Sorry for being an asshole last night, fellas. I was belligerently drunk and venting. My bad

Apparently Birm has said last night that there's no cohesion in the defensive coaching, that they all go about their own way in terms of what they tell their respective units. Quite the mess if that's the case. But that’s the reported infighting at the Woody. LJ doesn’t like Knowles’ 4-2 scheme. In a traditional 4-3, the OLB can set the edge. In a 4-2, the DE has to set the edge. You can’t really turn the DE’s loose if setting the edge is their primary responsibility.
Interested to hear what that reason is. Can’t think of much that hasn’t been dissectedWhat's interesting... posts blaming everyone who had some minor part in this loss... but THE ONE main reason we lost has been mostly ignored in this thread and on this site

For all the gnashing of teeth over Knowles, if there's one defensive coach that should be on the hot seat, it's LJ. Neither Sawyer nor JTT bothered to show up last night. In fact, both have historically been completely hot and cold from one week to the next. Overall last night for the team: 0 sacks and only 2 TFL. Maybe LJ really was this DL savant or maybe he just recruited three generational talents in a row in the Bosa Brothers and Young.
And that doesn't even factor in the rumors that he refuses to play nice with the person who's supposed to be his boss.
Amen to thatHi
I ducked (no pun intended) out early as I could see how things were going. IF Oregon was not in the B1G, I wouldn't care so much for a 1 pt loss on the road. But that is a huge hit. OSU has to run the table now, and do it convincingly. There is no margin of error. Day screws this up, I suggest OSU starts looking for a new HC who can win the big games
That presumes that the Buckeye OL doesn't hold. The story I heard all week long from BTN was that Oregon's OL and DL were underestimated. The game seemed to prove that true. Most "experts" also believed that the game would be decided by who had the ball last. With the ball at the Oregon 28, the Bucks were within Fielding's range. Why, with only 30 some seconds left on the clock, don't you run to where the kicker feels strongest, force Oregon to use a time out or stop the clock at 6 and kick it? You either believe in your kicker or you don't. But in 34 seconds and one time out, you weren't getting into that end zone. Not to make any excuses but the lack of holding calls in CFB in general is a problem. There are future NFL all pro DL that can't get to the QB AT ALL in games against walk-on OLs. It's absolutely ridiculous. Several times last night, JTT was a step away from getting to the QB while being totally sideways because he's being mugged. I get that it can't be called every down even if it's happening every play but the officials HAVE to make the OL play honest from time to time.
Remember when everyone crucified Day for running the ball against Georgia in the final moments, and setting up a long field goal that we missed? 45 yards is not close enough on the road in college.Exactly what I thought would happen.
All Fair points. That pass to Smith was supposed to be safe and effective (7 yard single coverage sideline route to your best receiver). I’m not arguing the refs call, but you certainly don’t factor OPI as a risk when calling that play.I mean, we had 40 seconds still. You can run, no huddle, run again, then call a timeout. With two running plays you would certainly hope you could get some extra yards and make the FG under 40 yards.
It truly blows my mind that we did not do this. As soon as I saw Egbuka run out at the 28 and saw how much time was remaining, this was really a no brainer to me. Hell, just run the JT Barrett play with Will Howard a couple times, you're going to get at least a few yards each time.
Add this to the list with 2022 Georgia and 2019 Clemson as games we absolutely never should have lost under any circumstance but did thanks in part to some horrifically bad coaching decisions.
I'm so damn sick of losing games like this that we have no business losing. Those 3 games should have been wins 100 out of 100 times. Two of them cost us National Championship Game appearances, with one of them being a certain victory. The stakes weren't nearly as high for this one but one more slip up and it costs us a Big Ten Championship Game appearance. Two more slip ups and it costs us a Playoff appearance.
I'm still baffled that the official did not announce that the clock would start on his signal after the OPI. I have never seen them run the clock after a penalty without announcing, especially at that point in the game. Bucks lost some very valuable time there that probably decided the final score.I’m actually OK with the loss. We were 1 questionable OPI call away from winning, and very well could have won the game. It was pretty evenly matched in a game where a lot went wrong for us. They played with their hair on fire in their home stadium, but it was clear that overall we had the better players. They just made more plays than us.
I almost prefer the loss than if they had made a walk off field goal. The loss stings more and makes them want it more and it gives them something to rally behind. We will likely see them again on a neutral field and I like our chances. There is a lot on tape for them to look at and improve on, and I think they can in most cases. The line play in general is my biggest worry, but it’s not so bad that we can’t still win out as is. Winning the game would have masked some of the issues, not solved them.
It’s not about winning in October, it’s about winning in December and January, and I think the L here gets them closer to that goal than a W would have.
