Maryland has two exciting underclassmen who have excelled at running back.

Maryland is in transition from the Randy Edsall era to new coach — and former Michigan defensive coordinator — DJ Durkin. Durkin is a great recruiter who has had success in that area when he was an assistant at Florida and at Michigan. Since he was hired on December 2, 2015, he had limited time to gather together a class, but he did grab a couple of 4-stars and he found a 3-star diamond in the rough with running back Lorenzo Harrison III. The team is struggling in Big Ten play right now, but they have had 15 freshman play this season and the 14th ranked class is coming in for next season. The future is bright for Maryland.

Harrison and sophomore running back Ty Johnson lead the Terps in rushing, averaging about 8-yards a pop. Johnson has only one game with double-digit carries and out of his 69 total carries, he’s racked up 635 yards on the season. Harrison has seen three games with double-digit carries and has already accumulated 633 yards on only 88 carries. The two youngsters got their chance when Trey Edmunds went down with a fractured foot, and they’ve both given the offense a spark.

Harrison is Maryland’s version of Mike Weber, with 17, 14 and nine carries in his prior three games. He stands at only 5’8” and possesses a thick frame. Like Weber, most would expect him to be a pure power back, but he shows quickness in the hole and has the ability to make guys miss.

“Just by stature. He’s very thick. He’s very compact. He’s got great, explosive movement and short-area quickness. He’s been blessed with a lot of talent,” Durkin said. “He’s a competitor. He plays at a high level, and he’s a guy that we point out for effort many, many times. When you get a guy with that type of ability, that plays relentless type of effort, than he is something special.”

Here’s a 26-yard run against the Nittany Lions that showed off his blend of attributes. He was able to find the hole, make the linebacker miss, out run three other defenders and keep his balance after breaking another tackle, before being corralled.

— Ty Wurth (@WurthDraft) October 10, 2016

Harrison isn’t a burner, but has gained 20-plus yards eight times and 10-plus yards 20 times. He went over the century mark against Michigan State and has averaged over 5-yards per carry in every game this season. Harrison is already running like a veteran and it’s easy to forget that he’s only a true freshman.

While Harrison is the Mike Weber of Maryland, lightly-recruited sophomore Ty Johnson is the Terps’ Curtis Samuel. Johnson is a big play waiting to happen, averaging 9.20 yards per carry on only 69 carries.

On those 69 carries, Johnson gained 20-plus yards eight times and 10-plus yards 18 times. Just like Samuel, Johnson needs the ball more. Against Purdue, he racked up 204 yards and 2 touchdowns on only seven carries. In a victory against Michigan State, he rushed for 115 yards on nine carries, and against Indiana, Johnson ran for 142 yards and a touchdown on 13 carries. Plain and simple, Johnson is a home run hitter who makes plays with the football in his hands.

This play below is spectacular. Johnson takes the speed option, splits two defenders, freezes the safety and scampers to the end zone. He is lightning quick and is a very elusive back.

Even though the Buckeyes have somewhat struggled against the run in the past five weeks, like Michigan, they should be able to get up early so Maryland would have to abandon the running game. Three of the last four games, they have allowed 120-plus rushing yards to opponents, including 148 to Northwestern and 236 to Wisconsin. If Maryland can somehow limit the Buckeye offense, they could attempt to emulate the Northwestern game plan of controlling clock and converting on third down. Northwestern ran 73 plays against the Buckeyes, which is one less than the 74 that Wisconsin ran against them -- the season high.

Maryland should not be competitive for all four quarters, but Durkin has two young running backs who should make a name for themselves on Saturday.

Another star recruit will be coming to Columbus for the Michigan game.

Buckeye official visit set for Tufele

Switching gears to the gridiron, one of the biggest remaining targets for Ohio State amongst the defensive line is '17 defensive tackle Jay Tufele from Bingham (UT).

On Wednesday, Tufele took to Twitter that he will be making an official visit to Ohio State when the Buckeyes square off against their arch rival Michigan Wolverines. As of now, this will be Tufele's second official visit with the first being to Ann Arbor to check out the Michigan campus.

Its official I will be taking my 2nd official visit too Ohio state university for the Michigan game! #GoBucks pic.twitter.com/orbaMdBgLj

— Jay Tufele (@tufele123) November 9, 2016

Tufele is currently graded out as a four-star prospect. The Utah standout is also graded out as the 58th overall player in the class, the third best defensive tackle, and the No. 1 player from his state. As things stand at this moment, Ohio State has 40 percent of the predictions for Tufele on the 247Sports Crystal Ball. The Ducks of Oregon also have tallied 40 percent while the Wolverines have made their way into the picture with 20 percent of the casts.

