Tar Heels rally past Buckeyes

CHAPEL HILL - If North Carolina has a special finish this season, the Tar Heels might look back to Wednesday as the night that sparked them.
Trailing by six in the second half against a team ranked No. 1 by the coaches and No. 3 by The Associated Press, North Carolina turned loose Tyler Hansbrough for 21 points and tightened up its defense for a 98-89 victory in the ACC-Big Ten Challenge.
Freshman Wayne Ellington finished with 19 points.
The crowd at the Smith Center was frustrated as Ohio State (6-1) repeatedly penetrated through a porous North Carolina defense and pitched to open 3-point shooters early.
Despite playing without 7-foot freshman center Greg Oden, who is out until January after having wrist surgery, Ohio State led 35-25 in the first half. The Buckeyes made eight of 13 first-half 3-point attempts.
Sophomore guard Marcus Ginyard came off the bench for eight points and six rebounds in the first half as the seventh-ranked Tar Heels (5-1) closed within 48-44 at halftime.

Reply Re: Congrats Ohio State. You have a fine team!!! You guys are right Ohio State has a Great team...I thought OSU shooters kind of got fatigue and winded in the second half which enabled Carolina to go on the runs that they did..

I agree with this guy. I bet Thad does too. Even though they looked awesome you better believe Thad will be running their ass into the ground at practice trying to get them in better shape. I'm not saying that we aren't well condidtioned, but when you have as thin a lineup as we do you have to be that much better conditioned than the other team. This will pay big dividends later in the season.
UNC essentially had another team they were shuttling in all game (12 players versus our 8). With the frantic pace of the first half fatigue was bound to set in on a few Buckeyes. This game displayed the depth of the 'Heels and Roy Williams should be commended for the recruiting job he's done.

I will go more in depth later....but my first thought after watching this game is that we took some steps forward last night. When #20 hits the floor in the next few weeks, Ohio State will be very difficult to handle for opposing teams.

This team opened some eyes nationally and put the Big Ten on notice.

KARL DEBLAKER | APThe Buckeyes? David Lighty, bottom, loses a battle for the ball to North Carolina?s Danny Green.

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. As seasoned as the Ohio State men's basketball team was last season, and as good as the Buckeyes became, there is no comparison between how that team and this younger, less-tested one thinks of itself.
"The mind-set from last year to this year is very different," junior Jamar Butler said. "We have the mind-set we can beat anybody."
They almost did last night. And not just anybody. And, amazingly, they did it without Greg Oden.
Game from the start but short at the end, the No. 3-ranked Buckeyes pushed No. 7 North Carolina to the limit before falling 98-89 before a raucous, sellout crowd of 21,750 in the Smith Center.
The Buckeyes (6-1) led by as many as 10 points in the first half and by six with 12 minutes to play but could not hold on against the favored and deeper Tar Heels (5-1), ranked No. 7. Carolina used a 17-2 run to build a 10-point lead with 6 1/2 minutes to play and held on from there.
"I told our guys before the game, 'This is going to be one hell of a basketball game,' " Ohio State coach Thad Matta said. "I thought one team would hit 100 points, and I was hoping it was going to be us.
"That to me is college basketball right there, that environment, the plays that were made, the blocked shots, the hustle, the tipped passes. That was exciting."
Ron Lewis led the Buckeyes with 30 points, the most he has scored in two seasons at Ohio State. Ivan Harris added 17 points, including four three-point baskets in the second half, and Daequan Cook had 14 points and nine rebounds. Jamar Butler and Mike Conley Jr. combined for 13 assists.
"We played a hard game. We played together," Lewis said. "The one thing about our team is we're not going to quit."
Tyler Hansbrough led North Carolina with 21 points and 14 rebounds. He had 14 points in the second half, when he made all five of his shots from the field and made the difference in the outcome.
Trailing 68-63 with less than 11 minutes remaining, the Tar Heels uncorked a 17-2 run in a four-minute span to take command, 80-70, with 6:33 left.
Hansbrough, surrounded by defenders for much of the night, bulled through a triple team for a layup that started the run, added a three-point play midway through it that gave Carolina the lead for good, 70-68, and capped it with a driving layup.
"We felt with the game plan we had, we had a shot to win the game," Matta said. "We knew we were going to have to make some shots and we knew we were going to have to do a job guarding their inside guys.
"And, quite honestly, we preached we could not foul. You come on the road and shoot 13 free throws to 34 free throws, against a high-level team like that, it's probably not going to happen for you."
North Carolina made 22 of 34 free throws, Ohio State eight of 13.
Trailing 84-72 with less than five minutes remaining, Ohio State outscored the Tar Heels 11-4. Harris' fourth three of the half cut the deficit to 88-83 with 1:54 left.
But two free throws by Ty Lawson and a three-point play by Wayne Ellington boosted the Tar Heels' lead back to 10 and they played out the final 1:22. Ellington scored 17 of his 19 points in the second half.
North Carolina shot 53.1 percent from the field for the game. Ohio State shot 52.3 percent for the game.
"That was a heck of a basketball game," North Carolina coach Roy Williams said. "As a coach, you sit over there and marvel at the level the kids are playing at offensively."

