The Buckeyes go west for this 2017 offer

Falo catches Bucks offer


With two new commitments in the past few days, Ohio State has put together a memorable recruiting week. The Buckeyes were able to pull 2017 wide receiver Trevon Grimes (St. Thomas Aquinas) from the state of Florida and fellow WR of the 2017 class Tyjon Lindsey (Bishop Gorman) all the way from Nevada. Lindsey will join defensive tackle Haskell Garrett and quarterback Tate Martell as the members of Bishop Gorman’s 2017 class to accept their offers to OSU.

On Wednesday, Ohio State went back out on the west coast to begin their pursuit of another prospect in this year’s class. Tight end Josh Falo (Sacramento, CA / Inderkum), a four-star player, was the latest recipient of a Buckeye offer.


Falo is a 6-foot-5, 227-pounder and is graded out as a top five player at the tight end position in this class. The Sacramento native is also ranked 161st overall and the 16th top player from the ultra talented state of California.

In order for the Buckeyes to make a play for Falo, they will need him to make the trip from Cali to Columbus for a visit. For now, all signs point to Falo taking his big frame out to Eugene to suit up for Mark Helfrich and the Oregon Ducks.

OSU in good spot for top safety


247Sports’ Steve Wiltfong put together a piece highlighting just how special 2017 cornerback Jeffrey Okudah (Grand Prairie, TX /South Grand Prairie) is. Wiltfong stated that the five-star prospect is “first defensive back taken in the NFL Draft special” and included portions of others raving about the 6-foot-1, 190-pounder.

As we all know, Okudah is one of Ohio State’s top targets in this year’s class and Wiltfong dropped a few words that should definitely have Buckeye fans feeling good on where they stand with the South Grand Prairie standout. According to Wiltfong, everything he hears has Okudah winding up at Ohio State. The 247Sports Crystal Ball supports that claim, as the Buckeyes are the wide favorite.


Okudah is the six best player in the class, the No.1 cornerback in the country and the No.2 player from the state of Texas. Make no mistake, if the Buckeyes do seal the deal with Okudah, they will continue to create space for the No. 1 ranked class for 2017.

They could also create a discussion for the greatest recruiting class ever on paper.

Thamel takes notice of the relatively quiet offseason that Ohio State has had following a very loud and hyped 2015 season. It didn’t end the way that they wanted, and the Buckeyes will be replacing 16 starters. But it’s not a huge deal, considering the Buckeyes have not only extremely talented young players ready to make their leap onto the Ohio Stadium field, but a large quantity of those types of players. Combine that with many positions up in the air and competition heavy, and you have a team that’s hungry to compete, starting in practice.

Thamel draws comparisons between this team, and the 2014 team that was able to make an unexpected run to the first College Football Playoff National Championship. That’s a pretty high expectation to put on this team, but at the same time, it’s not totally unrealistic based on the recruits they have brought in. For this, Thamel sees the Buckeyes having another 2-3 year stretch where they’re at the top of the college football world. If the 2017 recruiting class holds firm, it wouldn’t be so farfetched to see Urban Meyer develop a dynasty like what we’ve seen at Alabama under Nick Saban.

“New Orleans Saints: S Vonn Bell”

The Ringer’s Danny Kelly has put together his 32 x factors of the upcoming 2016 NFL season, and for the New Orleans Saints, Kelly has chosen none other than former Ohio State safety Vonn Bell. Kelly views these players as, “the guy who comes into the season with a wide range of possible outcomes — and whichever one he achieves will likely have an outsize impact upon his team’s fortunes.” That undoubtedly seems like Bell.

The Saints have notably had a bad defense for the past 2-3 seasons, and have desperately needed help on that side of the ball. The Saints defense will be led by coordinator Dennis Allen, who was the defensive coordinator for the 2011 Denver Broncos that largely led them to an 8-win season with horrendous quarterback play. With coaches like Allen and Sean Payton coaching the way, Bell has good leadership around him. Of Bell, Kelly said, “he can run step for step with receivers, has good ball skills, and most important, rarely gets beat deep .” That’s pretty good praise for the second-round pick. Hopefully Bell and fellow former Buckeye Michael Thomas can find great success with the black and gold.

