Welcome to your tri-weekly look at all things Ohio State recruiting. Let’s get started!

Another Texas Star Sets Decision Date:

Dreams to reality….Committing on November 29th.

— ᴬᴺᵀᴴᴼᴺᵞ ᴴᴵᴺᴱˢ ᴵᴵᴵ® (@TheAntHines_Era) August 28, 2016

The Buckeyes could be in for some really good news on November 29th, or maybe the state of Texas could be in for the good news. We said earlier this week that 5-star linebacker Baron Browning has set his decision date for November 29th and now 4-star linebacker Anthony Hines has set his decision date for the same day. There isn’t a lot of optimism in Hines becoming a Buckeye although he had a 3-day visit back in June and had nothing but good things to say about the Buckeye program. Right now the consensus is that Hines is either headed to Oklahoma or Texas with an outside shot at Baylor. He has only one official visit set right now and that is to Auburn this weekend when the Tigers face the Clemson Tigers.

The crystal ball report has Oklahoma at 65% followed by Texas at 24% and Baylor at 12%.

#1 OLB Has Visit’s Set, LSU Still in the Lead

Dylan Moses out of IMG Academy has LSU out on top right now, but his last official visit that he has scheduled is to Ohio State November 26th when the Buckeyes face off against the Wolverines in what could be a winner take all Big Ten matchup. The Buckeyes have a lot of ground to make up between now and then.

LSU was named his leader, however an official visit has not been set up to see the Tigers as he has probably seen all he needs from them so visiting other schools will tell him where he stands. His officials are:

Alabama – October 1st

Miami (FL) – October 7th

Texas – October 15th

UCLA – November 19th

Ohio State – November 26th

LSU holds his crystal ball lead with 89% of the 35 predictions with Alabama second at 9%.

Defensive Tackle to Release Top 5:

South Jordan, Utah’s Jay Tufele will be dropping his top 5 soon, and the Buckeyes are expected the make the list. Tufele is the top player in Utah and currently holds 21 offers to date.

Tufele has not suited up yet this season due to ligament damage in his foot, but he is expected the play again this season. Right now the crystal ball predictions are split between Ohio State and Oregon but I expect home town Utah and Michigan to make pushes for his services.

Buckeye Commit out for a few more weeks:

Tyjon Lindsey, one of the top wide receivers in the nation will continued to be sidelined by a broken collarbone that he suffered in a scrimmage two weeks ago. It sounds like it will be at least six weeks before he is able to suit up, and it just so happens that the game that takes place when he would be likely to return is against St. Thomas Aquinas and fellow commitment Trevon Grimes. The two made a commitment video in which they both pledged to Ohio State, and it will be fun to see them face off against each other if in fact Lindsey is able to bounce back from this injury.

Buckeyes Flip to Bama?

It has long been rumored that Shaun Wade would eventually leave the Ohio State recruiting class of 2017 and flip his commitment to Alabama. While that hasn’t happened yet and he remains “100% committed”, another current Buckeye commitment is being heavily pursued by the Crimson Tide as well. Safety Isaiah Pryor spoke to SEC Country last week and told him that Alabama has been pushing him to visit, but it looks like that probably will not happen.

5-star LB says #Alabama is recruiting him the hardest, #OSU commit not likely to flip | https://t.co/2Av8KVZETM pic.twitter.com/BAZJNqlkb4

— Chris Kirschner (@ChrisK_AJC) August 29, 2016

“I think [Alabama has] done a very good job, but I’m just set on Ohio State,” Pryor said. “It was one of my first offers. I go up there a lot and have family up there. I have a great relationship with the coaches and I just love it up there.

While it looks like Pryor is safe to stay in this class, the case of Shaun Wade will still be interesting to watch.

JB2-150x150.jpg

The San Diego Chargers finally ended the month-long holdout with first round draft choice (3rd overall) former Buckeye, Joey Bosa.

The news was announced Monday – August 30 – at the Chargers Training facilities, Chargers Park, in San Diego. The announcement follows five days where both sides pointed fingers at one another, accusing the other of “games.” The primary issue appeared to be Bosa’s $17 million dollar signing bonus and whether the contract would have offset language. The announcement ironically also follows a defensive-horror-show in a preseason matchup against the Vikings who won 23-10.

