Tyjon Lindsey will announce his verbal commitment in the coming weeks

Tyjon Lindsey sets commitment date

One of the most important Ohio State targets in the 2017 recruiting class will be announcing his verbal commitment in roughly three weeks. Tyjon Lindsey (Corona, CA / Centennial) announced Monday afternoon that he will be making his decision Aug. 22 via Bleacher Report.

Lindsey included a list of his final 10 schools in a tweet and Ohio State was included in the list. Urban Meyer is competing with the best of them for Lindsey as Alabama, Auburn, Georgia, Michigan, Nebraska, Notre Dame, Oregon, Tennessee and USC were also included on his list of finalists.

Ohio State has become highly active in recruiting Lindsey in the past year, and in doing so, has become the favorite for the top five WR. With 82% of 247Sports Crystal Ball predictions, the Buckeyes are the team to beat come the fourth week of the month.

Recent Buckeye quarterback commit Tate Martell (Las Vegas, NV / Bishop Gorman) and Lindsey were high school teammates in the beginning of their high school careers and the two have remained close in their years apart – and have hinted at reconnecting in college.

Martell isn't the only elite recruit in this class to be connected to Lindsey. Ohio State five-star WR target Trevon Grimes (Fort Lauderdale, FL / St. Thomas Aquinas) has also been rumored to be in talks of being a package deal with Lindsey. Grimes is currently a heavy Ohio State lean.

It is safe to say Urban Meyer and the Ohio State recruiting staff is working hard to build something special with this class.

Ohio State makes the cut for Four-star ATH

Markquese Bell (Bridgeton, NJ / Bridgeton) announced his list of his top seven schools Monday. Ohio State, who offered Bell back in June, listed the Buckeyes as one of his final schools, along with Michigan, Florida, Rutgers, Maryland, Clemson and Temple.

The 6-foot-3, 194-pound athlete will likely play receiver at the next level and the Buckeyes have shown they are more than interested in adding at least one more wideout to the 2017 class. The four-star Jersey native has seen his recruiting take off this summer as he holds offers from more nearly 20 different programs.

Rutgers is the current favorite to land Bell, but his official visits will surely play a role in his decision. Along with releasing a top seven schools, Bell also announced his official visit schedule, which includes a visit to The Shoe for The Game, when Michigan comes to Columbus.

Coincidentally, Michigan will now be the only school Bell gets to see in action twice, as he will also be attending a game in Ann Arbor when Michigan takes on Penn State. Because Bell plans to take all five of his allocated official visits this season, it is likely he will wait until National Signing Day to announce his decision.

Ohio State 5-star CB seems all in on Buckeyes

Longtime Buckeye CB commit, Shaun Wade (Jacksonville, FL / Trinity Christian Academy) was one of the first members of Ohio State's prestigious 2017 recruiting class. Despite confirming his commitment with the Buckeyes numerous times, Ohio State arch-rival, Michigan, was thought to still be in play.

The five-star commit made the most prominent statement in his pledge to the Buckeyes when he announced he will not be attending the Michigan's BBQ in the Big House recruiting event. This all but solidifies the No. 3 CB in the country will choose to play in the Scarlet and Grey come National Signing Day.

Ohio State sends out official scholarship offers

The Ohio State football program sent out official scholarship offers to the 2017 recruits, Monday. Multiple Buckeye commits and targets went to Twitter to show off what they earned. Below is a list of some of these recruits:

LGHL Urban Meyer is spending way more time on practice plans than usual

usa-today-9276227.0.0.jpg

With so many inexperienced players on scholarship, the Buckeyes have a lot to learn as they prepare for the 2016 season.

"I have never spent this much time on practice schedules. I stare at the board for two hours a day. Every practice I’ve probably gone over five, six, seven times to make sure we’re getting everything."

-Urban Meyer, via Doug Lesmerises, Cleveland.com

Ohio State’s training camp heading into 2016 could not be more different than that of 2015. With so little experience on both sides of the ball, and so few returning starters, Urban Meyer and his position coaches have the tall task of not only selecting starters at each position, but also of ensuring that they are adequately prepared for the season ahead.

