Urban Meyer met with the media today and revealed that Donovan Munger will no longer be playing football.

The junior defensive tackle was expected to compete for one of the two vacant starting jobs this year but will instead retire due to pulmonary embolism which is a blood clot issue.

Munger played in 23 games for the Buckeyes and was a former consensus four-star recruit. He was listed as the starter in the Fiesta Bowl against Notre Dame, filling in for Adolphus Washington.

The Buckeyes head coach might be the best when it comes to getting players to the next level.

"Urban needed to announce that Jamarco Jones is the starting LT about as much as he needs to announce that JT Barrett is the starting QB"

- Tony Gerdeman, The O-Zone

If you've been following spring practice at all, you probably already knew that Jamarco Jones was the overwhelming favorite to get the starting nod at left tackle. It probably didn't even need to be said at all. But in his press availability today, Urban Meyer confirmed that Jones did, in fact, win the starting left tackle job, further solidifying Ohio State's line next year.

Jones, a junior, was a high four-star prospect from the class of 2014, who picked Ohio State over basically everybody. We now know that Pat Elfein will be at center, and Billy Price will be the left guard. The rest of the offensive line, and the two deep, remains to be seen.

"It's different today. It's different. It's a winner/loser day at Ohio State. This is job vs. no job. This is live. Let the dog eat."

- Urban Meyer, via Albert Breer, NFL.com

Breer goes into great depth about the developing NFL talent pipeline, and the role that Ohio State, and specifically Urban Meyer has played in that. It's well documented that the Buckeyes are expected to own the draft. They'll attempt to break their own record for players selected from a school in one year (14), and will try to break Miami's record six first-round picks in a single draft. Meyer's approach is compared to that of John Calipari of Kentucky men's basketball by Breer, having a focus on getting from "Point A" (high school) to "Point B" (the NFL). But Breer documents just how Meyer keeps his players going, and Meyer and linebacker Darron Lee bring up Winner/Loser Day. While some of the players (such as Lee) come to Ohio State without a position, they are kept competing throughout, essentially putting a scoreboard on everything.

"There's no such thing as doing a drill here -- we keep score," Meyer told Breer. Meyer also told Breer that when things are over, "someone gets Gatorade, and the other guy runs gassers and is drinking out of a hose." That has clearly been working for Meyer. No matter where he has coached, he's produced NFL talent. It has certainly been more abundant at Florida and Ohio State (and understandably so), but it appears Meyer just gets better and better as the years go by. Meyer also makes sure the program does what they can to help kids graduate in three years, so they also head to the league as graduates, basically making sure each athlete is taken care of in every aspect possible. After reading, it's no wonder why the Buckeyes have been so great under Meyer.

"[Eli] Apple wanted to be on that wall. He needed to be on that wall."

- Bill Bender, Sporting News

Bender talks about Eli Apple going through Ohio State facilities, seeing pictures of Shawn Springs, Antoine Winfield, and other Buckeye cornerback greats on the walls when he was just in middle school. He knew then that he wanted to be on that wall, featured with other players of immense talent that went on to make big impacts in the NFL. It seemed he did his part in his three years at Ohio State, playing a big part in their 2014 national championship team, and is expected to be the ninth cornerback from Columbus to be taken in the first round in the past 25 years.

That's led to the discussion of Ohio State being Cornerback U, something our Ian Hartitz similarly discussed back in November. It's hard to make a case against Ohio State, and other universities certainly have their arguments to make, but there's no denying Ohio State's resume is pretty darn impressive. To see how well Apple does at the next level will help further determine where Ohio State stands in the realm of schools who claim Cornerback U status. Bender also appropriately points out the impact that Kerry Coombs has played in the development of Buckeye corners in more recent times.

Former Ohio State linebacker Darron Lee followed in the footsteps of former quarterback and wide receiver Braxton Miller, and threw out the first pitch for the Cincinnati Reds Wednesday afternoon prior to their game against the Colorado Rockies. Lee might have brought the team better luck though, as the Reds pulled out the 6-5 win over the Rockies. On the night of Miller's first pitch, the Reds took a 5-1 loss at the hands of the same Rockies team.

