08 Recruiting (CBF40's look at our prospects)

17 is optimum - per year. 20 is OK per year. Classes of 30 indicate a problem, not a windfall.

Totally agree. You don't think a class of 29 is going to come back to bite UF later? They better hope a couple of those kids aren't still on scholarship 4/5 years from now.

my prediction

spring: people will create a list of the 20 best prospects and expect that.

summer: someone will get an early offer and accept. people will complain. the list of the 20 best will become the 17 best and 3 really really good players

fall: a few kids will committ followed by some people complaing and others saying player x,y,z will be the best buckeye ever and they compare to some multiple award winning all american. the hs season will carry on some kids will come out of the woodwork and everyone will want him, others stock will drop like enron stock, all will sell. the list will be the 14 best available with two or three others that are reaches (four star type guys)

winter: kids will pick other schools, the sky will fall and people will realize tressel cant recruit and needs to be fired.

feb 6th 2008 singing day, some kids will sign, others will enroll early. people will want tressel fired. others will think his class could walk on water.

feb 7th 2008 the sun will rise from the west as normal...

Gut feelings-we will sign a ton of linemen and be very happy on signing day next year.
If we don't, I hope Rocco Pentello and Nate Oliver each grow 4 inches and 110lbs in one year.

I agree I think that we could see 5 Olineman and probably 2 or 3 guys that are pure DT or a guy that might be a DE/DT type.

I love the way the staff seems to be casting a wide net...

Especially on the oline with 5 offers and a guy like Sanders could see one sometime soon.

Also lb's with Hale, Sweat, and probably Beachum soon.

Two big time WR's in Flyod and Tate...

Now we are just waiting on someone to take the plunge and be the first to verbal and get us started. I really think Mike and Mike are going to recruit us a great class...

You know I was thinking about that the other day. If we end up with a GREAT class next year and land many of the guys that have been talked up the past few months that is just more ammo for the "Tressel can't recruit crowd". They will say the only reason we landed such a great class is that Brewster and Adams did all of the recruiting and Tressel just sat back and didn't do a thing. I can read these idiots like a book and I promise you this is their next move.

Great job on the thread, this is one of the most informative threads in all of Buckeyeland. I wanted to spark some early discussion of the upcoming class and was hoping someone could help me answer the following questions:

1. Will there be a change in strategy wherein the staff puts greater pressure on recruits to make thier intentions known publicly (think Mack Brown with Joe Barksdale)?

2. If a school gets some early commits and one or more of those players attempts to assist in recruiting other players for the class, does it matter the position the guy plays? For example, would an offensive lineman (or two) have a harder time recruiting other players than a quarterback or running back?

3. Is it official that Josh Kerr and Tyler Whaley's scholarships are guaranteed for their whole careers or is it possible that they are single year awards that are only given the next year if there are extra?

4. Am I crazy to think there is a good chance that the 2008 class numbers 18-20 (I start with 13, know that number could go to 14 if Lyons decides a fifth year isn't worth it, 16 when Jenkins and Gholston inevitably leave early and 18-20 if a couple guys transfer (M. Wells, Pretorious, Lane, M. Johnson, Underwood and others have been rumored to be considering it at various points)?

5. With all the attention being put on the O line and D tackle positionsare we overlooking potentially the most critical position in the 08 class, RB? Both Wells' will be gone after 2008, which means we will be left with Saine, Herron and 2008 recruits as our only experienced RBs in 2009. Do Torrence or any of the other backs have the ability to be good starters as true sophomores if Herron and Saine don't develop into full timeres?

6. Was there ever confirmation one way or the other as to whether Bauserman would cost a scholly?

7. Out of the guys who are currently considered top 100, is it possible the Buckeyes could get 10 or so and make this a top 3 rated class?

After about a month of the 08' recruiting season gone by and film out on most of these guys I am going to give my thoughts on where this class might go...

