THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH
Now that Jeff Boals is officially an assistant coach, the Ohio State men's basketball team will try again to recruit Adreian Payne, a 6-foot-10 junior from Dayton Jefferson.
Ohio State has been conspicuously absent from Payne's suitors, but Boals has a close relationship with him. Payne had planned to skip an AAU tournament two weeks ago to visit Akron, but he canceled the visit after Boals left the school.
Payne, a top-30 recruit in the class of 2010, plays on the same AAU team as Ohio State recruits Jared Sullinger and Jordan Sibert. The Buckeyes' big challenge might be getting him to feel at ease on campus. Payne is not a city kid and reportedly is uncomfortable around a lot of people he does not know.
The scenario is similar to that of another Dayton-area player, Romain Sato, who committed to Xavier in 2000 after being overwhelmed by the size of the crowd at a football game in Ohio Stadium. Coach Thad Matta, hired by Xavier in 2001, was the beneficiary then. He works the other side of the street now.
This is not the first time that I have read this which totally baffles me why Ohio State has backed off of his recruiting a little. Even Payne said in one interview that he was not being as heavily recruited by Ohio State as some other schools. Hopefully, Boals will change that if Ohio State really wants himconspicuously absent from Payne's suitors
“I guess I’ve got Xavier, Dayton, Cincinnati, West Virginia, Florida, and Ohio State and some others,” said Payne when asked who is recruiting him. “I haven’t really narrowed anything yet.”
As for his relationship with the Buckeyes, Payne says that Ohio State really hasn’t been recruiting him as aggressively as people might think. He didn’t offer up any reasons why either.
“They really haven’t been calling me or recruiting me as much right now,” Payne told Buckeyesports.com of Ohio State. “It’s been kind of quiet with them compared to what people think it is.”
Anyway, I too hope coach Boals rectifies that situation. We could sure use a long athletic kid in the program with all the wide bigs we are assembling.
