Vaughters with offers from around the country

By Eric Guimaraes
LB James Vaughters (6-2 230) of Tucker, GA has over 30 offers already including one each from USC and Clemson. Other offers include Florida, Florida State, Georgia, Georgia Tech, Alabama, Auburn, North Carolina, NC State, Texas, Southern California, Stanford, and UCLA. His father, Jonathan, says his son has worked at narrowing his list. "He has it down to nine," he said. "He likes Georgia, Georgia Tech, Texas, North Carolina, Southern Cal, Stanford, Ohio State, Florida, and Alabama." Vaughters has already visited each, except for Texas, which he plans to visit soon. As for USC and Clemson, his dad says, "It's possible they could get back into it but I'm not sure what it would take. We started the process of researching the schools about a year ago, so I think we know a lot about each. He never got the chance to visit either, so that may have played a part in it." Vaughters will likely take in spring practices at both Georgia and Georgia Tech due to their proximity to his home. As a junior, he had over 100 tackles, 75 solo adding four sacks and eight tackles for loss.

I'm by no means trying to imply we'll end up getting James Vaughters or Wayne Lyons, but its the OOS guys like this who come from strong, supportive families that tend to appreciate Tressell the most and at least give us strong considerations. With Vaughters Ohio ties, lets hope this is one we get in the fold.

Coveted linebacker James Vaughers to visit Texas this weekend

Laken Litman/Texas Special Contributor

Tucker (Georgia) linebacker James Vaughers will head to Austin this weekend for an unofficial visit in hopes of receiving a scholarship offer to join the 2011 recruitment class.

The 6-foot-2, 233-pound blue-chip defender currently holds over 30 scholarship offers, some of which include Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Georgia Tech, North Carolina, Ohio State, Southern Cal and Stanford. He's already taken spring visits to Stanford, Georgia Tech, Alabama and Florida, but Vaughters told Rivals.com he's excited to see a Longhorn practice and the Texas campus.

"I'm really looking forward to my visit. Texas has clearly established themselves as a great program that is going in the right direction," Vaughers said. "With almost winning the national championship and a good group of players returning, as well as the Texas pipeline, I think Texas will be good for a long time. In addition, I think Texas' academic reputation is great nationally and has a lot of respect."

Vaughters places academics and football on the same level. He currently has a 4.0 GPA at Tucker High School and hopes to get a chance to talk with some current Longhorns players about being student-athletes at a school like Texas.

"I hope to better understand the academic support that is available for the student-athletes," he said. "I am sure it is pretty good, but it's always good to see for yourself."

Vaughters will be accompanied by his father on the visit, and the two will get a chance to watch a spring practice on Saturday. Vaughters said he will be keeping a close eye on the linebackers.

"That will give me a great opportunity to see how the coaches interact with the players, especially for my projected position," he said.

Top LB James Vaughters takes hard look at nine finalists
March 29, 2010, by Chip Towers

Tucker linebacker James Vaughters wasn't able to make a scheduled trip to Texas this past weekend. The Longhorns are among nine finalists for Vaughters, the top-rated linebacker in Georgia. (AJC file photo)

Having narrowed his choices from more than 30 scholarship offers down to nine schools that he?ll take under serious consideration has made James Vaughters? recruiting experience a little more manageable. But it?s still proving to be a difficult process.

?Things are busy right now, but not crazy busy yet,? said Vaughters, a rising senior at Tucker and the No. 1 linebacker in Georgia. ?I was supposed to go to Texas [this past] weekend, but it turns out we had a death in the family and instead of going to Austin, we are going to Ohio for the funeral. We?ll reschedule our trip to Texas because I am interested Texas as a school and I would like to see the campus, coaches and facilities.?

Vaughters (6-2, 232) was recently named an Under Armour All-American and will participate in its nationally televised all-star game next January in St. Petersburg, Fla.

Meanwhile, he and his father are taking a methodical, one-by-one look at the nine schools from which he?ll make his decision ? Georgia, Georgia Tech, Ohio State, Alabama, Florida, North Carolina, Southern Cal, Stanford and, of course, Texas.

?I really like what I have seen from all of these schools and it will be tough to narrow it down, but I hope to do that by early summer,? Vaughters said. ?I really want to focus on my senior football season and bring another football championship to Tucker.?

Of course, Vaughters is taking Georgia and Georgia Tech under heavy consideration. Both teams are desperately seeking linebacker talent after converting to 3-4 schemes under new defensive coordinators. The Bulldogs are in the middle of spring practice and Tech just started Monday, but Vaughters said it?s unlikely he?ll visit either until this summer. He has been to both campuses many times.

?We?re planning to visit Georgia and Georgia Tech more times to spend time with the new defensive coaches, but probably not while spring practice is going on,? he said. ?There?s just a few too many things going on right now to pin down when that would be.?

From the UGA site...James' head coach talks about what an exceptional kid James is and how his parents did a great job of raising him...says for how good he is on defense he is also a punishing blocker and could make a great flex-TE.

From the Florida site...down to Georgia, Georgia Tech, North Carolina, Florida, Alabama, Ohio State, USC and Stanford.

OSU and Florida fans can cross him of their list...this one is pretty much over despite what you hear. OSU needs to focus on DePriest and/or Crowell.

Really??? Most of the Georgia fans I've conversed with have Ohio State leading for him.
