Orlando Boone High punter Johnny Townsend, after weighing numerous options, has decided to stay close to home and has signed with the Florida Gators.
Townsend, one of the top punters in the nationa who was a U.S. Army All-American, was committed since August to go to Ohio State, but given other opportunities, he decided he wanted to play football closer to family, said his father Clay Townsend on Thursday afternoon.
Townsend averaged 43.6 yards per punt during his senior season and his near flawless delivery gives him impressive accuracy with his kicks. He was also a Class 8A All-State selection, played in the Central Florida All-Star Game and was named to the Sentinel's All-Central Florida team.

In any event, good luck to Johnny.

Looks like the Townsend's were gracious enough not to badmouth whatever happened here...it would be naieve to look at our late and unexpected success with Wilson, Bell, and Clark, and then say it had nothing to do with Jacobs and Townsend not getting into the class. Unfortunately, I think we lost a great talent here and I hope we have someone lined up. On the plus side, guys like Wilson and Clark feasibly make punting seem alot less likely in the near future Good luck Mr. Townsend.
The thing that makes me wonder is that Florida has 4 punters on the roster. One for a fact is on scholarship and is an upcoming junior that has played last two years.gost8;2302832; said:Everybody wondering what happened.... Wanting to find out what the story is. Maybe, just maybe he just changed his mind and wanted to go to Florida. He said he has been a Gator fan all his life. His parents went there. His brother goes there. Close to home. Not everything has to be full of drama. From what has been said so far, no one at tOSU asked him to grey shirt or pulled his ride. Could be he just had a change of heart and wanted to stay home.