Lee is expected to be a first round pick in the 2016 NFL Draft slated for April 28, and it doesn't seem like he'd be too disappointed if he stayed close to home and ended up on the Cincinnati Bengals. But he does want you to know that he threw out a good first pitch:

The 6'4 defensive lineman's career is cut short.

Ohio State defensive lineman Donovan Munger's football career is over, due to pulmonary embolism. Urban Meyer told a crowd of gathered reporters who relayed the news afterwards. The 6'4 defensive lineman was diagnosed with a blood clot before the 2013 season, and has just not been able to shake the illness, bringing his career to an unfortunate, early ending.

Munger was a four-star prospect coming out of high school, and committed to the Buckeyes back on Dec. 9, 2012. He appeared in 11 games for the Buckeyes in their 2014 national championship season, accumulating five tackles and one tackle-for-loss, while seeing his most action early in the season against Kent State and Illinois.

The recent setback with a pulmonary embolism kept him from reaching his full potential, after once showing much promise in Columbus. The loss of Munger puts the Buckeyes at 86 scholarship players, meaning they're one over the 85 limit required at the start of fall camp.

We wish the best moving forward for the Shaker Heights native, in health and in future endeavors.

Buckeye wide receiver Torrance Gibson filmed his teammates joining in on the craze.

Ohio State WR Torrance Gibson posted a video of teammates dancing to "My Boo" by Ghost Town DJs, a movement that has picked up as of late, thanks to Maryland basketball players Jared Nickens, Jaylen Brantley and Damonte Dodd

Gibson and his teammates posted videos of themselves dancing in a number of different locations, similar to that of the Maryland basketball players. The movement is spreading, and it's spreading fast.

If these guys move just as well on the football field, the Buckeyes should be in for a good 2016. Gibson is expected to have a big role this season on the field, and it's good to see him and his teammates having fun around the football facilities and bonding.

Also, it's nice that this song has come back into rotation after 20 (!) years.

We remind everybody not to get too excited over one performance.

Ohio State's spring game is in the books, which means it is time to wildly overrate or completely overlook a few particular players and position groups, because hey, it's the only football-like substance we're going to have over the next several months.

Or, we could pump the brakes. I (Matt Brown) and Colton Denning discuss Ohio State's spring game in our latest podcast, and look to pump the brakes on any players that would be easy to get a bit too excited about after one spring game performance (like say, Torrance Gibson). They discuss how dumb and wrong they were for doubting Ohio State's ability to get to 100,000 fans, what insights they took from the game, which was more fun than either of them expected, and also why you need to learn how to cook this offseason.

LGHL Winners and losers from the Big Ten's huge TV deal with Fox

Winners and losers from the Big Ten's huge TV deal with Fox
Matt Brown
via our friends at Land-Grant Holy Land
Visit their fantastic blog and read the full article (and so much more) here

usa-today-7900580.0.jpg

The Big Ten is about to get an even bigger paycheck. Here's what that means.

We've known for a while that the Big Ten was going to get paid when it came time to negotiate their next TV deal. Now, we're starting to get an idea for just how much they're going to be paid. Yesterday afternoon, it was reported that the Big Ten is nearing an agreement to sell *half* of their rights to Fox for as much as $250M a year. That would still leave the Big Ten with the ability to sell the other half of their rights to say, ESPN, or Turner, or NBC, and pay out $40M, or even more, to each individual school, just from TV.

That is a lot of money. And one conference potentially getting that much coin has implications beyond just the Big Ten. Here's a look and who wins, and who may lose, from this huge deal.