Last year, with the likes of Joey Bosa, Ezekiel Elliott and Darron Lee returning, Meyer’s emphasis in camp was simply to "stay healthy." He was able to focus on problem areas, since the majority of players came in with a thorough knowledge of what they were supposed to be doing in most situations.

Now, however, 46 of 85 scholarship players on the Buckeyes’ roster have never seen the field for Ohio State -- and they will need to be able to be as comfortable in all of the same situations as their predecessors. Practices, then, have become even more critical for Meyer, who has worked tirelessly to ensure that the players are able to get their needed reps in for each contingency. He has prioritized the situations the team is likely to see early in the year -- such as defending against the spread in the Buckeyes’ opener versus Bowling Green -- while delaying some of those less likely to be encountered until later, like power run defense.

To complicate matters, Meyer and his assistants have yet to name many of the 2016 starters, leading Meyer to set a "line of demarcation" to determine who the new starters will be. While the onus lies with the position coaches, who have the most knowledge of individuals in their position groups, Meyer will have final say in each position battle.

"How good do you want to be? Do you want to be OK, or do you want to be great? It’s not like you do what’s required of you. You have to do the extra. It’s been good so far."

-Ohio State quarterback J.T. Barrett, via Bill Rabinowitz, the Columbus Dispatch

Despite high turnover from last season -- having lost a dozen starters on both sides of the ball -- the Ohio State Buckeyes understand just how important their time has been leading up to the start of training camp next week. Strength training behind coach Mickey Marotti has been of particular importance since the team broke from spring practice in April, especially given that less than half of the current scholarship players have ever seen playing time at Ohio State.

Mitchell has been emphasizing the importance of being accountable and continuing to work through the offseason. Quarterback and captain J.T. Barrett echoed this sentiment at Big Ten media days last week, adding that accountability breeds trust on the young team: "If you’re a minute late to a workout, can I trust you to make sure if we’re running a certain pass play to run the right route?"

In Barrett’s mind, though, there is still room for improvement for the squad as they continue to progress towards the 2016 season, but that critical leadership is "spread thin" with so few seniors on the roster. Only center Pat Elflein and punter Cameron Johnston are returning senior starters. While there were a significant number of leaders among all position groups last year, Barrett has extended himself beyond his own position group in preparation for this season, working with all the offensive skill positions, while linebacker Raekwon McMillan has taken over the detense. Still, with so few returners, younger players are getting more reps, and have the opportunity to make an impact heading into the season. True freshman guard Michael Jordan, for example, could wind up starting come September.

"Nov. 26 is the most popular date for in-demand matchups, with that Saturday boasting 5 games in the top 25."

-Fandemonium, VividSeats.com

With a median ticket price of $196 per home game, the Ohio State Buckeyes are the second-most expensive team to watch live for the 2016 season after Notre Dame. And the hottest ticket -- versus Michigan Nov. 26 in Columbus -- is the third-most expensive individual game to watch in the country as determined by median ticket price, with a value of $489. Though not factored into the team’s value, the Buckeyes’ road matchup against Oklahoma has a median ticket price of $493, making it the second-most expensive ticket for the 2016 season behind the Iron Bowl between Auburn and Alabama ($524 median price).

Last year, Ohio State’s matchup against Michigan was just the 16th-most expensive ticket, despite it being Jim Harbaugh’s first year at the helm for Michigan, coming in at a median value of $292 per ticket. The Buckeyes’ games against Michigan State, Penn State and the season opener versus Virginia Tech all demanded higher prices than the rivalry game in Ann Arbor.

Here are the top ten most expensive games for 2016, as determined by median ticket price per home game:

  1. Auburn at Alabama ($524)
  2. Ohio State at Oklahoma ($493)
  3. Michigan at Ohio State ($489)
  4. Oklahoma vs. Texas ($441) *game taking place in Dallas
  5. LSU at Wisconsin ($399)
  6. Michigan State at Notre Dame ($395)
  7. Florida vs. Georgia ($369) *game held in Jacksonville
  8. Notre Dame at Texas ($368)
  9. Alabama at LSU ($355)
  10. (T) Oregon at Nebraska and Penn State at Pittsburgh ($325)