Kirk Herbstreit's 2016 Herbie Awards and College Football Playoff picks


Kirk Herbstreit’s candidates and winners of his 2016 Herbie Awards are here, and there are some Buckeyes on the list. Because of course, the list wouldn’t be complete without them. For “Biggest Shoes to Fill,” Herbie has Ohio State running back Mike Weber as the winner. Herbie also has Ohio State taking the Big Ten title over Minnesota, and the Buckeyes also appearing as a College Football Playoff team.

Other nominees for the Herbie Awards were for J.T. Barrett, who was nominated for “Top 4,000/1,000 Threat”, and “Ultimate Herbie.” Mike Weber, who, aside from winning “Biggest Shoes to Fill,” was nominated for “Welcome to the Party.” And Sam Hubbard was nominated for “Breakout Star.” So if the Herbie Awards are any indication, the Buckeyes have some guys you should have on your radar heading into the season.

Former Ohio State Buckeye Corey Linsley has had quite the offseason, and not in a good way. Linsley has torn his hamstring twice this offseason. The first time came in April during a workout, shortly after the Packers offseason program had begun. After thinking it had healed, he tore it again in July, right before training camp, and has been on the PUP list since. He also lost his starting job to JC Tretter as a result.

But for somebody who has had a pretty awful offseason, Linsley has an incredibly good mindset. He told Wilde that despite what you might think, it’s not so hard on him. “It would be if I wasn’t confident in what I can do,” Linsley replied. “I’m not talking about arrogance or anything. But true confidence. To rest assured that you know what you can do.” He added, “Whenever I get back, it’s just a matter of taking it from there. You control what you can control, and there’s not much else you can do.” That’s really the best mindset to take, but it’s much easier said than done.

Ohio State’s secondary will be challenged out of the gates in 2016

The Buckeyes have to replace nearly their entire starting secondary -- just in time for three pass-heavy teams to start the season.

Over the last few weeks we’ve looked at two of the Buckeyes’ biggest weaknesses – the defensive line’s explosive run-stopping ability and the receivers’ explosive play potential – and now we’ll dig in to what may be their biggest weakness: the secondary.

The secondary will break in three new starters, which should make it the biggest worry spot on the defense, considering that the percentage of returning passes defended by defensive backs is the metric with the highest correlation with defensive S&P+. Out of all of the position groups hit by NFL departures, it should be the secondary that is hurt the most.

So far we’ve seen that the Buckeyes face a number of elite pass defenses, but don’t see too many elite running backs. How does the schedule work out for the secondary in 2016?


Ohio State will see five offenses that ranked in the top-25 of the passing S&P+ last season, including two in the first five games that were in the top-15 last year.

Bowling Green will test the secondary from day one


In some ways, Bowling Green is one of the worst opening week opponents the Buckeyes could have asked for. With a brand-new secondary, the Buckeyes will likely see 30+ pass attempts by the 20th-ranked S&P+ passing offense.

Thankfully, most of the major players in last year’s offense are gone. The part-architect of Bowling Green’s Baylor-style Air Raid offense, head coach Dino Babers, is gone to Syracuse, quarterback Matt Johnson has graduated, and four of their top receivers have also graduated or transferred. It’s fair to expect some regression given those personnel losses, but the offense will still challenge the back end of the Buckeye defense.

Oklahoma will be a challenge no matter how you look at it


In other ways, it’s good that the Buckeyes open with Air Raid teams in Bowling Green and Tulsa, to a lesser extent – they’re a good warm up for Oklahoma in week three. The eleventh-ranked passing S&P+ offense was even more efficient than they were explosive, ranking sixth in success rate and 19th in PPP+. With quarterback Baker Mayfield and offensive coordinator Lincoln Riley returning, the Sooners should be one of the best passing teams in the country once again.

If we’re looking for bright spots, it’s that leading receiver Sterling Shepard won’t return (and third-leading receiver Durron Neal too, to a much lesser extent). Shepard was extremely reliable, with a 74% catch rate, but also managed to be an explosive deep threat as well. He was also far and away Mayfield’s top target, with 28% of passes going his way. Senior Dede Westbrook is a serviceable replacement, with a similar average yards per target, catch rate, and explosiveness – but the depth behind him is fairly untested and/or ineffective. The Sooners will need to identify new top wide receivers, and fast.