Winners

The Big Ten

This goes without saying, of course, but landing this much for just half of the rights (for comparison sake, $250M is about what the Pac-12 will get in 2019 for all of their TV rights) is a huge win for Big Ten athletic departments, especially in the fact of concerns that cable-cutting would limit the growth of future TV revenues. The other major conferences won't get a chance to renegotiate their deals until later in the 2020s, so if the market doesn't turn for the worse, the Big Ten gets the last big TV payday in the sport. Some projections have Big Ten schools getting payouts of nearly $60 million

This is especially huge news for the smaller athletic departments in the conference. Newcomers like Rutgers and Maryland were desperately depending on a sharp increase in TV money to help shore up their own balance sheets, and pay for needed capital programs to get their facilities up to B1G quality. It's huge for the Purdues and Indianas of the world, who can perhaps use the money to shore up recruiting infrastructure. And of course, the extra money is nice for Ohio State and all, but it's not like the Buckeyes are short of the cash they need to be successful right now.

With this kind of windfall, geography be damned, Big Ten programs with lagging athletic departments are running out of excuses. Yes, your weather might be bad. You know what can keep you warm during those Madison winters? The insulation that comes from millions and millions of TV dollars.

The Big East

The Big East, home of national champion Villanova, has their basketball games on Fox Sports 1. They've been able to boast high quality competition, strong tradition -- but the TV ratings for their games have been terrible. With more Big Ten basketball games moving to FS1, you'll see an increased demand for the channel from any stragglers who don't have it in their package, and a general improved profile for the channel in general. It's possible a few DePaul games might get moved to Fox Sports 2 if they get bumped by other Big Ten basketball games, but in general, increased visibility for the main channel for your games is a good thing for the league.

Losers

The Big 12

If you were already predisposed to worry about the widening gap between the Big Ten/SEC and other Power 5 conferences, like say, the Big 12 is, then the Big Ten getting another, perhaps larger than expected, stack of cash isn't great. But it isn't just about the Big Ten getting more money in a vacuum. Big Ten games getting moved to FS1 could directly hurt the Big 12.

Big 12 games are already on FS1, but the league apparently has a low number of guaranteed games on the platform. (a minimum of six games a year). So if that Texas Tech/Kansas State game was going to be slotted to FS1, there's a chance it's getting bumped to FS2 or FSN to make room for, I dunno, Michigan State/Illinois, even if that's going to be a worse game. The massive fanbases around Big Ten programs make those games attractive TV properties, so if you are a fan used having regular games on FS1, you may want to make sure you get the other Fox channels in your package.

Plus, if you were worried about Oklahoma maybe deciding that trying to keep this whole Big 12 thing together isn't worth it, well, seeing all these Big Ten dollar signs probably isn't helping.

BYU

Until the next big round of conference TV deals comes open in the mid 2020s, BYU's deal with ESPN might be the last semi-large TV deal left to be renegotiated. BYU's deal ends in either 2018 or 2019 (ESPN holds an option year), and has been integral to their survival as an independent. So it's probably not a great sign to hear that ESPN "presented a non-competitive bid several weeks ago, as the company continues to look for areas to save costs", per the SBJ. If ESPN wasn't willing to open their wallet for one of the most valuable properties in college athletics, are they going to be willing to open their wallet to keep BYU? BYU's deal is obviously much, much smaller (estimations have it as between $6-$8M a year), and even if ESPN isn't willing to go higher, it doesn't mean that Fox, or NBC, or somebody else wouldn't be. But if you are a fan of a program who needs to have a strong relationship with ESPN, further confirmation that they're less willing to write big checks isn't a promising sign.

The consumer

If you have really strong opinions about Fox's broadcast philosophy or talent, or have a really narrow cable package, you may not love this deal. Maybe Clay Travis won't be a TV personality for the entire length of this contract, but he'll probably be in and around Fox Sports' overall coverage and maybe you don't love that.

It's entirely possible that over the course of this contract that at least one Ohio State basketball game will be banished to some far-flung FS2/FSN channel that you don't have yet, or can't find, and that will cause frustration.

