08 Recruiting (CBF40's look at our prospects)

Pryor - difficult
Scott - yes
Jenkins - probably (maybe WVU)
Goebel - probably (maybe ND)
Rowell - needs work to get an offer
Sweat - yes
Zordich - yes
Hale - difficult
McCarthy - possibly (maybe ND)

I like the Buckeyes' chances with Fuller, even though his father went to Texas A+M.
I'm not counting Long out of the mix yet.
There's always someone (usually a DB like Jenkins, Chekwa, Pentello) who emerges from left field.

Can't say I disagree with any of that...

Jenkins & Koger are more uncertain (possibly 'doubtful' for JJ)
Pryor & Hale right now are more in the 'possible' category

Left field candidates could include Rocko Khoury (likes UM - offered yesterday, but may try to earn more offers at camps) & Justin Thompson (DT soft verbal to Miami)

As much potential as this class has, there is still the liklihood that it will fizzle as well.

jenkins stays at wvu.
mccarthy to nd.
koger to ttun.
thompson stays at miami.
mobley to minny.

you then have to hope for hale and pryor in order to keep what had the makings to be one of the best classes osu has had from becoming simply very good.

Probable (Knock on wood): Goebel, Scott

Hopeful: Pryor, Thompson, Rowell, Hale, Koger

Maybe (handwaving): Wells, Tate (cross fingers)

Unlikely: Jenkins, Floyd, Mobley, McCarthy

I'd like to see some more DEs in the class. We're going to be thin on DEs in the next few years unless we fill some spots. IMO Hale is a LB.

Also, I was going through the list of DEs on scout with interest in OSU, and ran across Grant Valentine, four-star DE from Cal. Lists interest in OSU, North Texas and Mississippi. Couldn't find him on Rivals. No thread over here either.

It would take a miracle for OSU to land more than two of those five kids. Just not gonna happen. So don't set yourself up for failure. However, if we do somehow land two of Koger/McCarthy/Jenkins/Mobley as well as Pryor, then this would be a great class.

Going by what others have posted, Hale's abilities right now may be better suited for DE or DE/LB.

Totally agree with you on getting more DE's. The Florida State sugar bowl game in 98 taught me the importance of fast athletic DE's and difference they can make. We need more of those guys in the pipeline.

With the nine current commitments plus Goebel and Scott, this class already is one of the best ever for Ohio State. And I'm pretty sure that the staff will find quality prospects to fill the remaining slots.

Besides, it's still early in the process, and I don't mind holding a scholarship or two for some prospects who will emerge during their senior seasons (it happens every year).

It is so early it is easy to miss this, but in the benchmark class of 2002 we had 3 five star athletes and 6 who were ranked in the top 10 at their position. We already have 3 and 7 this year.

Granted, rankings are rankings. But with folks like Pryor, Hale and Goebel looking hard at OSU this could be a monster class with or without Jenkins, McCarthy, Koger et al.

Sorry it has taken so long to respond, but I havent been able to be at my computer for a long period of time to type anything up that was worth posting for this thread...

I was finally able to catch up on the recruiting forum with updates, and also as wad alluded to in the tidbits thread I received some first hand information from camp...

So let me first start off with basically stating the obvioius and saying how amazing this class is going to end up when it is all done...With the couple transfers we just recently had, and with a few probably leaving early for the NFL, I see no reason why we don't get 18 or maybe 19/20 if the right players come along in this class...

Right now we are sitting on 9 verbals (Buchanon, Stoney, Adams, Torrence, Williams, Brewster, Shugarts, Posey, Sweat)...

That right there is an amazing start to the class...IMO opinion we have probably the best kicker in the country, 2 of the top 10 receivers in the country, 3 of the top 10 lineman in the country, a top 3 RB in the country, and a top 10 lb...Throw in Williams who is a physical specimen but hard to project where he will play but a top 250 type ath, and we are sitting pretty...

Now to what is to come from now till the end of the recruiting year...

- My spy told me that he watched Posey and DJ Woods go head to head at camp...In his opinion he told me it was a draw...That there leads me to believe that the staff had to be impressed with what they saw, and while Adams, Pead, and Woods have all been up and down in terms of stock, I think that after a performance like that we might see Woods land an offer...

So for recruit #10 I will say DJ Woods...

- Also as Wad posted Terrelle Pryor was receiving the full court press from Tressell, Troy Smith and others...In every interview you read or hear, you also here the Brew crew talking about how he is going to be the QB to round out this class...

So for recruit #11 I will say Terrelle Pryor...

- The Brew crew also seems to be high on their chances with Garrett Goebell, who most also feel will be a buckeye probably soon...

So for recruit #12 I will say GG...

- One recruit that many at one time or other felt our chances were pretty slim with were Kevin Koger...But my spy let me in on the fact that he really seemed to be hitting it off with the Brew Crew, and with the way Michigan has kinda drug him thru the mud with them going after Brandon Moore, I think that there is a good chance that we will win this one...

So for recruit #13 I will go with Kevin Koger...

For recruit #14 I will go with Cordale Scott...(duh)

Another guy the Brew Crew seems to be targeting along with the staff is Shayne Hale. I still believe that he will be part of this class...It is going to take awhile until a decision is reached, but I like our chances...

So for recruit #15 I will go with Shayne Hale...

Then after that we are looking at a pool of players that have expressed interest and at times we have been talked about as leaders...

Guys in this group include Josh Jenkins(not at camp, as mentioned in his thread, rumored to have car trouble), Dan McCarthy(OSU/ND battle), Pead/Adams(Do we go after one of them?), Lamarr Thomas(can the staff pull this off/spy saw him at camp), Jeff Fuller(The staff loves him, but Texas is along way from Ohio), Mobley(I think he goes to Minny, but would love to snag him), Keith Wells(Another one I would love to snag, but will be very difficult), Michael Flyod(spy saw at camp, another that will be hard to sang), Kenny Tate(very tight lipped recruitment, we were early favorites, but seem to have faded a lot), Sam McGuffie(I don't think we offer), and then of course you will have under the radar recruits step up, and maybe steal a spot or two...

So with all that said, here is what I see...

QB - Pryor or no one...IMO we get Pryor
RB - Torrence...I think we are done here...
WR - Stoney, Posey...Staff seems to really want another one, and I think we will pull in another one, of guys like Flyod, Fuller, Tate, Thomas, or someone under the radar at the moment, but I look for one more receiver...
TE - Stoney could play here, but I think Koger is the #1 target here, and I think we land him...If we don't get him we might seem them persue someone like Ryan Wallace or maybe try and make a hard push for Ayles...
OL - Shugarts, Adams, Brewster...Is the staff happy with just 3 if we miss out on Jenkins...He seems to be off and on again on his interest in us, and seems to be getting a lot of pressure to stay home...Or might we offer someone else? I really think it might just be the 3 we have already...
DL - Williams...I believe we will land GG, and I would love land another DE, especially one like Wells, we might also see Hale end up at DE in his carrer if he comes here...In terms of interior dlineman I would still like to see Rowell do enough to earn an offer or be able to bring in Mobley, but I think we really need 2 interior guys, and it seems the staff feels good about guys that are close to offers or ones that have offers considering there hasnt been much movement on that front in terms of targets...
LB - Sweat...I would take Sweat and Hale and call it a day, but the staff might like to bring in one more...Not sure at the moment, but maybe someone like Rippy, Staples, Beachum...
CB - I think that Woods and maybe Pead/Adams, or Thomas would be a nice class...The question is does the staff just want one or two...
S - I still think we have a solid shot at McCarthy, but I still can't get myself to be confident about him...