“I’m happy to be here and there is no animosity between us,” Bosa said. “It’s just a matter of business and I’m happy to have it out of the way. I am very relieved. I knew this was going to get done. I was surprised how long it took. Of course I would have loved to have been out there with my teammates but the NFL is a business.”

“We just wanted what was fair and what people in that position got the last four or five years.” Bosa added.

Coach Mike McCoy would say later that he had heard of Bosa’s agreeing to terms prior to Sunday’s loss to Minnesota. “I had to keep it to myself!”

”He’s here to help us win and I told the team he’s here to help us win,” McCoy said. ”Regardless of when he got here, let’s go.”

There was a threat on the table recently from the Chargers to reduce any offer to Bosa under the guess that he wouldn’t be ready to play a full season. Bosa, number three overall in the past NFL draft is the last rookie to sign. Brian Ayrault, Bosa’s representative, announced only five days ago that all of the statements being put by the Chargers were manipulated facts and that going public would not strengthen the team’s relationship with Bosa.

Whatever transpired between that moment and now is left to speculation. The deal is done. Bosa is now back on the field and ready to help the Chargers win. Bosa has said he would be ready for the September 11th opener against the KC Chiefs.

Bosa also spoked in reference to his mother’s intake publically in this long dispute. Earlier in August, Cheryl Bosa posted a remark toward the Chargers on Facebook. In a reply to someone frustrated by the stalemate, she wrote: ”It bums me out for him so much. Wish we pulled an Eli Manning on draft day.” This past Thursday Cheryl Bosa retweeted an article critical of the Chargers and added the comment, ”The Chargers were petty and terrible even before they tried to stiff Joey Bosa.”

Joey on Monday said: ”What do you expect a mom to do? ‘She loves me, she wants what’s best for me and she made a dumb decision, like I have before, saying something she shouldn’t have said on social media. She honestly had no idea it was public, she thought, because she was sending it to somebody else. Leave it to a mom to mess up on Facebook.”

In Bosa’s 31 day absence from training camp, he and his representatives said he participated in a rigorous workout schedule – saying he is not soft, and is ready.

With that all said and done Buckeye Nation now will have the joy of witnessing a rising star coming from the West.

LGHL 2018 QB gains interest with Ohio State

Buckeyes pushes forward for 2017, shows interest in 2018 QB

With the 2016 season just a few days away, the Ohio State coaching staff is working double duty to put a championship team onto the field as well as putting together elite classes on the recruiting trail. With Tyjon Lindsey and Trevon Grimes jumping into the class last week, Ohio State sits at 18 commits and the No.1 class in the country. Though there aren't a ton of spots left for 2017, expected attrition is expected to happen over the next several months as Ohio State will inevitably see kids transfer and declare early for the NFL draft. Months ago, it seemed as if the 2017 class would sit right under 20, but now it's looking like the Buckeyes could end up bringing in close to 25.

Urban Meyer and his staff won't reach for any prospects down the line, they can't afford to, but Ohio State is in on some of the top players in the country that they will chase all the way to the end.

Bucks showing interest in 2018 QB

Dealing with the 2018 class is different, though. Though the Buckeyes have an upper leg on many top prospects, few have pulled the trigger and committed. There are reports that Ohio State is showing interest in quarterback Jarren Williams (Lawrenceville, GA / Central Gwinnett)

— Trent Smallwood (@SmallwoodTrent) April 29, 2016

Williams holds 10 total offers, but that list does not include Ohio State. With Emory Jones already committed for the very same class, it's unclear how legit the interest is on both sides. Ohio State has loaded up their quarterback room for years to come and with a top 2018 QB already committed, it's likely the Buckeyes just land one at that position in next year's cycle. Williams stands at 6-foot-3 and is rated the No.17 dual-threat QB in the country.

If Ohio State does make an offer to the Peach State native, here is a sample of what the Buckeyes could be getting.

As it stands, Williams is penciled in as a hard commit to the University of Kentucky, according to 247sports. However, there is a lot of time between now and National Signing Day 2018. The schools that have offered Williams include Florida State, Houston, Maryland, Boston College, Louisville and West Virginia.

If anything changes, we’ll have you covered here on Land-Grant Holy Land.

