Coach Boals has a good relationship with Payne but the kid seems to want to stay closer to home........it will be interesting if we turn the heat up on Payne..........

Boals had him contemplating Akron U, which is more than twice as far away from home as we are! I do think there is a draw to keep him close to home. I also think he may have a liking for a smaller campus and to be a bigger focus at a smaller basketball program.

Hopefully Boals can turn his thinking around, we aren't that far from his home and we are the ones that will allow him to show off his talents on a big stage. DAY doesn't exactly get a lot of national TV exposure and press.

I don't know if I would go so far as to use the word contemplating. Boals was able to get him up there for some type of visit perhaps there was something else going on in the "neighborhood" when he visited. Junkie is also correct that it is not so much about distance as it is about size. I haven't seen OSUBucks22 get in here lately but a while ago he said to also watch out for WVU which would tend to support Junkie's thinking regarding the size of the campus.

He didn't end up visiting because Boals was hired away by TM before he could make it up there - but it was going to be to check out the University - not because he'd be in the neighborhood by chance! Boals also got Zeke Marshall to commit and some have him in their T50. I've heard some claim he was Day's now WV's, I think that is BS and wishful thinking. In reality he has no idea yet from what I gather!

Two of Sullinger's and Weatherspoon's AAU teammates, Adreian Payne of Dayton Jefferson and Jordan Sibert of Cincinnati Princeton, could be playing in Value City Arena in January in the 2010 Scholastic Play by Play Classic.

Dayton Jefferson coach Art Winston said recently that his team is booked against Harvest Prep in one of the games. Payne, an athletic, 6-foot-10 forward/center, is considering Ohio State among a number of major programs.

Catchin' up on Weatherspoon, APR, etc. (Hoops & Scoops: an OSU basketball blog)

Payne makes a visit
As theorized when assistant coach Jeff Boals was hired a few weeks ago, the Buckeyes have renewed their pursuit of 6-foot-10 Adreian Payne. The Dayton Jefferson junior made an unofficial visit to campus yesterday, Rivals.com reported.

Payne said he also visited Michigan State last weekend and plans to visit Kentucky this weekend. That presumably will take him out of the All-Ohio Red lineup for the All-Ohio Super 16 Showcase at USA Sports Academy, formerly The Hoop, on E. 5th Ave.

So would the thinking be that we're in the lead because of proximity and the fact we have some of his AAU teammates already committed?

Or is he going to surprise people?

I don't ever recall Kentucky or MSU playing that big a role in his recruitment before he announced his final three, but maybe I just suck at paying attention...

I understand he has said he doesn't like big schools, but both Michigan State and UK are pretty big schools themselves. Perhaps he sees the benefits as overriding the small-school preference.

Are the Kentucky and Michigan St. campuses much smaller than OSU? As for Dayton, I know it's home and all but you don't often see guys this highly rated going to mid-major schools. His chances of making it to the league would likely be enhanced by playing in a big-time conference.