Pardon me for not reading the entire thread and maybe this has been said and if so I apologize but if Dick Vitale pined over Greg Oden one more time, I may have puked.

I know he's the second coming but chill on the hype machine a bit.

I can't imagine how much it may have aggravated the Tar Heel fans but even as a Buckeye fan, I was tired of hearing it.

Amen. I was trying to enjoy a great game on the court and Dicky V kept droaning on about how great these kids are going to be in March and how spectacular Oden is. There was absolutely no analysis of the actual game being played.

Agreeing with much of what was said above, the loss was due to a combo of running out of steam while UNC really stepped up on the D. There were some ticky tack foul calls but the officiating was not the difference. After watching parts of most of the games of the Big Ten - ACC Shoot Out, I am without doubt that tOSU will dominate the Big 10 this year. It is going to be a lot of fun to watch these guys.

1. I thought Conley played as good a floor game as you are going to see from a kid in his first month of CBB. His passes led to many of those open 3s in the first half.

2. Lawson is not the best guard I have ever seen, but he may be the fastest.

3. I was most impressed with the play of Harris and Twigs. I did not expect them to step up the way they did - particularly against the strength of NC.

4. We might have won even without Oden if we had two more of any of our players on the court. Fatigue and fear of fouls hurt us big time. It looked like the zone was an attempt to give our D a break and that did not work at all.

5. I have been a Lewis doubter for some time. Got to give the kid his props. He stepped up against the very best.

6. Officiating certainly could have been better, but it was no worse than may games I have seen in front of rowdy home crowds. There have been comparable performances in the Schott where we got the edge. It is a shame, but it is what makes home court advantage so significant in CBB. That said, much of the discrepancy was legit. We were struggling to contain Hansbrough and playing tired D late in the game.

7. I think Vitale was right about Oden being back for Cincy. That game is his homecoming and I look for an appearance even if not a meaningful one.

8. All in all I was incredibly impressed. This was our first real test and we have ourselves a basketball team. And when you see kids like Harris and Twigs stepping up you have to give all the credit to Matta.

Random thoughts:

1. This was one of the best college basketball games I can recall seeing. 190 points scored, yet really pretty good D by both squads. Amazing.

2. Buckeyes are really good, but without Greg Oden they are not quite as good as UNC, who I believe is the best team in the US right now. Bucks are a legitimate top-5 team even without Oden, IMO.

3. Best game I have ever seen from Twig, even being held scoreless. Hansbrough had a good game, but Twig stepped up and was effective against him.

4. Mike Conley may ultimately be the most important recruit on this team. He's the best point I have ever seen wearing scarlet & gray. He will need to get used to playing guards who are as quick as he is, though (Lawson).

5. Best game I have ever seen from Ivan Harris.

6. DaeQuan Cook is our best rebounder right now, and he proved it again last night.

7. I love this team! Couldn't be more proud of our Buckeye hoopas. Fatigue clearly set in at the end of the game, when the Tarholes finally stepped up their perimeter D. But these young men left nothing on the court.

Just spent some time over on UNC's scout board this morning. Gained a ton of respect for their fan base and coach Williams. There was some sour grapes over the focus on Oden coming back (but like Thump said above, I was getting tired of hearing Vitale say it as an OSU fan), but overall lots of classy folks. Also props to coach Williams for getting on the UNC fans for the overrated chant.

Frankly, the part of Vitale's schtick that was really driving me nuts was hearing him talk about how fast Lawson was, despite the fact that Conley was running circles around him from half-court.

Lawson can run fast? No shit, Dickie V, and basketballs are round! Rip up your pre game notes, open your eyes, and watch what is going on in front of you right now, because Conley took Lawson behind the woodshed.

Yes, end-to-end on a fast break, Lawson can indeed fly, but I'll take Conley setting up 30 points a game for other people versus Lawson sprinting for his own 4.

Good game by the Bucks last night, especially in the first half.

I'm definitely excited about our potential on the court this year after seeing us in such a hard fought battle with one of the historically elite NCAA bball teams.

As an aside, why no mention of the hottie sitting behind Oden? I'm surprised BMax hasn't weighed in on the issue. :p

Go Bucks!
