Very good offer...Not sure if there is going to be room for him on the basketball team with us being loaded on the wings...

But in terms of his football skills to go up and get the ball, to move like he is 6'...He could also play defense as he isn't afraid to come up and stick you from his safety position...

Not sure how much of a chance we have here, but he is a top 30 player in the country IMO, and hope that we have a dog in this fight...

Scout lists him as a safety. Where is he projected to end up?

There aren't a lot of 6-5 safeties, usually because it is tough to maintain the needed speed at that size. My guess would be WR...

College coaches from the nation's top powers, recruiting analysts and fans will all be closely following the pursuit of Harding Academy's Marlon Brown, a 6-5 wide receiver.

Harding wide receiver Brown has the skills to become top prospect

Friday, February 8, 2008

The highlight DVD begins with Marlon Brown, all 6-foot-5 and 205 pounds of him, hurdling over a would-be tackler like a deer would a fence.

"Did you notice the cut before that?!" asks Harding Academy football coach Ryan Derrick. "I mean, just a 6-5 kid doing that, to me, is absolutely unbelievable."

With the 2008 National Signing Day now in the books, Brown, whose size and skills have landed him scholarship offers already from Notre Dame, Ohio State, Oklahoma and Stanford to name a few, is almost certain to be Shelby-Metro's top prep football prospect in 2009.

In fact, he may go down as the area's most coveted high school prospect ever, considering Shelby-Metro has never before produced a "five-star" prep prospect according to Rivals.com, which ranks Brown the No. 13 overall junior prospect nationally and one of 14 "five-star" prospects in the Class of 2009.

"I think he's one of the top handful of prospects in the country. He's a guy that we're going to be keeping our eye on for the next 365 days," Rivals.com editor-in-chief Bobby Burton said Thursday.

"He is athletic, catches the ball well and runs well after the catch for a guy with that kind of size. ... He's another of those guys that, you know, is a big, ol' tall-looking basketball-like wide receiver."

Marlon Brown at a glance

Basics: 6-5, 205 pounds

Statistics: As a junior in 2007 -- 41 receptions, 861 yards, six receiving TDs; 58 rushing attempts, 629 rushing yards (10.8 yards per carry), 10 rushing TDs.

Accolades: Selected to Rivals.com's Junior All-American Team; ranked by Rivals.com as the No. 13 overall junior prospect in the nation.

College offers: Auburn, Clemson, Colorado, Indiana, Kentucky, Miami-Fla., Notre Dame, Ohio State, Ole Miss, Oklahoma, Stanford, Tennessee and Texas Tech.

This kid looks great at WR on film. I've been hearing about him a lot! It's amazing to see a kid at 6'5'' move like he does. But it might be pretty difficult to get him out of SEC country, but stranger things have happened and Tress has done it before.

I found some film of him on youtube....don't know if its against the rules to post it so admins take it down if it is.

The kid won me over in the first few minutes of the video, he moves exceptionally well for his size, and his vision seems to be extremely good. He fits the Calvin Johnson/Dwayne Jarret/Braylon Edwards body type to a letter "t". After the catch though he is more like an explosive running back. Great combo to have and I hope to see it in S&G.

Very impressive video.

It was almost 3 1/2 minutes in before he was tackled.....

I was most impressed with his vision and strength once he got the ball in his hands. Here's hoping he ends up in Columbus!!

As it says at the end of the video:

58 carries for 659 yards & 10 TDs
41 catches for 861 yards & 2 TDs
15.1 yards per touch & 18 total TDs........

I love how he uses his hands to break so many tackles. I don't think I've seen a WR use the stiff arm so much and so effectively as Marlon does. He could fit the role of a Percy Harvin in our offense: a playmaking WR that can be used in different formations (even as a RB) to throw off the D. We need to recruit that camera man to BP.

After watching the video though, I question his height listed at 6'5". There were a lot of kids in that video and many of them were awfully close to his height. He didn't really seem to tower over anybody, either. Not that I think he's small, but I think he looked closer to 6'2" than 6'5". Then again, maybe he just plays lower to the ground... who knows.

ND feels they have a pretty good shot at him. We've got a receiver on our roster that he played against and buddied up with in HS, Golden Tate. Golden is a two sport athlete (also plays baseball), so he could describe better than anyone how ND would accommodate his desire to be a dual sport student athlete. Sounds like academics will be a focal point, but to what degree isn't clear.

That said, this kid is definitely going national, so anyone has a shot at him. UT will be a definite player, USC might get in the mix with an offer if they don't fill up too quick (making serious headway with Flourney and Evans out west), the entire SEC and ACC will be knocking on his door... nobody should count their chickens before they hatch with this kid.

This guy is amazing...here is to going after Brown and hard. I personally like Brown better than Julio Jones, as I think he moves better. Top 10 imo and I could see making a case for Brown to be the top player in the country at this stage.
