2005 Pre-Season Chatter

the coaching staff would be stupid to run and run with this team. tressels excuse for bad offense has always been we play to our personell. well if he goes by that philosophy than he will pass to set up the run this year, and if he is still conservative and the offense is as bad as it has been during his era, than Osu football has a big problem going into the future.

this year the offense is loaded, they have speed to burn i would love to see that talent used, and if this coaching staff ain't capable of using this talent than lets bring someone who will.

I see where you got your moniker, because obviously you've done a lot of smack in the past. :roll1:

The staff will use the talent appropriately. You don't fire the HC that brought us a national title and three straight bowls wins, including two BCS bowls, just because he doesn't suit your penchant for wide-open offense.

forget the wide open offense, i don't give a damn if we run all game long as long as we are productive and moving the ball on offense than thats fine by me. but there is no clarett, no eddie george in the backfield its two young guys who have a lot to prove and until they prove something we have to pass to set up the run.

and im tired of seeing a team of the ohio state caliber be such a horrible offensive team, what were those past rankings 104 114, ranked offense, are you telling me that there is at least 100 teams with more talent on offense than tosu??

this coaching staff has alot to prove on the offensive side of the ball, there were excuses in the past not his guys, plays to his personell whatever, this year everything is set with weapons everywhere, if this man can't get this offense to rank at least in the top 40 than you damn right we got a problem and need to hire somebody capable of running an offense, dantonio ain't here anymore to save our ass.

and im not saying fire tressel, but hire an offensive cordinator.

Tressel's team in 2001 was clearly not that outstanding. 2002 was solid, but still not great (MoC was the offense, plus a little krenzel creativity thrown in). 2003 without him we floundered. 2004 we had even less as Bam Childress was our #2 wr and Lydell ross our #1 rb, all behind a porous OL. This year we have our best RBs since #13, a solid OL, a dangerous WR corps, and a QB in smith that is experienced, confident, and much more dangerous running & passing than CK.

How quickly people forget what 2002 was like before MoC got hurt and even a few games without him. Here is how the season started out. Last year USC's high flying offense still had games where they only put up 23 points.

45-21 TxTech
51-17 Kent St
25-7 WSU (#7)
23-19 UC
45-17 IU
27-16 NW
50-7 SJSU

Do I expect these kinds of numbers this year? Probably not, but I think we will see our offensive numbers improve dramatically. Also, don't expect everything at first, as tressel's famous for saving things for big games. What is going to be masterful will be to see how he pulls out his best stuff for Texas while still hiding things for Iowa, then does the same at Iowa saving up for UM.

And a QB in Zwick also with experience and confidence (witness the Alamo Bowl). Whether or not you choose to continue to refuse Zwick's existence, either will be a good QB for the offense.

As for expecting numbers similar to early 2002, there's no reason why we can't put up 40+ on Miami, San Diego State, Indiana, Illinois, and Northwestern, and put up 30+ on the rest of the schedule.

I think Zwick could be solid, and I think we could put up 40+ on the welterweights and 30+ on the rest of the schedule, however I don't want to get prematurely hyped until I see it.

I saw the Alamo Bowl. Zwick withotu pressure on him does not worry me... it's the Zwick under duress that I don't trust. Fortunately I'm not the coach and they can see whether he shows confidence with a fierce pass rush in his faith during the spring practices that mattered (The spring game was a formality where the playbooks were not used on either side; with horrendous weather as a kicker to render it even less telling about where we are at).

I don't hate the kid. I just think he has serious confidence issues, regardless of whose fault that is. I love him as a buckeye and would love nothing more than to be proven wrong.

Zwick was flushed several times in the bowl game (that's how he pulled his hamstring) but he never panicked. He's gained a lot, if not all, of his confidence back. I still personally would give the nod to Smith based on best past performance, but one game for either QB does not warrant an overall opinion...both had solid games, both had sucky games. Provided both stay healthy, we're set at QB, and that's not including what we may end up having in Boeckman.

I was impressed with his performance in the Alamo Bowl. However I feel it is a little different when you are playing an opponent not being smoked by your defense. I don't hold the spring game throws against him as much as the body language (I'm talking before the tools booed). Let's hope that was the exception to the rule for Justin's spring performance. Either way, if he can't cut it then Boeckman looks solid as well.

I'd like nothing more than to see Zwick succeed as well. My confidence in him increased after his Alamo Bowl performance, but was shaken again after seeing him in the spring game. I know he didn't have all his offensive weapons (Ginn, Gonzalez, Holmes), but he looked so shaky back there that it reminded me of the Iowa and NC State games.

There is no smith swick controversy there never was, smith is clearly better and will start for us for 2 years barring injury. the coaches think so the majority of the fans think so and most importantly the team think so.

The real qb controversy will be for the backup role if smith goes down to an injury who will take his place? swick or boeckman?

There's really just one main thing that I'm looking for to be different from recent years, and if the Bucks have it, they'll be in good shape: an offensive line that controls the line of scrimmage. I don't worry about the Spring Game, you can't judge the O-line on that. If the line can establish control, the offense will put up all the points the team needs. If they can't, well, there are still some playmakers out there, but it'll be a struggle.

The main reason we were so bad on offense last year was because we had lost so many players to the draft, had two totally untested QBs, mediocre RBs, only one proven WR, and a very inconsistent OL. You can only coach so much...most comes with game experience. You saw the big improvement at the end of last season, and we have essentially the same team back, plus a couple new RBs to compliment Pittman, along with the emergence of Ginn and Gonzales. We'll be fine offensively.

Then why did Zwick start the first six games last year? Zwick will start the opener because of the suspension of Smith, but he'll seriously challenge Smith for the job from game #2 onward...