Dienhart: Best chance for each Big Ten team to pull an upset

Who doesn’t love an upset? The shock. The surprise. The unexpectedness. It’s what makes sports fun. Last year gave us Michigan State over Ohio State, Purdue over Nebraska and Northwestern over Stanford, to name a few upsets. What’s in store this season? Here is my “best chance to pull an upset” for each Big Ten team this fall. Illinois. If the offense comes together, the Fighting Illini may have a shot to shock Iowa when the Hawkeyes visit Memorial Stadium on Nov. 19. But how beat up will Illinois be coming off a game the week before at Wisconsin? The

Welcome to a new (hopefully) daily feature at The Buckeye Battle Cry called Heard Around the ‘Shoe. This daily dose will take a look at all things recruiting in regards to Ohio State football. Each day I will scour the internet looking for anything interesting pertaining to the Buckeyes recruiting efforts. So let’s get started shall we?

Updated Recruiting Rankings by Service:

Before we delve into the goings on with Ohio State recruiting lets take a real quick look at where things stand with the 2017 class.

ESPN – ESPN has the Buckeyes #1, Michigan #7, Iowa #16, Maryland #20, Rutgers #21, Northwestern #23, Michigan State #24

Scout – Scout has the Buckeyes #1, Michigan #7, Michigan State #14, Maryland #17, Penn State #21, Rutgers #22, Northwestern #23, Iowa #24

Rivals – Rivals has the Buckeyes #2, Michigan #5, Rutgers #16, Maryland #17, Iowa #19, Michigan State #20, Northwestern #23

247 – 247 has the Buckeyes #1, Michigan #7, Maryland #16, Iowa #18, Rutgers #21, Penn State #23, Michigan State #24

The Big Ten is holding its own in most of these recruiting services placing as many as 7 teams in the top 25 of the recruiting rankings. Last year the SEC dominated the recruiting rankings, and this year the Big Ten seems to be stepping up its game. The addition of Chris Ash at Rutgers and DJ Durkin at Maryland have sure shown some early dividends, as both schools find themselves among the surprise teams in the top 25. The Buckeyes will look to continue their stronghold on their top spot with the hopeful additions of a couple of elite wide receivers at the end of the month.

Early Buckeye Targets on ESPN 300:

Last week ESPN released their top 300 prospects in the class of 2018, and the Buckeyes have quite a few targets on this list. In-state guys like Jackson Carman (#7), Jaelen Gill (#34), current Michigan verbal Leonard Taylor (#45), L’Christian Smith (#102), Alex Reigelsperger (#156), Dallas Gant (#173), another Michigan verbal in Antwuan Johnson (#204), Malik Vann (#214), Blaine Scott (#225), Michael Dowell (#231), Trenton Gillison (#236), Christopher Oats (#252), Daniel Bolden (#265), and Joseph Scales (#297). Not all of these guys have offers yet, but I would imagine that the majority will receive one as the 2017 recruiting class wraps up.

Other Buckeye Targets out-of-state:

#1 – Xavier Thomas – DE – Florence, SC

#4 – Jalen Hall – WR – Los Angeles, CA

#6 – Teradja Mitchell – Virginia Beach, VA

#9 – Zamir White – RB – Laurinburg, NC

#11 – Matthew Jones – DT – Brooklyn, NY

#13 – Taron Vincent – DT – Bradenton, FL

#21 – Jaiden Woodbey – DB – Bellflower, CA

#23 – Nick Petit-Frere – OT – Tampa, FL

#25 – Brian Hightower – WR – Bradenton, FL

These are just a few of the guys that the Buckeyes have given out offers to so far for the 2018 class, however there are many more out of state guys who have offers that reside inside the top 300 of the ESPN rankings. 2018 looks to be no different in how the Buckeyes will do in recruiting as they already have commitments from the #37 and #95 players in the ESPN rankings in Emory Jones and Brian Snead. Expect the Buckeyes to snag quite a few more of these top recruits from Ohio as well as across the nation.

Ohio State visitor over the weekend:

Ohio State hosted the number one prospect in the state of New Jersey over the weekend in Tyler Friday. Friday is a member of the Don Bosco Prep football team, and right now holds a 100% crystal ball projection albeit with only 1 projection to the Michigan Wolverines which have been recruiting New Jersey hard since Jim Harbaugh arrived. Friday seemed to enjoy his visit to Ohio State, as he took to twitter to show his appreciation for the visit.