Though there's a good amount of time between now and then, Fox Sports Go, the networks' answer to WatchESPN, is extremely sub-standard. Broadcasts routinely cut off mid-game in favor of other contests without rhyme or reason and sometimes the streams don't even return. The dependability and quality on mobile devices regularly seem less reliable than similar offerings. There's also no AppleTV channel, which even Yahoo! offered for their one off NFL broadcast and NBC Sports has for Premier League soccer.

Plus if your cable provider doesn't carry FS2, you can't watch it on Fox Sports Go either.

Maybe they can fix some of those issues between now and the first Big Ten game, but right now, the product just isn't as good as their competitors.

* * *

There's still a lot to be figured out for this deal. Who will buy the other half of the Big Ten rights? Can the Big Ten afford to completely cut away ESPN and sell it to say, Turner? What will happen to the Big Ten's digital rights? What will the final numbers be? Is any of this even close to sustainable?

We'll find out more over the offseason. But for now, take comfort in knowing that any construction projects you were hoping your school would start suddenly got a little easier to pay for. Keep that in mind while you try to figure out if you get FS2 on your cable package.

The former Ohio State lineman channeled the most rabid Buckeye fans for his local pro hockey team.

The Pittsburgh Penguins-New York Rangers' Game 3 on Tuesday night was a tense one.

The Jets' Pro Bowl center was on hand to cheer on his fellow New York professional team -- and he didn't exactly shy away from giving the visitors a piece of mind:

With an emphasis on finding talent in the Buckeye State, Urban Meyer sets his sights on one of the top lineman in Ohio.

Fighting for Fairfield

According to reports, Urban Meyer has made in-state offensive lineman Jackson Carman (Fairfield, Ohio / Fairfield) one of the highest priorities of the 2018 class. Carman, who holds 22 total offers, is considered the top lineman in the state of Ohio and one of the top overall players at his position in the country.

Ohio State has the lead in this recruitment right now, but is battling the likes of Michigan and Michigan State. Carman is a monster at 6-foot-6, 305 pounds. The Fairfield prospect was on campus during the spring game last weekend, further advancing his relationship with the Ohio State coaching staff.

Words can't expressed how thankful I am to have received my 9th offer from The Ohio State University ! ⚪ #GoBucks pic.twitter.com/Ns2kGDNgyR

— Jackson Carman (@Jackson_Carman) April 18, 2016

Carman's recruitment has a lot of time to play out, but Ohio State has to feel good about where they stand. Carman has unofficially visited Columbus twice this month and more visits are sure to come this summer.

Bringing the Cleveland native to Columbus

On the hardwood, Ohio State was at Holy Name High School on Tuesday to see 2018 shooting guard Dwayne Cohill. Cohill, who currently holds four offers, is a top 100 player in his class and the No.1 rated player in the state of Ohio. Ohio State is thought to be the favorite at this point, though Penn State is making a push to sign the 6-foot-2 athlete.

A four-star prospect, Cohill is the type of player that Ohio State needs to get back to landing. He has the ability to create his own shot, and is one of the top prospects in the state. The Buckeyes need to get back to putting a fence around the state of Ohio, and picking up Cohill would be a great addition. Still, a long way to go in this one, but Ohio State should feel optimistic.

Here's a sample of what the Buckeyes would be getting from Cohill.

The Massillon Man

It was a packed house at Jackson High School in Massillon, Ohio, as teams took a gander at Kyle Young, a blue-chip recruit from the class of 2017.

One of the schools to witness Mr.Young: Ohio State

Ohio State will be in Massillon, Ohio (Jackson HS) tonight to check in with 2017/SF/6-foot-7/Kyle Young.

— PrepScouting (NCAA) (@highmajorscoop) April 19, 2016

While the Buckeyes checked in on the 6-foot-7 small forward, a rival Big Ten institution swooped in and gave the young man a scholarship.

Michigan State has offered '17 Massillon Jackson SF Kyle Young.

The battle for Young is an intriguing one, as 247Sports and their Crystal Ball Prediction have the Massillon product going to Ann Arbor, Mich. to play college ball.

We'll see how this unfolds the Buckeyes as time goes on.