But two factors still make this a formidable matchup for Malik Hooker, Gareon Conley, and the rest of the secondary: the offensive balance and the Sooners’ schedule. First, Oklahoma was two games to identify top targets – and they’ll need to quickly, given the game against Houston. Second, Oklahoma won’t be a one-trick offense given Samaje Perine and Joe Mixon in the backfield. No other team on Ohio State’s schedule is as well-rounded.

The Buckeyes’ best shot will be to get to Mayfield with a fierce pass rush – Oklahoma’s offensive line was just 101st in adjusted sack rate last year and they lost their top two offensive linemen.

Indiana is no push-over


As Ty and Dan said in a recent preview episode of The Solid Verbal (a little over 24 minutes in), the Hoosiers are just an average defense (rather than an abysmally poor one) away from consistent 8-4 type seasons. The Hoosiers’ big strength is their explosiveness ( 24th in IsoPPP+), and the passing game’s explosiveness in particular, which was 14th in PPP+.

Quarterback Nate Sudfeld was extremely effective, with just seven interceptions and 8.3 yards per attempt. His replacement, Zander Diamont, was not nearly as effective in limited action – just a 48.4% completion rate and about half average yards per attempt (4.4). But you have to give Kevin Wilson the benefit of the doubt at some point – he’s always seemed to churn out quality passing games since he arrived in Bloomington. Further, the Hoosiers return their top four receiving targets. The passing game might take a slight hit, but it’s hard not to view the Hoosiers as another threat for a shootout with the Buckeyes once again.

Nebraska’s Tommy Armstrong is pretty legit?


Tommy Armstrong flew under the radar in Mike Riley’s first year at Nebraska, but he piled up the stats, throwing for 3,000 yards at seven yards per attempt. The problem was that he also threw 16 interceptions, at nearly a 4% rate. Cut down on the interceptions and Nebraska has a formidable passing attack (though, it’s worth noting that most of his damage was done to the worst teams on the Huskers’ schedule) with his top six targets all returning.

Nebraska wouldn’t come to mind as a big offensive threat, but there’s reason for at least a little concern, given the stability at quarterback and wide receiver.

Jim Harbaugh, quarterback whisperer


After what Harbaugh did with Jake Rudock, maybe that reputation is deserved. Michigan will get its third quarterback in as many years, likely the transfer John O’Korn from Houston. O’Korn didn’t post the most impressive numbers at Houston (52% completion rate, a 6% sack rate, and just 4.8 yards per attempt), but most have written off quarterback as a concern this offseason due to Michigan’s returning wide receivers and Harbaugh’s ability to develop quarterbacks.

Michigan’s top five receiving targets return for 2016, including Amara Darboh and Jehu Chesson. Neither one of these top threats is dominant, nor are they specialized as either possession or big play threats – both have just decent catch rates (60%-63%) and explosiveness potential (1.31-1.67 IsoPPP). But together they are a fairly solid, dependable bunch.

The best news for Ohio State is that they will face better wide receivers earlier in the season, and the secondary will have eleven games worth of experience by the time The Game rolls around.

Overall, the Buckeyes don’t have a schedule full of elite offenses – it’s really just the three Air Raid teams to start the season and then Michigan at the end that should challenge the secondary the most. Sure, Penn State might pull things together with their new offensive coordinator and Nebraska should be decent, but the biggest challenge will undoubtedly be the beginning of the season for the young defense.

The Big Ten has sent a team to the playoff both years we’ve had one, and with Michigan getting a ton of preseason love, Ohio State set to promote a zillion four and five stars, and with Michigan State fueled by white hot DISRESPECKT and Malik McDowell, there are multiple candidates to get the conference a playoff bid for the third year in a row.

But all three of those teams, along with other would-be Big Ten contenders, have significant questions about their roster. Is it possible that this is the year the elite of the Big Ten beat each other up a little bit, and keep the conference out of the playoff? Could the ACC be the first conference to get two teams in the Final Four of college football?