2016 tOSU Wide Receiver Discussion

I don't think tha the provides anything that Torrance does not. Victor is also ultra thin. I love Victor's potential but I wouldn't bet on him making a big impact this year.

Muscle mass and durability would be my only concern but if he plays somewhat sparingly, that might not be an issue. And with TV now out, he might really have an opportunity to contribute.

Even with a young team in Columbus, expectations remain high as ever.

“In Las Vegas, the Buckeyes — the youngest, most inexperienced team in the nation — have the second-best odds of winning the national title.”

- David Briggs, The Blade

Not a season goes by without Ohio State being in the mix as a potential contender for the national championship, or that how it feels, anyway. And that sense of confidence rests in the teams that Urban Meyer has coached since he came to Columbus. So it comes as no surprise that the Buckeyes feel that they can end up being in the conversation for another appearance in the College Football Playoff in 2016 despite losing a bevy of starters from last season.

Still, even with the inexperience across the board, Ohio State has the second-best odds of winning the national championship according to Vegas. That speaks volumes to the job Meyer has done both in recruiting the talent and also developing that talent into legitimate top-level players. He’ll have his work cut out for him early and an early season test against Oklahoma in Norman could prove to be a nice measuring stick for where this group of Buckeyes currently stands in the grand scheme of the college football landscape.

“You know, Coach (Urban) Meyer, he was on me everyday. Especially when I changed my position he was kinda upset about it when I told him I wanted to play receiver. He was on me everyday to watch film and any mistake, he was on it. It is all about learning from the best.”

- Braxton Miller via Patrick Starr, Scout.com

Braxton Miller was an electrifying playmaker during his time at Ohio State and is now on his way to doing the same thing in Houston for the Texans. Miller has the talent to succeed in the NFL and is thanking Urban Meyer for pushing him to be greater at all times last season. Miller also spoke highly of Texans star wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins who Miller has been closely watching during the preseason and taking every bit of advice he can get. With the preseason coming to an end, Miller seems penciled in to be the starting slot receiver for the Texans come Week 1.

Some may have questioned Miller’s ability to grasp a brand new position quickly after playing quarterback both in high school and at Ohio State for three seasons. At one point a Heisman-contending quarterback, two shoulder surgeries essentially forced Miller to change his position with the Buckeyes and he stepped in immediately and made an impact. Now he gets a chance to improve further in the NFL and it seems like Houston may have been a nearly perfect spot for him.

“[Big Ten fearless predictions] Sam Hubbard will lead the nation in sacks”

- Austin Ward via Brian Bennett, ESPN

The Big Ten writers for ESPN gave their fearless predictions for the upcoming season, and Austin Ward predicts that Ohio State defensive end Sam Hubbard will lead the country in sacks. Hubbard is entering his redshirt sophomore season after playing backup to Joey Bosa in 2015. Hubbard filled his role in terrific fashion, playing when Bosa was both suspended at the start of the year and when he was ejected in the Fiesta Bowl against Notre Dame. He proved what he’s capable of when put into the game, and now will get to solidify that in 2016.

Playing behind Bosa only allowed Hubbard to improve his game and it showed a lot of the times that Hubbard could be just as disruptive on the defensive line. Now with fellow defensive end Tyquan Lewis on the other end, Hubbard is likely looking forward to a season in which he’s the starter. And though Jayln Holmes is listed on the depth chart with Hubbard, expect the sophomore to shine early on in the season.

The OSU video team is still at the peak of their powers.

Are you ready for some football?

It’s been what feels like an eternity since Urban Meyer’s Ohio State Buckeyes last took the field.

After summarily beating Notre Dame, OSU spent the entire offseason re—well we know they don’t rebuild, but let’s say retooling to put themselves in position to play for it all again in 2016.

Despite zero senior starters on defense and 31 underclassmen in the two-deep, the games don’t stop.

With early season challenges, including the big one on the road against a team favored to make the playoff, the Oklahoma Sooners, 2016 shouldn’t be anything if not exciting.

If after watching the above hype video you aren’t gearing up and ready to suit up with a helmet on, you may want to reevaluate things and/or see a doctor.

Last year, the Wildcats were more lucky than good. What about this season?

