Purdue shoots 55 percent in second half, forces 22 turnovers in tourney win

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- Eastern Michigan got Purdue's attention, and then it was over.
The Eagles jumped to an 8-0 lead on the Boilermakers (No. 10 ESPN/USA Today, No. 11 AP) on Monday night.

Sufficiently awakened, Purdue responded with a 26-6 run and never was challenged after that as Robbie Hummel scored 18 points in the Boilermakers' 87-58 victory over Eastern Michigan in the first round of the NIT Season Tip-Off.

New Jersey Institute of Technology sets D-I record for straight losses

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. -- The New Jersey Institute of Technology set an NCAA record with its 35th straight loss, falling to Penn State 74-47 on Monday in the Philly Hoop Group Classic.

Men's basketball: Ten Big 10 Questions

Wednesday, November 19, 2008 3:10 AM
By Bob Baptist

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH
1.Who are the best teams?

Michigan State, Purdue and Wisconsin, in that order now but not necessarily at the end. I don't understand the near-consensus opinion favoring Purdue to win the Big Ten championship. Michigan State is loaded with athletes young and old, and unlike last year, they won't have to defer to Drew Neitzel. The Spartans should run again like they did with Mateen Cleaves and smother opponents with their depth. Purdue returns all five starters and seven of its top eight players from the young team that surprised everyone and finished second to Wisconsin.

College basketball notebook: Michigan dumps UCLA

Friday, November 21, 2008 3:12 AM

Associated Press

DeShawn Sims scored 18 points and Manny Harris added 15 to help Michigan upset No. 4 UCLA 55-52 last night in a semifinal of the 2K Sports Classic in New York.
Michigan will face No. 10 Duke tonight for the title.
With Michigan down 48-46 with 4:16 left, Stu Douglass hit a long three-pointer. Darren Collison was stripped on the other end, leading to a layup by Sims for a 51-48 lead.
Josh Shipp of UCLA (2-1) made a free throw with 56 seconds left. Anthony Wright then found Sims on a backdoor cut for a dunk that gave Michigan (3-0) a four-point lead with 23.8 seconds

Men's Big Ten highlights

Illinois 69, Vanderbilt 63 -- Demetri McCamey scored 23 points to lead Illinois (3-0) over Vanderbilt (1-1).
McCamey's layup broke a tie with 6:22 remaining and started a 7-0 run that put the Illini in front to stay.
Vanderbilt tied the score at 58 on a free throw by A.J. Ogilvy with 6:56 remaining but then was held scoreless until Andre Walker made a layup and a foul shot with 2:13 to play.

Iowa 75, The Citadel 48 -- Anthony Tucker made seven three-pointers and scored 21 points to lead Iowa (3-0) over The Citadel (1-2).

Penn State 89, Hartford 64 -- Stanley Pringle made six three-pointers and scored 23 points, and Brookhaven graduate Jamelle Cornley had 17 points and 10 rebounds in leading Penn State (2-0) over Hartford (0-3) in the Philly Hoop Group Classic.

Wow, great win for Illinois and the Big 11. Memorial is one of the toughest places to play at in America. I knew McCamey was no ordinary Big 11 player after watching him last season.

Same thing goes for Michigan. Deep down I wanted to project them as the 5th best team in conference but I succumbed a little to the influence of this board. Not proud of that.....Manny owns!

Both UM and UI are making a strong case for being tournament teams. Their stars can carry them a long way. And UI will receive a boost when Legion becomes eligible. Looks like it's not a down year for the conference afterall (don't pundits say that every year).

Wisconsin is entering a potential rough stretch of games in the U.S. Virgin Islands this weekend. They'll play San Diego on Sunday (could have been Miami, SD is tougher though IMO) and UCONN if they win on Monday. The Toreros return all five starters from the team who beat UCONN last season and made it to the 2nd round of the NCAA's.

I am trying to remember but doesn't San Diego State have a player who played on his country's Olympic team. I remember watching one of the US games and was very impressed with a player from another country who I believe played for San Diego State.

Wisconsin plays USD, not to be confused with SDSU. The only semi prominent foreigner on either team is Roberto Mafra of Brazil, who plays on USD. The U.S. didn't play Brazil though. Are you thinking of Patty Mills, the blur of a point guard from Australia who plays for St. Mary's?

That's the guy. I wonder how he got away from all the other universities in the country.

Wisconsin defeated San Diego by 15 to advance to the Paradise Jam Final after UCONN. A lot different feeling tonight than Friday when they were taken into overtime by Iona (who doesn't appear a complete slouch having beaten Valpo by 20 subsequently), but I never worried that they would come around this season. They always have hiccups early in the season, especially in these island tournaments. Were down against Missouri State by 20 in '06 before eventually losing at the buzzer and were taken to overtime by Easter Kentucky in '05.

The Badgers held the potent Torero attack led by Gino Pomare, Rob Jones, and Brandon Johnson; to just 42 points.

This is what Wisconsin does - improve throughout the season.

Another down year for the Big 11.

Bernini, it is not fair for you to say it's a "down year" for the Big 10 at this point. The conference has collectively lost only one game so far. Indiana is down, but the Big 10 is a much stronger league than the SEC and is also stronger than the Pac-10 this year. The Big 10 will not finish last in RPI among the BCS conferences this year.

The Big 10 is clearly stronger than last year.

I think it's going to be a very interesting year for college bball. Outside of Carolina, I don't think there is a clear next crop of teams.

As far as mid-majors go.....Xavier is going to have a great year. I wish tOSU got in on Terrell Holloway(decommitted from Indiana and is now a fresh PG at XU). Kid has a nice stroke, great handle, and gets into the paint whenever he wants. He has to learn that the underhand flips and scoops at the rim won't work at this level, but it was impressive watching him get to the rim whenever he wanted against Memphis.

I'm not surprised you couldn't detect my sarcasm (obvious given the context) remembering your previous posts in this thread.
