Game Thread #2 tOSU at #3 Oregon, Sat. Oct. 12, 7:30 pm ET, NBC

I'm not going to rehash most of the many shortcomings you guys have already pointed out.

I will say, I think for both the players and coaches, I think this is the best possible time for the bye week.

It was just a sloppy game with shitty adjustments and they were from all the usual reasons, poor in game coaching, lack of discipline and the environment in the stadium (and the shit OPI)

But, we can't have dumb penalties (which had not been a problem), lose turnovers, manage the clock like ass and win against good teams on the road (and look, the missed kicks were not as big as that shank turned onside kick, I don't personally think Oregon deserves all that much credit and I think Lanning is a tool.)

Everyone part of the program needs to execute better, all 3 units, all the coaches, everyone. The defense needs to decide if its going to limit big plays or get the football. The offense needs to figure out how its going to account for the defense being able to dictate pressure because they're not scared of the deep ball. But mostly we need to build confidence based on sound execution and leadership.

We're going to have a pretty good idea on Nov 2 if we applied the lessons learned here or not. I realize everyone wants to get back after it but I think a week of camp can help.
I can already hear the press conference now, "We're going to get back to basics, footwork, tackling, etc..."

I've been saying for a while now that all of the changes in CFB have sapped much of my passion for the sport. One of the bonus side effects is that I don't feel the lows anymore. Five years ago, would've woke up stewing about that game. Today...eh. Disappointed, but not feeling much. I suppose maybe the highs won't be as thrilling either, but we will see
For me, its kinda just shifted the lows.

Losing this game sucked, for sure. But thats not really what's bothering me. It's looking at the things that happened yesterday, and what it means moving forward for the outlook of this team, that is bothering me.

More forward looking instead of lamenting a loss. Which in that sense is a good thing I suppose that our season isn't over already. But it's definitely a different feeling.

Was there an explanation for why our bye week was so early? Before we played any legitimate teams?

Had to do with UW joining the B1G. They were supposed to be the big out of conference game this year with a home and home. When they joined they cancelled the home and home to accommodate the B1G schedules going forward.

For all the gnashing of teeth over Knowles, if there's one defensive coach that should be on the hot seat, it's LJ. Neither Sawyer nor JTT bothered to show up last night. In fact, both have historically been completely hot and cold from one week to the next. Overall last night for the team: 0 sacks and only 2 TFL. Maybe LJ really was this DL savant or maybe he just recruited three generational talents in a row in the Bosa Brothers and Young.

And that doesn't even factor in the rumors that he refuses to play nice with the person who's supposed to be his boss.

What’s disappointing about what you have accurately described here is the fact that our OC and DC are some of the most experienced coaches in CFB, as is LJ. And Day’s not inexperienced either.

To listen to these coaches say we have to do better, coach better, etc. after a loss is just such a WTF comment. I really wonder if they don’t know how to adjust in game, with the experience they have, what are they really going to do to change anything.

But that’s the reported infighting at the Woody. LJ doesn’t like Knowles’ 4-2 scheme. In a traditional 4-3, the OLB can set the edge. In a 4-2, the DE has to set the edge. You can’t really turn the DE’s loose if setting the edge is their primary responsibility.

I feel like if you don't have generational talent on the d-line, you have to scheme more to open up the pass rush. You can coach individuals up but at the end of the day opposing teams are going to figure out how to protect their QB with the O-line and RBs/TEs especially if you aren't going to confuse them with who you are sending.

Missed assignments help to create a pass rush. If you refuse to make the O-line communicate and question who is coming then they can settle in and just keep doing the same assignment play after play.

Beating your guy is only part of the equation with pass rush. Its alot easier to beat your guy when they get concern about another guy or if the guy next to them is going to make the right decision to help or not.

I know, that’s why I’m going to file that under crazy ass shit. It was an opportunity that we missed out on that, had it just gone for a FG, would have been a difference maker.

Also why I consider It to be a team loss. Far too many examples of “just one thing” being different and we’d have a different outcome. That’s notwithstanding the instances that Oregon had that were similar… but it certainly felt like we had more than our fair share of those things.
There were a lot of little things but in the end they were right there with an opportunity tin win on the road against the #3 team in the country. They simply SCed it

Have heard this before and that’s really on Day for handcuffing Knowles if true.
