2005 Pre-Season Chatter

That's fair. And I've been called many derogatory names in my day, but that's not one of the more common ones. Some use it more seriously, I didn't catch that nuance.

I agree that he was off a little with his post. But it is true that the offense will have to step up. Tho we need to wait until Texas to evaluate the offense, since there's no need to waste some of our new plays on Miami.

Oh and daddy, you're a dunderhead. :sob:

I screwed the number up. Since January I have been working overtime out the ass(Company was sold). And probably will be out on my ass. Anyways....

I think the OL improvement is due to the young kids developing and everyone catching on to the zone blocking. Seems like OL has alot better feel when to release and go to the second tier.

I liked both smackboys and daddyphatsacs posts.... They both make very good points.

What I like about smackboys is he's correct when saying theres no way theirs an excuse for an offense so poor. He also said he would never fire tressel, and he'd jus want an O-coordinator. Last year many of us felt the same way, and if we do infact are the same on offense then I do believe we need another O-coordinator because this years team should be able to hang 40 on ANYBODY. No body can match our speed and I'm very serious when I say no body.

What I liked about DPS was that he's very correct about just getting that WIN. I also don't care too much to see our team being sported on ESPN. For one teams would wanna beat us that much better, and two we're on ESPN enough.

So can't we just get a combonation and say this- Lets get the "W" and beat teams soundly like 24-3, and 30-7........

I certainly don't think JT has assembled an offense that can complete with many of the teams under Cooper in the mid/late 90s. Let's be realistic, if you could put together an All-90's Buckeye Team, you'd have a simply mind-boggling team. When it comes to offense, some of the bench warmers would include: Terry Glenn, Robert Smith, and Bobby Hoying. That's just plain sick.

Hovering in the lower 50% of the NCAA Offensive catagory is just not acceptable for an OSU team (let alone 100th out of 114). However, JT won a title, and has 40 wins in 4 years, and beaten Michigan 3 times. In 4 short years, he has more Bowl Game/Michigan Game wins (6) than Cooper got in his 14 years (5 + and a tie). It's awfully tough to complain, isn't it? I'll take the end results over the glitz and glammor any day.

That being said, I'd love to take the '95, '96, or '98 offense and throw in the '02 defense. Not that the '96 or '98 defenses were shaky, but that would be a combination that just couldn't be stopped.

Respectfully disagree. The talent is there. If we get solid play from the OL/QB/RB, I'd say we'll be right up there this year. If these guys play to their talent, this offense could be downright scary.

I agree that this year's team could change all of that. I was implying up through the end of last year. And I'm looking at the year as a whole, not just the final two games.

I would bet that the JT Team stats of 2001-2004 had no where near the offensive numbers that the Coop Teams did from 1995-1998.

2005 Surprises

Maybe the Alamo Bowl showed us something that we and hopefully our opponents aren't considering. You think JT will put Ted Ginn in as quarterback more in certain big game situations? I know this is off-season speculative banter but it's great and sometimes eye-opening to see your opinions. Defenses assume he's going to run and even then they may not stop him. Having said that a reverse to Santonio, a direct snap to one of the backs when Ted is in the shotgun or "heaven forbid" a pass could all be huge! Taking some snaps could significantly raise his future Heisman stock ( I don't think voters would give it to a sophomore if he walked on water). That, and a Will Smith-like breakout season for Mike Kudla are my predicted suprises for this season. What are yours? Please don't include incoming freshmen who we haven't seen play a down.

The sole reason that Ginn was in at QB was because we virtually had only one true quarterback available (and that was Zwick, as Smith was on suspension and the staff wanted to avoid burning Boeckman's red shirt at all cost), and that Zwick got dinged up. Had Zwick not tweaked his hamstring, Ginn wouldn't have taken a single snap. Maybe JT will pull one of those plays out of the hat for the Texas and Michigan games, and only once in either game, but other than that I would bet we don't see Ginn taking any snaps.

I don't know about Kudla, he has to stay healthy first before I will get excited about him. Hopefully he will back off on the conditioning (lifting) to give his body more rest during the season.

Breakout player = S. Welch. He's simply a playmaker who will get better with more and more experience as he learns the defense. By the end of the season he will be a major contributor.

Others to watch
Marcus Freeman It will be hard to keep him off the field.
J. Richardson and Barrow We been hearing about Richardson for sometime now and this will be the year he steps up. Barrow will make an impact as a speed rusher on certain downs.

while i don't think ginn will be under center every game. i don't think it will be that big a shock to see him taking snaps. id be shocked if we didn't see ginn runs against texas from qb regardless of how many qb's we have ready to go. which would setup ginn passes against scum perfectly . i would expect to see at least 5 scripted just for ginn plays (not where he is the first read on a pass route) per game. stuff like double reverses from ginn to holmes/gonzo and fake ginn reverses on run plays... there are just so many things you can do with a guy like ginn. to not do them is criminal.

Let's think big! Howseabout Ginn taking snap from center, rolling right, behind a pulling Sims (at guard, since Boone has taken over at left tackle), and tossing a 50+ strike to a steaking Holmes/Gonzalez. Great play for Texas/Michigan/Iowa/USC! Remember he quarterbacked (passed a bit too) for Glenville.

I'll bet you 500 vCash that Ginn doesn't take a snap this year...not one.

I would probably say less than 5 almost definitely less than 10... and that might include direct snaps to him when/if he's lined up in the backfield (With a QB)...

I think they'll want to show that stuff... but I don't think its going to be an integral part of the offense except as a "terror weapon"... you now... fear but not a real strategic threat...

Having said that.. they'll look for other ways to get him the ball... and I'm not discounting the idea that he might throw it once in a while... but why do it from under cneter when the D can get a second to think about it... I think an End around option is far more likely... or a lateral then pass.
