Chris Holtmann continues his recruiting tear in the 2019 class as the Buckeyes make the cut for one of the country’s top prospects.

Chris Holtmann has successfully changed the narrative of Ohio State’s basketball future in one year in Columbus. As the head of the Buckeye basketball program, Holtmann led the team to its first NCAA tournament bid since 2015 and is making his mark in the recruiting world.

Ohio State brought in the country’s No. 27 recruiting class for 2018 highlighted by four-star commitments from shooting guard Luther Muhammad and power forward Jaedon Ledee. However, it is the 2019 recruiting class that is putting Holtmann in the conversation of the country’s best recruiters in the sport.

With verbal commitments from five-star point guard DJ Carton and four-star small forward Alonzo Gaffney, Ohio State sits at No. 5 nationally and atop the Big Ten recruiting rankings. But Holtmann isn’t done and the Buckeyes are getting closer to earning a commitment from one of their top remaining targets in the class.

Four-star PF E.J. Liddell (Belleville, IL / BellevilleWest) announced his top five schools Monday afternoon and included Ohio State.

TBD. @TiptonEdits pic.twitter.com/BetGMlw1re

— EJ Liddell (@EasyE2432) August 13, 2018

Alongside Ohio State, Liddell included Missouri, Illinois, Wisconsin and Kansas State in the schools he is choosing to focus on to close out his recruitment.

Liddell including Ohio State in his top schools did not come as a surprise. He took an unofficial visit to the University back in early June and has an official visit scheduled for Aug. 31. If the upcoming visit goes as well as the previous, Liddell could be on commitment watch.

The 247Sports Crystal Ball Predictions list the Buckeyes as the heavy favorites to earn Liddell’s services with 83 percent of the expert predictions leaning in their direction. With Missouri being the only other school to receive votes.

If the tea leaves are true and Liddell eventually commits to the Buckeyes, it would likely cement them among the country’s top classes for next year. Liddell is the the nation’s No. 12 PF and is the No. 47 overall prospect, according to to the 247Sports Composite Rankings.

Update on Zach Harrison

If you have been keeping up with Ohio State football recruiting, Zach Harrison (Lewis Center, OH / Olentangy Orange) is a name you have been hearing for years. The five-star defensive end is easily the Buckeyes top remaining prospect and has long been associated with Ohio State.

Harrison had hoped to announce his collegiate school of choice today but due to current state of affairs surrounding the Ohio State football program, he has opted to delay his commitment. However, his indecision isn’t due strictly to Urban Meyer being investigated by the University and being placed on paid administrative leave. Harrison was finding it tough to come to an ultimate decision even before the uncertainty.

Harrison has come to a final three of Ohio State, Penn State and Michigan and plans to officially visit all three.

Adam Kramer of Bleacher Report spoke with Harrison and his mother Tracey on the state of his recruitment—and he had a lot to say in regards to Ohio State.

On the situation regarding Urban Meyer:

“It just has to play out,” Tracey says. “I don’t know if that’s going to change his mind either way. Zach is far more focused on Orange football right now.”

Kramer goes into further detail into how the two feel about Meyer’s situation and how they don’t want it to play any role in his decision process. Both Zach and his mother want to wait and see how it all plays out before taking it into consideration.

Also interesting to note is how Zach is looking at his recruitment right now. Kramer states that the elite prospect doesn’t like to focus too much on making a decision and Harrison backed this up in his own words.

“It’s stressful trying to make the right decision,” Zach says. “Sometimes you just feel like you won’t.”

Leading his recruitment for Ohio State is defensive line coach Larry Johnson and Harrison only had positive things to say about Johnson and the Buckeyes.

“Obviously, Coach Jay [defensive line coach Larry Johnson] is one of the best, if not the best to ever do it on the defensive line. They win a lot of games. And if I go there, I’d be a hometown hero.”

It is apparent that Ohio State is still very much in play for Harrison, if not still the favorite to land him. Harrison also admits to knowing that if he commits to Ohio State he will be known as a “hometown hero,” but this is not always the best realization.

In Ohio State’s 2018 recruiting class, Meyer lost out on a prospect in a similar situation when five-star offensive tackle Jackson Carman committed to Clemson over the Buckeyes after long being viewed as a sure-fire commit to Ohio State, his hometown school.

Harrison has a lot to think about and because of this, he has decided to extend his recruitment and see what his three finalists have to offer. This isn’t a bad thing, though, as it gives Meyer and the Ohio State coaching staff another shot to show him what all the University has to offer him.

