sucked as a started, end of story.

By the way Mili, thanks for the wretchedbuck. That was clever.

Smith doesn't have the greatest mechanics either, and his overall accuracy is barely better than Zwick's. Nobody is saying that Zwick is as mobile as Smith, but he's not bad, either (the reason he's not a great a scrambler is that he waits in the pocket longer than Smith, which cuts down his escape lanes). As for lack of leadership and Smith being picked first in last year's Spring Game, Zwick's performance in the bowl game has greatly elevated him in the eyes of his teammates, and the Spring Game of last year is exactly that..spring of last year year. Now is now.

Glad you liked the "WretchedBuck"...

I thought that Freeman was an OLB...

Freeman is an OLB, and he clearly can still get PT this year. I was merely commenting on how it was interesting that an OLB would mention those two MLBs as the guys who will get PT. However it might just be that we all know freeman and expect him to play more this year, so he mentioned the other guys.

i beleive carpenter was referring to hoobler and smith regarding playing mlb during the spring since schlegel and MDA are both out for spring drills.

Oh thanks for the clarification, I was a little perplexed by them being highlighted. Good experience for the future at MLB.

Hoobler looks fierce from what we've seen of him. Freeman has been praised a lot, and I can't wait to see what the 05 class does on special teams (Lenix especially).

This could've gone in many of the current threads, but I guess it's pre-season talk. If mods want, they could split this into a "Who starts at CB opposite AY?" thread (which, the search tells me does not exist yet) At any rate......

We've done a lot of discussing who will take this job and it seems as though the consensus was that Whitner or Jamario would do it (no matter how much Mili insists that Ginn will be there ). In Steve Helwagen's chat today, he says that "the players say Everett wants it" and seems to think that Ty's the front-runner to replace Fox. I know Steve's certainly not always right, but he does have some access to the players and coaches, so he may be on to something. When the depth-chart was released, it had Donte at the CB spot though, so I'm not sure anything's been decided yet. So what do you guys think of Ty Everett at CB? Personally, I'd like to see Donte at CB and Everett at SS, but they may be more interchangeable than I thought, perhaps?

SteveHelwagen (Mar 31, 2005 1:47:31 PM)
The players say Tyler Everett wants the spot. He doesn't want to have to split time with Whitner and come in as the nickel anymore. I like Everett as a player. I thought Whitner was the better of the 2 because of his supreme tackling abilities. So this gives Everett a chance, although he will be limited this spring due to injury. He will be studying ...

you're right bucknut11... I was thrown off by helwagens comments also. I'd like to see Whitner at CB just because he's a tad bit faster, and CB was also suppose to be his natural position. I like Everett at Saftey because he's big and can hit pretty good, but Whitner is a for sure tackler and we need someone like that to replace Fox.

Imagine

With the first kick-off of the Bucks season so far off, I find myself trying to imagine just what changes we will see on the field. Most of the time the changes are no change at all. Yet prior to past seasons we have hoped for pleasant surprises and seen them bear fruit. Ginn, Clarett, Hawk,W. Smith, Gamble, and well you get the gist of it. Also we have seen the turn around of a defensethat was mediocre into the best in the nation against the rush. These positive changes every fandreams of in the slow times. What pleasant possibilities do you see coming no matter how smallor seemingly unrealistic?

My possibility or fantasy would be the offense opening up with receivers we have. Controlled high percentage passes to multiple receivers through multiple sets. Spreading the field with thepass opening up the run. As we all know we love it when our Bucks can run with impunity. For a while now we haven’t seen it.

And what of the players that could surprise changing the play of the defense or offense this season? What if a Worthington was just too good to sit as a freshman? Or if out of the blue Mr. Frost was suddenly averaging 4 catches a game for 65 yds and a TD to boot.

Every year brings new surprises! last year was the emergence of Ted Ginn, and Troy Smith. This year it could be anybody? For sure if we need multiple players to step up with a veteran team like this that might not be a good sign! anyone else excited for some football?
