Cleveland Guardians (2022 AL Central Champs)

Member when they claimed that trading Lindor and Carrassco was going to allow them more flexibility for spending to build the team?

Lets watch another trash bin dive free agency this offseason.

40-Man Roster Day is approaching and it'll be interesting to see who they protect. They have a bazillion intriguing prospects eligible to be taken. They have 4 open spots right now and certainly not all of the current roster players will survive Friday's deadline.

Konnor Pilkington, Tyler Freeman, Richie Palacios, Brayan Rocchio, Jose Tena, Oscar Gonzalez, and George Valera

There's easily enough dead weight to cut to add all of these guys. Freeman, Rocchio, and Valera are locks, but I'd think the other 5 would sting if they lost them for nothing. Maybe not Gonzalez, but being a minor league free agent, I tend to think there's something in his contract that guarantees him added to the 40. He can't be any worse than the guys the trotted out there on the corners this past season.

I remember visiting "the Jake" a few times when I was younger. Great stadium and atmosphere. I haven't been there in years, and have no clue what they atmosphere/scene is like now.
The atmosphere there was unrivaled from about 1994-2001. From 2002 on, it's not nearly what it was. There are times when it has still been quite enthusiastic, late in the year during playoff runs, but they mostly struggle to draw 20K a game nowadays. Fan support has become very tepid as the fanbase grows more and more weary of being a glorified "farm team" for the bigger markets. I was as diehard an Indians fan as you could find for most of my life, but the last few years I've just not been as invested.

Having your heart ripped out multiple times and watching your best players either traded or lost in free agency takes a toll. I honestly barely paid attention the past two seasons.

I think the ticket prices have been a big reason for the lack of support/stadium atmosphere. Back in 2016, pricing was still reasonable and on select weekday games, you could get decent seats for cheap. Certainly that has to do with them coming off of a so-so year and not being thought of as a true playoff contender, let alone a World Series team. I paid ~$25 after fees for 2 tickets in RF (section 113). That's not even getting you 1 ticket now. I totally understand that prices will increase after a World Series run, but prices haven't stopped rising. They also appear to not be even offering certain sections on the third level. To me if comes off as, "No cheap seats for you. If you want to come to a game, you have to buy the more expensive seats." I still try to go to a few games each year when a catch a good deal, but I don't understand why they aren't trying to make pricing reasonable and getting the stadium packed.

Prices don't help. COVID has effected almost every team, as well. But, even if tickets are cheap, baseball will always take a backseat to football in Cleveland. Hell, I'd argue the Cavs are a bigger draw, too. It's no coincidence the best days were during the period the Clowns were not there. Also, when support started to swell, you had multiple other factors aiding it...

  • New stadium
  • Exciting young team with an incredible lineup of homegrown talent
  • Winning A LOT
  • At that point, our roster wasn't being raided as our best players developed into stars and superstars
  • Cleveland was starved for a successful baseball team after 4 decades of abject futility
The bitterness started with Manny leaving in 2001. They traded Bartolo in 2002. Thome left in FA prior to 2003. They then rebuilt another strong roster by the mid-late 2000s which gave us a couple of fun years before those guys started leaving. C.C. traded in 2008. Victor and Cliff Lee in 2009. That's a second round of watching your best players leave because we can't afford them. Then you develop another strong team with a fun, loveable star in Frankie and he gets traded last year. Brantley left after 2018. I'm sure Jose Ramirez will be gone before too much longer. It's a never-ending cycle of having these really great players grow up on our teams and then being either traded or leaving in FA because Cleveland just cannot compete with the big markets.

I have full confidence another round of stars will come up because one thing the Tribe has done very well is scouting and developing. But, how do you personally invest in these guys anymore when you know they're just gonna leave you? I, for one, can't do it anymore and it sucks because I used to live and die with the Tribe.

That's a shame. It was sometime during the late 90's/early 2000's when I went to a few games. If I'm not mistaken, wasn't there was some sort of sell-out or attendance record during that period of 94-01?