A high ankle sprain could keep him sidelined for weeks.

“He’s got a bad ankle sprain. He didn’t break his leg, but he’s got a real bad, serious ankle sprain. It’s a high ankle sprain plus. He’s hobbling around pretty good right now.”

-Seattle Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll, via Liz Matthews, Seahawks Wire

It’s only one week into the NFL preseason, but it’s already been a rough one for the Seattle Seahawks offensive line. In addition to losing tackle Isaiah Battle in Thursday night’s preseason matchup, the Seahawks also lost Ohio State product Jamarco Jones to a high-ankle sprain. Jones was carted off of the field in the preseason opener, a 19-17 loss to the Indianapolis Colts. Head coach Pete Carroll said that Jones is “day-to-day,” but could miss considerable time as he recovers from the sprain.

Jones, who was selected in the fifth round of this year’s NFL Draft, was expected to compete for the starting right tackle spot with incumbent Germain Ifedi, the Seahawks first-round pick in 2016. Ifedi, who was the most penalized player in the league last season with 20 calls against him, had been less than impressive throughout camp and preseason thus far, and Jones was able to step in early. Now, the competition for the starting role will be suspended until Jones can come back, according to Carroll.

Jones had been sitting as the No. 2 left tackle for most of preseason behind four-time Pro Bowler Duane Brown, but moved over to the right side last week after Ifedi continued to exhibit problems with penalties.

The Seahawks offensive line has a lot to improve on from last season. The unit will be breaking in Mike Solari, the new line coach, after Tom Cable was fired at the end of the 2017-18 season. Jones, who shined on a powerful offensive line during his 27-consecutive starts at left tackle at Ohio State, was a worthy addition to the Seahawks with the 168th overall pick in April’s draft. Jones was a two-time all-conference selection during his two seasons as a starter, and supported a line which allowed for a top-20 rushing offense in each of the last four seasons.

“Just coming from where I came from, playing running back, to be honest, I didn’t know how to run a route when I first got here. So I definitely think I’m becoming a more positive receiver, being able to run routes.”

-Ohio State receiver Parris Campbell, via Tim May, The Columbus Dispatch

Parris Campbell has come a long way in his role at H-back. He had shown flashes of greatness as a sophomore, but, as a former running back (the No. 14 back, in fact, in the 2014 recruiting class), he has had a lot to learn as a receiver in his four previous seasons at Ohio State. As he prepares to enter his fifth year with the program, the H-back has continued to fine-tune his performance.

Last season, this continuous improvement led Campbell to become the team’s leader in receiving yards with 584. The work ethic that Campbell exhibits was also likely a factor in his being named a captain last year— an honor which Campbell is expected to maintain in 2018. More impressive is the fact that Campbell, after moving to receiver upon his arrival at Ohio State, moved to H-back following the departure of Curtis Samuel for the NFL, demonstrating once again his flexibility on the field.

Beyond simply being a reliable receiver, Campbell brings an explosiveness which helps to open up the offense more than traditional routes might. This speed is not surprising, given that Campbell is also an indoor track star at Ohio State. Last season, the redshirt senior led his team with 18 plays of 20 or more yards, including breakout touchdowns against Indiana and Wisconsin. Campbell was also an asset on special teams, amassing 329 total yards on kickoff returns— a 36.6 yard average. This playmaking ability has caught national attention. Campbell was named to the Paul Hornung preseason watch list, an award which recognizes the most versatile player in college football. Penn State’s Saquon Barkley won the honor last season.

Yet, there is still room for improvement for Campbell, particularly, in catching the long ball. While J.T. Barrett threw to Campbell for most of the receiver’s career, Campbell may have more opportunities to develop that aspect of his game with Dwayne Haskins at quarterback.

What did you do this weekend?

If you’re @OhioStateMTEN’s JJ Wolf, you warmed up with @rogerfederer, received a wild card into @cincytennis AND upset the No. 85 player in the world! #GoBucks | #CincyTennis pic.twitter.com/gK06mveoXa

— Ohio State Buckeyes (@OhioStAthletics) August 12, 2018

Ohio State tennis is making its mark on the international scene this summer. Rising junior J.J. Wolf, a native of Cincinnati, competed in the Western and Southern Open on a wildcard entry in his hometown over the weekend, defeating Jozef Kovalik, the No. 85 player in the world, 7-6, 7-6. His run came up short Sunday when he fell to No. 92 Marius Copil 6-4, 7-6.

