The top 20 quarterback recruits in the class of 2022

11. MAALIK MURPHY, GARDENA (CALIF.) JUNIPERO SERRA HIGH

247Sports Composite: 4-star | 0.9321 | No. 166 overall

Recruitment status: Committed to Texas

Measurables: 6-4.5 | 225

Player evaluation: Physically gifted signal caller with a lot of tools. Still needs game reps and experience to take his game to another level. Has a clean, easy delivery and one of the strongest arms in the class. Has tightened his release over the last year, less of a windup and gets it out quick. Shows good feet in the pocket but can continue to improve extending plays and getting out of the pocket to make a throw or running for plus yards. Has a big frame but has maintained his weight and isn't sloppy. Shows good touch on the deep ball and looks good when throwing on time and in rhythm. A natural leader who teammates will love in the locker room. Mature and works hard off the field. Very intriguing at the next level and has a ton of upside and if he maximizes his potential, has a chance to be special. – 247Sports national recruiting analyst Greg Biggins

Texas commit Maalik Murphy leads team to California state title

The dream season for Texas commit Maalik Murphy has come to a fairytale ending.

The four-star quarterback out of Gardena, California was doubted by many, and even saw his five-star ranking diminish, but he continuously proved the doubters wrong as he lead his team to CIF State Championship over Liberty High School this weekend.

This was his first full varsity season, as last season the California football season was shortened due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and the seasons prior he saw very limited action.

His limited playing time, struggles during the shortened season, and a slow start to this season had many scouts writing him off, but Murphy went on an absolute terror in the playoffs leading Junipero Serra to a section title and an eventual state championship.

Murphy was unable to finish the game due to an injury, but he did have some great plays prior to his exit, one of which didn’t even count.

Along with the super athletic hurdle that is not allowed in the CIF, Murphy also threw a touchdown pass to give his team the lead.

His team was able to hold on to win 21-16, and Murphy will now turn his focus to becoming a Longhorn and trying to be a part of the movement that brings Texas back to relevancy.

Just sayin': Then again maybe he likes competition and has the confidence that he can beat out Quinn Ewers for QB1 at Texas.
