#1 Ohio State 89, #6 North Carolina 98 (Final)

If we have Oden, the dynamics of the game are different, but not necessarily the outcome. UNC played some strong perimeter defense in the second half. They deserve credit for that.

The foul disparity didn't have as much to do with the officiating as the fact that we played outside most of the game, and they were able to get the ball inside. UNC got a couple of favorable calls, but ultimately there was going to be a big difference in fouls and fouls shots because of the style of play of both teams. With Oden, that probably changes.

I dont know, I think conley did fine. Jamar Butler decided not to show up though. But you are right, I hope we play them again.

Hard for a calm, poised guard to show up when the rest of the team showed very little, if any, patience on the offensive end. Jamar needs to step up his leadership and show these young kids that they need to wait for high percentage shots..

Conley was alright, but it certainly wasn't one of his better games. 3 for 9 from the floor, granted he had 8 assists, and Lawson gave him fits all night. Seemed like he was blowing by him effortlessly at times, though that might have been down to fatigue more than anything else.

Hey, our guys played a fantastic game against the premier basketball program in the nation. We went in with only 8 scholarship guys to play against about 11 and that team has excellent talent to go along with their depth. Would Greg Oden made a difference in this game, no doubt. I just take my hats off to both teams. This game was definitely a tournament environment type game and for the rest of the season there will be many a destructive victory for each to enjoy. I wasn't exactly happy with some of the officiating and what not either but hey, its a home game for them and they've already earned their reputation. Tonight we did a great deal to start earning ours. Within the next two weeks more people will be on the Buckeye bandwagon than ever before. Lets stay classy and remind them all who never left the bandwagon!

:oh:

I am really excited about this team. A group of mainly freshman play their first game outside Columbus at one of the toughest places to play in the country, lead for much of the game, and run out of steam at the end.

We needed more defense and offense inside. Help is on the way.

I wouldn't rank Ohio State in the Top 10 at this point of the season. Number 1 team in the country right now? No way and I never thought they were.

Number 1 team at the end of the season? I think that is very, very possible.

The final piece of the puzzle is on the way! This is gonna be fun to watch.

Reply Re: Congrats Ohio State. You have a fine team!!! You guys are right Ohio State has a Great team...I thought OSU shooters kind of got fatigue and winded in the second half which enabled Carolina to go on the runs that they did..

I agree with this guy. I bet Thad does too. Even though they looked awesome you better believe Thad will be running their ass into the ground at practice trying to get them in better shape. I'm not saying that we aren't well condidtioned, but when you have as thin a lineup as we do you have to be that much better conditioned than the other team. This will pay big dividends later in the season.

agree with fatigue concern. you know, i'm not so sure our lineup is all that thin. we played eight guys, with harris and hunter getting the fewest minutes at eighteen apiece. for the tarheels, there was a precipitous drop from the ninth to the tenth player.

for the florida/kansas game, there was a sharp drop in playing time from the seventh to the eigth player. sure, we're talking about two different games with two different rosters and a different tempo (82-80 in overtime). i guess what i'm getting at is that i'm not sure that what fatigue i saw is solely due to depth.

ehh... i can't sell that to myself. the combined score was nearly 190, which is a very up-tempo game. having just one more player should make a considerable difference, especially for ohio state at the 1/2/3. twiggy and hunter seemed to have plenty of energy. it was mostly conley that i saw get tired.

Good to see the great effort from every player all night. I was especially impressed with the 4 youngsters getting after it from the get go in a very difficult enviroment. And I even saw Oden almost smile a time or two early on.

With Conley being fatigued at the end, this has to be one of the few times he has met up with a player as quick or maybe a touch quicker than himself. A learning experience for sure.

Lewis was the man for sure tonight. I seriously think he could have a Michael Redd type career in the NBA.

My concern now is how soon will Oden be able to get into the flow when he returns. Regardless, I can't wait for the Florida game now. I hope that entire game is as good as the first 30 minutes of this one was.