It was an important win for Wolf, who has been playing on the professional circuit since the intercollegiate season ended in May. Since then, he has had six wins over top-500 ranked players in the world. The win at the Western and Southern was the biggest of his career on the professional circuit, since it was his first qualifying-match win at an ATP event.

Wolf has already made a name for himself in two seasons at Ohio State. In 2017, he was named Big Ten Freshman of the Year. This past season, he was a unanimous first-team All-Big Ten selection, winning 25 of 34 singles matches. He was a major contributor to an Ohio State squad which finished the season as the NCAA runner-up, and is expected to continue his high level of play next season— especially given what he has accomplished this summer against elite competition.

The Western and Southern Open, dating back to 1899, is among the nation’s oldest tennis tournaments and features many of the top male and female players in the world, including Serena Williams, Simona Halep, Sloane Stephens, Roger Federer, Novak Djokovic, John Isner. As an ATP Masters 1000 tournament, the open is considered a tier below the world’s four major tournaments and is the last qualifier before the U.S. Open, which begins later this month. The level of talent at this tournament makes Wolf’s win even more impressive.

We might not be getting much access to practice, but players’ families are.

While the on-going investigation into head coach Urban Meyer’s handling of domestic abuse allegations against former assistant Zach Smith might be keeping the media away from practices, another group of people got a much closer look over the weekend; the players’ families.

On Saturday and Sunday, families were invited to campus to see how things were progressing for the Buckeyes as they work towards the Sept. 1 matchup against the Oregon State Beavers. Despite all of the turmoil going on around the program, it appears that things are progressing according to plan over at the Woody Hayes Athletic Center.

With all of the hard work going on during camp, and the uncertainty swirling around the coaching staff, it looks like the players were extra happy to have their families in town as a temporary distraction from the difficult (physically and emotionally) first two weeks of camp.

This might be the exact thing that the players needed right now to get over the hump of both training camp and the working group’s investigation. There’s nothing like a hug from momma to make you feel like everything’s gonna be alright.

After a grueling start through eight practices of fall camp, we welcomed the families of our guys to our first scrimmage today! Thank you for all the support for your young men ‼️ #GoBucks #TheBrotherhood pic.twitter.com/v03bmHJCpH

The family weekend also brought another occasion for the football program to release some practice footage, and things seem to be going pretty well on both sides of the ball.

And what would a family weekend be without some photo opportunities in The Horseshoe?

The Buckeyes are still in the mix for another standout senior.

Our weekends are for friends and family, but don’t miss out on the latest news in the world of Ohio State recruiting.

Land-Grant Holy Land has your back.

OSU makes cut for 2019 forward

Holding verbal pledges from class of 2019 prospects Alonzo Gaffney, and DJ Carton, Chris Holtmann and the Ohio State staff are looking to close out their haul of future Buckeyes with another highly sought after recruit.

With offers still out to a few prospects, one of those potential Buckeyes took to his Twitter page on Sunday afternoon to let the world know his current college leaders.

Cutting things down from nearly 20 offers, four-star 2019 Power forward Omar Payne of Florida’s Montverde Academy is now concentrating on seven programs.

Making the leader list for the 6-foot-9, 195-pounder are Ohio State, Florida, Florida State, Central Florida, Louisville, Texas and LSU.

Thank you for all the school that took their time to recruit me here is my top 7

S/O @BallisWillbrant for the edit pic.twitter.com/j3UH8cLFrk

— Omar Payne (@Ogomarpayne) August 12, 2018

Although signs point towards him staying in the south, Payne the ninth power forward, and 42nd overall prospect in the 2019 class, according to the 247Sports Composite, wouldn’t be the first Montverde product to suit up in the Scarlet and Gray. A list that could certainly grow, current New Jersey Nets guard D’Angelo Russell, and OSU big man Micah Potter both spent time with the Eagles.

4-star PF plans trip to Columbus

While Payne has OSU among his current leaders list, another class of 2019 power forward will make the trek to Columbus later this month to see what the Buckeyes have to offer in person.

Making a summer’s end visit to universities, the report is that Chris Holtmann and the OSU staff will have the Minnesota native and four-star prospect Zeke Nnaji on campus August 25.

Looking to add scorers to their roster, Nnaji can definitely fill up the scorecard. A big time player for Hopkins High in Hopkins, Minnesota, the Third Team all-state selection averaged 19 points per game to help pace the Royals to an overall record of 26-2 last season as a junior.