QB - At this point with it looking like Bauserman is coming on board I would say that we take a pass on a QB unless we can get Pryor. Right now we are in great position, but he is a big time guy so we will have to wait it out...

- Pryor or none

RB - At this point I would say that Torrence is basically in the bag, just a matter of him taking his visits and going thru the motions of the recruiting process. I would think that the staff would like to take another and right now we are in pretty good position with Richard Watson, but he is a big time guy from Florida and those are never easy to pull. After that I don't really see many more guys on the board right now or if the staff sees Lamaar Thomas as a RB, or maybe a camp offer type guy.

- Torrence and maybe Watson or a guy not on the radar right now.

WR - Most would say that Scott for sure and probably Posey will be buckeyes sometime in the process. We are in good position for Tate and Flyod and some other big time OOS receivers, but I would be happy with the 1st two and call it a class, unless one of the studs want to come on board.

- Scott and Posey and maybe one of Tate, Flyod or OOS guy.

TE - We dont' need to leave the state. At this point I think we are in the lead for Rudolph but Notre Dame still scares me there. I think Stonie will just be a matter of time. They wouldnt invite him to so many things if they didnt really like him. Also Moore could possibly get an offer sometime if warrented.

- I think we get at least one of Rudolph, Stonie, or Moore and maybe 2 of them.

OL - This is where we are going to have a huge haul. At this point it looks like Mike and Mike will just go thru the motions and take their visits while recruiting for us thru out the whole process and eventually come on board. I then think that we have a pretty decent shot to land Long, Jenkins, or Shugarts. But those are big time OOS guys and might be tough to pull in but you have to liek where we are at.

- Mike and Mike about 99% for sure and I think we will pull in at least 1 of Long, Jenkins, or Shugarts and maybe 2.

DT - We look to have a pretty nice short list at the moment. Mobley and Goebell are two very good OOS guys with offers and I always feel good about the OOS wrestler type DT like Goebell so I like our chances there, but think that Mobley will probably end up at Minny. Also we have a potential NFL 1st rounder at Glenville in Rowell if he puts it all together and keeps in weight and grades in order. I think it is just a matter of time b4 he gets an offer.

- I would say Rowell for sure and hopefully Goebell, if not Goebell I am sure that there will be some other guys come on the radar b4 all is said and done.

DE - At this point there arent many at all on the radar. I say we only need 1 and might look to get 2 if some guys pop up that the staff likes. I think that Nathan williams will eventually get offer, he has gotten a ton of pub, and maybe the staff sees a guys liek Staples at DE if he comes to camp and impresses.

LB - We are in great position for some very good players here. We could possibly take 3, but I think 2 would be fine. At this point I would love to land the combo of Sweat and Hale. But Ohio has some guys like Beachum, Williams, Staples, Craig and there are other OOS guys showing interest like Wilson, Major, and Beal. Either way I am not at all worried at all about LB's due to depth we have there and the guys we seem to be in on.

- Hale and Sweat would be great, but they are from PA and the midwest schools will put up a fight for both of them. Either way there are too many guys to get a great read on who the guys we will get will be.

DB - Not really sure what we will go with here. Would love to land McCarthy and think that Johnny Adams could get an offer here. But McCarthy's bro is at Notre Dame and he could be tough to pull from them. My number one guy would be Patrick Johnson but he is longest of long shots being a highly rated guy from Florida, but Ely kids seem to give us a good look. Either way there really havent been many DB offers so far and really not sure after last years big class how many we will take. Also a guy like a Tate or Scott could be a safety prospect. Some other guys are Pead and maybe Lamaar Thomas.

- Hopefully McCarthy but after him I am really unsure.

K - I would love to pull in a guys like Buchanan or Schott as a grayshirt.

At this point if signing day was today I would think our class woudl be full of the stars that I listed, but there is a long way to go and as we know there is a long way to go.

Mods anyone else...Thoughts??