Young Buckeyes fall short in 98-89 shootout at North Carolina

Dunbar grad Cook scores 14, leads OSU with nine rebounds

By the Associated Press

Thursday, November 30, 2006

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. ? A bunch of freshmen grew up in a hurry Wednesday night in a November game that lived up to the hype.
Tyler Hansbrough ? a sophomore veteran in a game that had eight freshmen make major contributions for both teams ? dominated down low in the second half to lead No. 7 North Carolina to a 98-89 victory over No. 3 Ohio State.
It could have been very different if Ohio State 7-footer Greg Oden, a freshman considered the equal of college big men such as Patrick Ewing, Ralph Sampson and Alonzo Mourning, had been able to play instead of sitting on the bench in street clothes with a towel around his neck.
But that's an argument for another day.
"It was a heck of a college basketball game," North Carolina coach Roy Williams said. "Even as a coach, you sit there and marvel at the level that kids are playing at offensively."
The defense was pretty impressive in the second half for North Carolina as it was finally able to slow down Ohio State's incredible shooting from 3-point range.
"We definitely won this game on defense," Hansbrough said. "Coach really adjusted in the halftime, and we came out really aggressive, and tried to step it up, and I think it flowed into our offense."
Hansbrough started and ended North Carolina's game-breaking 17-2 run in the second half.
The 6-foot-9 forward was the key inside for the Tar Heels (5-1) against the Buckeyes (6-1), who were playing outside the Columbus city limits for the first time this season.
Hansbrough finished with 21 points and a career-high 14 rebounds, and freshman Wayne Ellington scored 19 for North Carolina, which trailed by 10 points in the first half and was down 68-63 with 10:50 to play in the game.
"It wasn't anything I did in particular," Hansbrough said of his second-half offense. "I was still playing. Movement, a little more. I moved myself without the ball and got open looks."
Ron Lewis had 30 points for Ohio State, which finished 13-for-26 from 3-point range after hitting 12 of its first 19 shots from beyond the arc.
"I guess it was just our adrenalin. That's what we're known for is hitting 3s," Lewis said. "We came out and played a great game, but they got it done in the end."
Dunbar High grad Daequan Cook scored 14 points and led Ohio State with nine rebounds. Springfield native Ivan Harris added 17 points for OSU, hitting five treys, and Troy's Matt Terwilliger chipped in six rebounds.
North Carolina started three freshmen and played five in the game, while Ohio State had two on the floor at the beginning and had one more among its eight available players.
Oden was reduced to a cheerleading role as he continues to recover from offseason surgery on his right wrist. He is expected back by Jan. 1, but the Buckeyes could have used him against North Carolina.
"I think this was a very good test for our guys," Ohio State coach Thad Matta said. 'I think we learned a lot about our guys through the first six games and I think we can come from here and say 'These are the areas we have to get better at, defensive transition and rebounding.' The encouraging thing for us is that we're waiting on Greg, and where they got us tonight is some areas where he's going to help us a lot."
Williams agreed.
"They have got a big-time team and when Greg Oden gets back and playing for them, they are going to be a heck of a team," he said.
The ACC had already clinched the 11-game challenge series for the eighth time in as many meetings earlier Wednesday night, but the Tar Heels put a nice cap on the event for their conference. The ACC won eight of the games.
Ty Lawson had 13 points for North Carolina, while fellow freshman Brandan Wright added 11.
Lawson said he knew most of the Ohio State freshmen from the high school all-star circuit.
"It was friendship off the court and all business on it," he said.
North Carolina overcame a 48-44 halftime deficit by scoring the first nine points of the second half in a 12-2 run. The sellout crowd of 21,750 at the Smith Center sensed the Tar Heels were in control, but Ohio State had other ideas and they again involved 3-pointers.
Harris hit three straight 3s for Ohio State to give the Buckeyes a 64-58 lead with 12:43 to play. For a team that entered the game shooting 42 percent from behind the arc and averaging 10 3s per game, Ohio State was on a long-range roll, but it was about to end. The Buckeyes made just one more 3 the rest of the way.
A tip-in by Cook gave Ohio State a 68-63 lead with 10:52 left.
That's when Hansbrough started to dominate down low.
His basket started the run and then he followed a reverse layup by Lawson with a three-point play to give the Tar Heels the lead for good at 70-68 with 8:28 to go. Rayshawn Terry hit a 3 to end North Carolina's run of 12 straight points. After a jumper by Harris, Ellington hit a 3 and Hansbrough followed with another basket in the paint to make it 80-70 with 6:33 to play.

OSU's bombs are not enough

Tar Heels' Hansbrough overcomes 3-pointers

By Jim O'Connell

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Tyler Hansbrough started and ended North Carolina's game-breaking 17-2 run in the second half, and the seventh-ranked Tar Heels went on to a 98-89 victory over No. 3 Ohio State on Wednesday night in the ACC-Big Ten Challenge.
In a game featuring two of the country's top freshman classes -- with Greg Oden, the best of the bunch, sitting on the Ohio State bench in street clothes with a towel around his neck -- Hansbrough, a preseason All-American as a sophomore, took over near the basket.
The 6-foot-9 forward was the key inside as the Tar Heels (5-1) were able to overcome an incredible 3-point shooting performance by the Buckeyes (6-1), who were playing outside Columbus for the first time this season.
