College basketball notebook: Maryland upends Michigan State

Friday, November 28, 2008 3:20 AM

Greivis Vasquez and Dave Neal each scored 17 points and Maryland hustled its way to an 80-62 upset of No. 5 Michigan State last night at the Old Spice Classic in Lake Buena Vista, Fla.
After falling behind by three points early in the first half, the Terrapins (4-0) countered with a 23-5 run to take the lead for good. Maryland held Michigan State's Raymar Morgan to four points and made 9 of 19 three-point shots compared with 2 of 9 for the Spartans.
The Terrapins also were much better at the free throw line, going 17 of 21 to Michigan State's 12 of 27.
Travis Walton led the Spartans (2-1) with 16 points.

CAUTION: Slow play ahead
Big Ten games rank at bottom of Division I in average ball possessions
Tuesday, December 2, 2008 3:14 AM
By Bob Baptist

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH
When Ohio State defeated Massachusetts in the National Invitation Tournament championship game in April, the teams combined for 154 possessions and scored 177 points in 40 minutes. "I loved it," OSU coach Thad Matta said of the Buckeyes' 92-85 win. "My neck was sore."
Matta said he would like to play that way every game.
"I've always said I want a team that averages 80 points a game," he said. "In my ideal world, that's how we would play."
Unfortunately, Matta coaches in the Big Ten, widely viewed as the clogged drain of college basketball.

College basketball | Big Ten a big kid on block yet again
Conference looking good in wins over ACC, ranked teams
Tuesday, December 9, 2008 3:13 AM
By Bill Rabinowitz

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH
Like their football brethren, Big Ten men's basketball teams have seen their collective reputation take a hit in recent years. In four of the past seven years, the conference entered the NCAA Tournament with the lowest Rating Percentage Index of the six Bowl Championship Series conferences.
But with a good chunk of the nonconference portion of the schedule completed, the Big Ten looks to be in the process of reversing its slide. According to CollegeRPI.com, the Big Ten ranks behind only the Atlantic Coast Conference so far this season.
Big Ten schools are a combined 68-18 this season, with all the losses against teams that made the postseason last season. Indiana, which is starting almost from scratch after the Kelvin Sampson debacle, is the only team in the conference that doesn't have a winning record.

Big Ten announces its basketball presence with authority

By Shannon Ryan | Tribune reporter 7:54 PM CST, December 8, 2008 It's early in the college basketball season, but not too early to give the Big Ten some credit.

The conference had some quality wins this week, surprising even some conference coaches. The Big Ten is No. 2 in RPI and No. 1 in strength of schedule among the nation's conferences.

Michigan has done its part, beating Duke from the ACC and UCLA from the Pac-10. Ohio State took out No. 21 Miami and No. 7 Notre Dame. Like the Buckeyes, Minnesota is still undefeated.

And despite questions about whether they could win any games in the Big Ten/ACC Challenge, the Big Ten lost for the 10th time but finished with a 5-6 record in the games.