The Ohio State football season will be here before you know it, and even if you’ve only been paying semi-close attention this offseason, you’re probably aware of the major storylines with the program. This is going to be an exceptionally young, but talented and athletic team. There’s a lack of proven production at wideout, running back, and defensive back. They return the best QB in the conference, and should at least compete for a Big Ten title.

But you may not know a lot about the specific teams on Ohio State’s schedule. We’ll get into a lot more detail before the actual games, but you may want a primer so you can sound smart at the bar, or at the barbecue, or in the grocery store checkout line.

So take a look at Ohio State’s opponents this year. Next up, a battle with the Northwestern Wildcats.

What was the deal with Northwestern last year?

BODY CLOCKS BODY BLOCK BODY CLOCKKKKKKKKKKSSSSS

The most interesting thing that happened to Northwestern was their devious invention of body clocks, the justification used to explain why Stanford could have played so poorly in Northwestern’s unlikely Week 1 upset. Northwestern spent the rest of the season winning close games against mostly uninspired opposition, and then getting blasted by the quality teams on their schedule. When the dust settled, Northwestern had an impressive looking 10-3 record, even though they didn’t even crack the top 50 of the S&P+. Mentioning this is a good way of making Northwestern fans mad on the internet.

How’s Northwestern going to look on offense?

Probably at least a little better than they looked last year, but that is hardly high praise. The Wildcats finished a horrible 113th in offensive S&P+ last season, thanks to inexperience at skill positions, bad quarterback play, and a revolving door of offensive linemen.

If you’re an optimistic sort, you’d note that almost everybody of consequence is back. Clayton Thorson, a former blue-chip recruit, is back for his sophomore season at quarterback. Justin Jackson, another blue-chipper, is back at running back, and should be one of the very best in the conference. Six linemen with starting experience are coming back. There are some pieces there.

But Thorson was also awful last season, and even if he takes a big step up, that might just be a step towards being average. The pass-catching options are thin, and depth all along the offense isn’t great. If Northwestern is unlucky with the injury bug again, this unit could struggle mightily. And even if they stay healthy, it’s hard to see this being a legitimately good group, outside of Jackson’s heroics. If anything happens to him ... woof.

Okay, but what about the defense?

That’s better! Actually, that’s selling it short. It was really damn good (11th overall in S&P+), thanks to exceptional secondary play and huge steps forward up front. Anthony Walker at linebacker is the name you’ll want to know here, as he morphed into a complete tackling machine that will challenge for end of year hardware as one of the best linebackers in the Big Ten, if not beyond.

Northwestern’s pass rush may take a step back (their top two defensive ends are gone), but Ifeadi Odenigbo returns, and he can certainly get after a quarterback. Godwin Igwebuike headlines a solid group in the defensive backfield, a unit that returns some contributors from last year, but may lack in depth a little bit.

What’s the Ohio State-Northwestern series like?

Nothing but pain for our purple-clad friends in Evanston. Historically, Ohio State holds a massive 60-14-1 edge, a trend that has continued in recent memory. I was born in 1987. Northwestern has beaten Ohio State exactly once in my lifetime. In fact, they’ve only won once since 1972.

Sometimes those games are close, like Ohio State 40-30 win in 2013, but most of the the time, they haven’t been, even when Northwestern has been decent.

Is Northwestern going to be any good this season?

Feel pretty good about stepping out on this ledge: Northwestern isn’t winning 10 games again in 2016. Their schedule is tough, with road trips to Ohio State and Michigan State, and a season opening game against a solid Western Michigan team (not to mention a rematch with Duke on the road). Their defense is highly unlikely to replicate their performance last season, and their offense, while likely to improve, still hinges on the significant improvement of an underclassman who was very, very bad last year.

I think they’re probably still a bowl team. But this should not be a team that seriously challenges Ohio State unless the Buckeyes give them lots of opportunities.

So, not really feeling an upset here, huh?

There’s always a risk that this paragraph will come back to haunt me. But as a fan, I am not very concerned about this game unless Ohio State is nursing some serious injury problems. Northwestern is highly unlikely to score enough points to win, especially at Ohio State, after the Buckeyes finished an emotionally exhausting road trip. It would take a lot of luck, a lot of Buckeye miscues, and flawless defensive execution for the Wildcats to spring a rare Buckeye upset. I don’t see it happening this season.