Friday currently holds 11 offers, from Michigan, Alabama, Rutgers and Penn State among others. He is currently ranked as the 47th best prospect in the class of 2018, and the number five defensive tackle in the 247 rankings.

2019 Offer Out:

While the Buckeyes have been busy trying to finalize the 2017 class, and get a head start on the 2018 class, the 2019 class is already starting to receive offers as well. The latest to receive a Buckeye offer is Dominick Blaylock, a highly offered athlete from the state of Georgia. Blaylock already has 22 offers to his name as he enters his sophomore season at Walton HS in Marietta, Georgia. His offers are from perennial powers Alabama, Oklahoma, Florida, Florida State and Michigan among others.

While it is likely that this recruitment will take quite a long time, the Buckeyes have been doing a great job of recruiting the state of Georgia under Urban Meyer. They have signed stars like Raekwon McMillan, Joshua Norwood and Stephen Collier, and adding Emory Jones to the mix for the 2018 class. Expect the Buckeyes to try and make an early impression on what is sure to be one of Georgia’s top athletes for the class of 2019.

Some Non Ohio State News:

We all know that these high school kids like to have big announcements and pledge their allegiance to the college of their choice. Some do the hat dance, some make videos, others have more elaborate ways of telling America where they will be attending college, and some just like to sit in their high school gym and gather the media around and make a good old fashioned announcement. Todd Harris a top 100 player in the class of 2017 gathered the media, friends and family around to make what was supposed to be his college announcement. He baffled everyone in attendance.

My mind is blown. Todd Harris didn't put on any three hats. Put on a Plaquemine hat and revealed a Plaquemine jersey. He's committed to HS.

— Shea Dixon (@Sheadixon) July 31, 2016

So a recruit announced a commitment “date” – has media show up – announces his commitment..to his high school. Wow. https://t.co/VKJEt8NlzE

— Jeremy Birmingham (@Birm) July 31, 2016

What looked to be a commitment to LSU, Alabama or Ole Miss turned into a kid committing to his high school. These kids know that they hold all the cards when it comes to the recruiting game, and Todd Harris simply played the media into his little game. It will be interesting to see how he decides to formally announce where he is going to college when that time comes and if the media decide to give him the time of day when it happens.

Tyler Friday spent his weekend visiting the scarlet and gray

It's nearly here. Ohio State's 2016 football team reports to fall camp in under week as they prepare for their season opener on Sept. 3 against Bowling Green State University. While the 2016 Buckeyes have a few days left of "summer" to themselves, the staff was still hard at work playing host to a top ranked prospect over the weekend.

Friday checks out Ohio State

In today's world, Ohio State seems to be hosting a top ranked prospect nearly every day. This weekend was no different for the Ohio State football staff. Over the weekend, the top ranked prospect in New Jersey for the 2018 class, Tyler Friday (Ramsey, NJ / Don Bosco Prep ), made a stop in Columbus for a weekend unofficial visit to see what the Buckeyes have to offer.

Making it public via his Twitter, Tyler seemed to enjoy himself and came away very impressed with Ohio State.

Amazing visit to OSU this weekend special thanks to the @OhioStateFB family for having me #Gobuckeyes

— Big Smooth (@almighty_ty5) July 31, 2016

Getting to town on Friday and leaving yesterday, the Jersey product was able to check out the facilities and get an inside look to what the Buckeyes have going as one of college football's top programs.

As of right now, Tyler has an impressive list of eleven offers including schools such as Alabama, Maryland, Michigan, North Carolina and Ohio State amongst others. Ranked as the country's fifth best defensive tackle and the top overall prospect from New Jersey, Friday is listed as a composite 4-star prospect in the class of 2018 according to 247sports.

With nothing but time until a final decision is signed on, Ohio State looks to be a major player for his services.

2019 youngster receives OSU offer

Most of the new offers that Ohio State sends out are for the 2018 class. As the Buckeyes top ranked and historical 2017 class continues to impress and take shape, the 2018 class is next in line for recruiting attention. However, late this past week, a 2019 stud picked up his latest offer from the Buckeyes.

