2021 FCS Spring Final Four

I think the FCS should always play in Spring, football for when there is no football.

Delaware (2003) and James Madison (2004, 2016) have won FCS titles. North Dakota State won 8 of the last 9 but they were eliminated by Sam Houston in the quarterfinals. Neither Sam Houston nor South Dakota State have won an FCS title.

JMU finished the season ranked #1 but SDSU got the 1-seed, so I'm hoping they settle it in the championship game. Both are favored this Saturday, but JMU will have to win on the road. They've done it before, beating North Dakota State on the road in the 2016 semis then beating Youngstown State in the championship game - Bo Pelini's finest hour at YSU.

TWICE AS NICE! DANCE TEAM WINS DOUBLE NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP

The Ohio State dance team competed over the last two days at the UDA College National Championships in Orlando, Fla. and the Buckeyes and making the trip home to Columbus with some well-earned hardware.

Ohio State won a double national championship, claiming crowns in both the Division IA Jazz and Pom divisions. The wins came after performances in the finals on Wednesday afternoon and evening.

“This season was unlike any other and I am most proud of the resilience the team showed through an extended season,” said head coach Melissa McGhee. “They did not let circumstances beyond their control define them and pushed through with passion and determination to produce two amazing routines! This was a total program effort – our choreographers and consultants, support staff, administration, parents and alumni all contributed to this year’s success!”

The Buckeyes’ title in the pom division came of the strength of a 96.42 score in the finals, which was nearly two points better than runner-up Minnesota. Ohio State scored a 96.1833 in the semifinals, which was also the event’s top score.

In jazz, Ohio State once again topped Minnesota in both the semifinals and finals. The Buckeyes’ score in the finals was 96.35 after a 95.75 showing the semifinals.

“This team’s journey was far from an easy one, but that’s what makes this moment so rewarding,” said senior Maddie Smith. “In a year where practices, events and even nationals were not promised, this team found an internal drive and motivation to maximize our potential this season. Winning two nationals championships is the icing on the cake to an already fulfilling UDA Nationals. I am so proud of this team and their determination to accomplish our lofty goals.”

This year’s double title extends a championship run for the program that began in 2018 when it won both the D1A Jazz and D1A Pom divisions. The program has now won a total of six national championships. And this year’s group of seniors have been particularly accomplished: they won both jazz and pom titles in 2018, just a pom title in 2019, just jazz in 2020 and both again in 2021. The senior group consists of Maddie Smith, Kendall Kropp and Mia Snaidauf.

“I am so proud of what the team has accomplished to get to this moment,” said Kropp, an exercise science education major. “Even though this year looked different and we had many obstacles to overcome, we stayed locked in as a team every step of the way. These two titles represent the love, dedication, and hard work we put into the season.”

1936 Jesse Owens Item at Auction

Just posting as an FYI, there's a really cool Jesse Owens related items currently available at auction. It's a bound New York Times from August 1-15, 1936. It has photos and coverage of the opening of the 1936 Olympics and all 4 of Jesse's gold medals in front of Hilter and Nazi Germany. Here's the link:

There are also pictures of the Hindenburg, Joe Louis, FDR, etc, but Jesse and the Olympics are the highlight. Thought you would want to know. Good luck!

2021 Fall Camp and Other Tidbits

There could be some changes this year:

Sources: Significant Changes Coming to Fall Camps After February Concussion Study

Change is coming to college football, and this time, the modifications are on the field.

While the last several weeks have been spent on transfer legislation and athlete compensation changes, college sports leaders are poised to make an adjustment between the lines: Preseason camp is getting a facelift.

In response to results from a five-year concussion study released earlier this spring, an NCAA legislative committee is deeply exploring ways to make the annual August camp a safer place, officials told Sports Illustrated in interviews this week. The Football Oversight Committee (FOC), college football’s highest policy-making group, plans to present recommendations soon that will significantly change one of football’s most grueling traditions.

Committee members are considering a reduction of full-padded camp practices (from 21 to eight), the complete abolishment of collision exercises (such as the “Oklahoma” drill) and limiting a team to two scrimmages per camp (lowered from three and a half).

The changes stem from a study published in February that was funded by the NCAA and Department of Defense. The study tracked head exposures in six Division I college football teams from 2015 to '19, finding that 72% of concussions occurred during practice and nearly 50% happened in preseason practice, despite it representing just one-fifth of the football season. Total head impacts in the preseason occurred at twice the rate of the regular season. More than 650 players from Virginia Tech, North Carolina, Wisconsin, UCLA, Air Force and Army were involved in the study.

The study leaves college administrators with no choice but to again adjust college football’s preseason camp policies, says Shane Lyons, the West Virginia athletic director and the chair of the FOC.

DB recruiting failures as seen in 2020

Not specifically disagreeing with your point but I do think it’s worth considering that the other elite schools missed out as well. Do they have as much of a “relationship” as tOSU? Maybe and maybe not.

The point is, perhaps it should be acknowledged that Goodwin might have simply made the pick he wanted and has less to do with Stud “blowing it”.

Back to my point that once is a coincidence, twice is a trend. Stud has swung and missed on at least 4 (Pending a Goodwin flip) in the past 3 recruiting cycles. I don't mean to keep beating it to death but rationalizing it away on a case by case basis is disingenuous imo. OSU football is the ultimate accountability driven outfit and you have to wonder out loud about OT recruiting no matter how good interior OL recruiting is or how much depth we have this year.

We all saw what happened with one bad year of recruiting DB's in the form of the 2020 secondary.
