'09 TN WR Marlon Brown (Georgia Signee)

Harding star Brown makes PARADE All-American team

As a sophomore, Harding Academy senior receiver Marlon Brown wasn't sure he wanted to continue playing football.

The 6-foot-5, 205-pound standout was content with pursuing a career on the basketball hardwood, where the long-armed, athletic Brown was always a natural.

"When I was a sophomore, before the football season, I told (Harding football) coach (Ryan) Derrick that I was going to quit playing football and just focus on basketball," said Brown, now rated one of the top receiver prospects nationally by most recruiting services.

On Monday, following a senior season in which he racked up 1,785 all-purpose yards and 19 touchdowns, Brown became the first Memphis-area football standout to be named a PARADE All-American since Trezevant's Albert Means earned the honor in 2000.

"I'm in a fantasy world right now," said Brown, one of 58 players and six receivers selected nationwide for the honor. "I never thought in five years I'd be like this."

Brown, a Division 2-A Mr. Football award winner who is considering Florida, Georgia, Ohio State, Ole Miss and Tennessee, was the lone Tennessean selected to the team. He's also the first Memphis private schooler to be named a PARADE All-American.

"It's unbelievable. We may not ever have a kid come through our school like Marlon ever again," Harding athletic director Kevin Starks said. "But I also think kids will look at Harding Academy and say, 'You know what? I can come here and be successful spiritually, socially, academically and athletically.'"

Isn't crazy Houston Nutt normally into the rushing attack? I know Tressel hasn't been turning out 1000 yard receivers, but I couldn't name one player on Arkansas outside of Darren McFadden and Felix Jones. (Casey Dick doesn't count because his name is Dick).

Nutt had QB Mitch Mustaine and a WR from the same high school whose name escapes me. Mustaine flopped, blamed Nutt and left for USC. The receiver went with him, and caught a TD in the Rose Bowl.

If my choices were Felix Jones, Darren McFadden, Peyton Hillis and Casey Dick I'd run the ball all day, too.

...one key note from Marlon was that he believes that the QB situations at Ole Miss with Jevan Snead and Ohio State with Terrelle Pryor are in th ebest shape right now.

TIFWIW, but the fact that he speaks with Terrelle on a regular basis could mean a lot.

It certainly won't hurt if they build a rapport NOW. :)

The fact that he talks with Pryor a lot is good news, though I have also heard he talks to GA QB commit Aaron Murray a lot as well. Even with Ole Miss and Tennessee making late pushes, I think these types of relationships win out in the end so I really think it will come down to GA and OSU.

Not new film, but Marlon shows off his athleticism on the hardwood as well:

He definitely has all the athletic skills you would ever want in a receiver prospect. Zero doubt about that.

Actually if he was to choose OSU, Jordan Hall at the point, Brown at shooting guard, Pryor at small forward, Jake Ballard at power forward, and Cam Heyward at center would be a pretty formidable pick-up team. All these guys, except Hall I believe, received Division I attention in basketball as well as football. Lawrence Wilson also got Division I attention.