Dominick Blaylock (Marietta, GA / Walton) is the latest prospect to earn a Buckeye offer and he wasn't shy to show his gratitude to Ohio State.

NEW OFFER! 2019 ATH/WR @domblaylock (6' 0" 180) thankful @OhioStateFB offered! #OSU #Big10 https://t.co/69nA7jKw5v pic.twitter.com/BbBnwdw2V9

— Walton(GA)Recruiting (@WaltonRecruits) July 29, 2016

Only a sophomore to be, Blaylock already possess an incredible list of over twenty scholarship offers. With his latest coming from Ohio State, other schools to throw their hat into the ring include Alabama, Auburn, Clemson, Florida, Florida State, Georgia and many more.

Only having one season of high school football under his belt, Blaylock, a 6-foot, 180-pound athlete, has yet to receive a 247sports recruiting ranking – but when it is available, it will obviously be a top ranking in the state of Georgia as well as the country with his offer list.

The Marietta athlete has a long time before he signs on the dotted line, but look for Ohio State to do everything they can to impress another Peach State star.

OSU basketball makes final 11

Switching things to the hardwood, Ohio State basketball received positive news over the weekend as 5-star prospect Kris Wilkes (Indianapolis, IN / North Central) placed Ohio State in his list of final schools he will be considering before a final decision is made.

Thanks to @TiptonEdits_ for the edit ... pic.twitter.com/mBBgvtB0jI

— Kris Air Wilkes (@kadw31) July 31, 2016

The Indianapolis product is ranked as the fifth best small forward in the 2017 class and the second best overall prospect in the talent-rich state of Indiana. With just under twenty scholarship offers, Wilkes, a 6-foot-7, 190-pound star would make a huge impact on Thad Matta's recruiting class. There is no set date for Wilkes's decision, but the Buckeyes will be sure to throw their best full-court press at Kris hoping to land the elite 5-star.

The former Buckeye legend’s headed back to play basketball in Europe.

The dream of an Aaron Craft long term return to American professional basketball will have to wait once again.

Less than a year after returning to the D-League to finish last season with the Santa Cruz Warriors, the developmental affiliate of the Western Conference champion Golden State Warriors, Craft is returning to Europe, on a one-year deal in Italy. Craft will spend next season in Trento, Trentino playing for Serie A club Aquila Basket Trento.

The former D-League defender of the year spent most of last season with Szolnoki Olaj KK, a Hungarian League team. In his 10 league games, Craft averaged 4.3 points per game to go along with 3.3 assists and 1.6 steals per contest.

Though it’s hardly uncommon for Americans playing professionally abroad to leave due to culture shock or a variety of extra-basketball challenges, Craft spoke more to the club specifically being problematic rather than the difficulties of adjusting or otherwise.

“It was interesting. Basketball over there is a little different,” Craft told D-League Digest when he left Szolnoki Olaj last season to return stateside. “The way they like to play, things like that. So that was an adjustment. But, once you get used to it it’s not so bad. It just wasn’t a great situation for me. The team’s doing pretty well so just trying to make a decision that’s best for myself and hopefully this is it.”

Craft spent the past few months trying to catch the eyes of NBA scouts while playing for the Utah Jazz’s Summer League team. He averaged 6.4 points per game, 2.2 rebounds and 3 assists but elected to pursue guarantees in Europe than try to catch on with an NBA team’s expanded training camp roster.

Craft’s new coach Maurizio Buscaglia’s review of the Buckeye was glowing in a statement translated by Land-Grant Holy Land.

“Aaron Craft is a player of great strength, both offensively and defensively. This is a very aggressive point guard who will make us great in transition because he knows how to attack the iron, has a great dribble drive and shot and knows how to play upright while taking contract. He has considerable abilities to play the pick-and-roll, read the game and involve his teammates due to his remarkable skills as a facilitator. He's so perfect for the kind of team we have built, based on his great sharing offensively as well as what he brings defensively. With his mentality, his defensive quality and his energy, we believe he and [Argentinian guard] Toto Forray will form a great duo.”
