08-09 Big Ten Basketball Season

Anyone else here think we need to scrap the freaking zone defense at one point or another? Every legitimate contender has to be able to MAN up and play real defense. ... why we stay in this pansy ass zone is beyond me at times...
How playing zone defense relates to one's manliness is a head-scratcher.

Our problems do not relate primarily to our defense. They relate to the fact that we allow our opponents to get so many more shots than we ourselves take. That comes down to not taking good care of the ball and not rebounding. And rebounding has very little to do with man vs. zone; it has to do with who wants the basketball more.

Actually, rebounding the basketball has a lot to do with man vs zone defense. Its much easier to get your rear into a man and box him out effectively in a man defense situation than it is in a zone defense. Am I saying you are incorrect with the "who wants it more?" philosophy, no because that is also true.

More ref talk:

What the hell is that official in the Indiana/Michigan St. game doing?

For those not watching, during a timeout the referee went over to MSU's huddle, confronted Izzo and immediately T'd him up. He walked all the away from half-court in the middle of a timeout and interrupted Izzo, then gave him a technical.

IU is playing tough on Senior Night, last home game in an abomination of a season for the Hoosiers.

That wasn't his only incident in that game, let alone this season.

Earlier he elbowed Goran Sutton below the belt as they ran down the court. :shake:

I'm not one to root for a college kid to get injured, but it sure didn't break my heart to see Dumes leave tonight's game with a hurt knee.

I hope it's nothing too serious, but I kinda hope it hurts like hell.

There will be a lot of talk this weekend about how conferences are doing in the tourney but for me it says more when lower seeds beat higher seeds, if you believe there is any merit to the seeding process.

Some will say the Big East is off to a good start. Three of their teams are one seeds - of course they won. Frankly, Pitt looked like shit while 6th seeded WVU got whupped by 11th seeded Dayton. Marquette barely held off Utah State, who lost to Saint Mary's in a brackbuster when Patty Mills wasn't playing for SMC. Was that really a great first round?

The ACC? Duke and Carolina rolled 15th and 16th seeds. YAWN. Fourth seeded Wake got embarrassed by 13th seeded CSU. 5th seed FSU lost to Wiscy. 7th seeded Clemson lost to scUM. Did they have a good first round?

Two double digit seeds from the Big Ten defeated higher seeded ACC teams. I got your ACC-Big Ten challenge right there. Sparty rolled, as they should. 10th seeded Minny lost, as the seed would indicate. Purdue won, as they were supposed to do. Illinois, missing a starter to injury, lost to a 12th seeded team that returned all 5 starters from a Sweet 16 of last year. We lost in double OT in an 8-9 game.

We had a good first round. To me, only the PAC 10 did more in terms of shattering expectations. The Big East was lackluster and the ACC fell flat.

Eat shit, Hubert Davis and Digger Phelps. :pissed:

That 6-0 first round by the Big 12 didn't get your attention? :wink2:

Sure - cashed in on Okie State, Oklahoma, and Missouri. :pimp:

I was focusing on the Big East and ACC because every time (or so it seemed) I turned on Digger and Hubert it was the Big Ten sucks, ACC this, Big East that. The Big XII wasn't really on my mind (obviously)

The Columbus Dispatch : NCAA looking into UConn allegations

Jake Kelly has been released from Iowa, his father says. Bob Kelly said that the sophomore had asked to be released so he could be closer to his Terre Haute, Ind., home following his mother's death. Jake Kelly averaged 11.6 points per game this season.

Indiana guard Malik Story will transfer to a school closer to his home in Los Angeles.

Not only Jake but possibly two or three others. Iowa will assume Indiana's spot in the Big 10 standings next year which is to bad because I enjoyed seeing Indiana at the bottom.

Kelly appears gone; Peterson, too? Davis leaves for D-II team

It appears sophomore Jake Kelly is set to leave Iowa, just two weeks after being named Big Ten Player of the Week.

Kelly?s father, Bob, said he didn?t want to comment about his son leaving the team ? yet.

?Well, I really haven?t been informed about any official announcement so I?d hate to comment,? Bob Kelly said. ?I?d be glad once anything comes out about him leaving or what he?s doing. I just wouldn?t feel right stepping in front of Jake on that.?

Sophomore guard Jeff Peterson ?most likely? plans to transfer to Missouri State in his hometown of Springfield, Mo., a close friend of Peterson?s said Wednesday.

Junior Jermain Davis said today he is leaving the Iowa men?s basketball team for Minnesota State-Mankato after the spring semester. He said he thought about leaving during the final two months of the season.