Beverly inks with Ohio State

Wednesday was National Signing Day for 2017 basketball prospects and Ohio State came into the day with two verbal commits in the class. For the Buckeyes, they were quickly on the receiving end of a signature and NLOI from their three-star PG Braxton Beverly from Hargrave Military Academy.

Beverly is a 5-foot-11, 170-pounder who ultimately chose Ohio State over offers from Ball State, Belmont, Cleveland State, Lehigh, Miami (OH), Northern Kentucky, George Washington, Samford and Tennessee Tech. While that offer list may not be the most inspiring, Beverly was also being looked at by programs like Alabama, Butler, Dayton, Minnesota, Tennessee, Texas, Vanderbilt, Virginia, West Virginia, Wichita State and others.

As for the other Buckeye commit — '17 center Kaleb Wesson — Ohio State is expected to reel in his signed NLOI next week, according to Adam Jardy of the Columbus Dispatch. Jardy tweeted that Wesson will sign next Wednesday and that the hold on the signing doesn’t mean the four-star Center from Westerville South (OH) is considering other schools.

Hines recaps OSU visit

Another big time target for Ohio State comes at the linebacker position. '17 linebacker Anthony Hines, arguably one of the more important targets, was in Columbus this past weekend to watch the Buckeyes dismantle the Cornhuskers of Nebraska.

Hines, the nation’s No. 2 ILB, sat down with Scout.com's Greg Powers to discuss his final official visit to the Ohio State campus. The four-star Texan LB seemed to be very impressed with the atmosphere that Buckeye Nation delivered.

Really the biggest selling point was that the gameday environment was unreal," Hines said. "Just being in that stadium -- I took a few videos and just looking back at those, I showed some of my classmates -- it is just an unreal scene. You would think it is a national holiday. There were so many people, and while the band it is playing it is just so loud in there."

Hines also relayed to Powers that he was able to spend plenty of time with '17 running back J.K. Dobbins (Ohio State commit), Raekwon McMillan, Head Coach Urban Meyer and Luke Fickell.

As for when the Buckeyes will know Hines' decision, the 6-foot-2, 222-pounder told Powers that his selection could come on Nov. 29th or in early December. Hines concluded to Powers that "Right now, probably it is a deadlocked race" in his recruitment.

He’s making things happen for others.

“If the traditional measures aren’t working to properly appreciate Raekwon McMillan's impact, maybe some new categories are needed for Ohio State’s star middle linebacker.”

- Austin Ward, ESPN

Raekwon’s numbers are down across the board this season. Some people have made much more of it than others, but he’s really the same player. Total tackles, sacks, and fumble recoveries are down for McMillan, but it’s because he’s helping create plays for his teammates. “I’m not having the year I had last year statistically or whatever,” he told Ward. “And you know, a lot goes into that. I had 100-plus tackles last year, and we were on the field a lot more last year as well, so there were more opportunities to go make plays.”

Yet, he’s still leading the team in total tackles with 54. And he’s also fine with not making all of the plays. “That’s just life, man. You’re not always making the play at middle linebacker, trying to get everybody else situated and right. You’re not always being the flashy guy that gets the most accolades or whatever.” Defensive coordinator Luke Fickell appreciates his approach, and said that, ““He understands the true meaning of leadership.” That’s exactly what you want from the guy quarterbacking your defense.

“Should the Buckeyes be No. 4, ahead of Washington?”

- Brian Bennett, ESPN

In Tuesday night’s unveiling of the latest College Football Playoff rankings, Ohio State came up just short of Washington for the No. 4 and final playoff spot. The Huskies are in the midst of a 9-0 season, and have look really good in some blowout victories. The Buckeyes have one loss on the year to now ranked No. 10 Penn State, and after a dominant 62-3 victory over Nebraska last week, many felt like it should have been the Buckeyes, not the Huskies, at No. 4.

That may or may not be true, but it doesn’t really matter. If OHio State wins out, they’re in. If they lose anywhere along the way, the odds of them making it with two losses and no division or conference championship is just about impossible. And yes, under what the committee showed in the first week with Texas A&M at No. 4, one might imagine that under that logic Ohio State should then take their spot. That could be the case, but again, it won’t matter if the Bucks just win out.

“Dallas Cowboys running back Ezekiel Elliot will be central to the Pittsburgh Steelers' game plan this week.”

- Jeremy Fowler, ESPN

The Pittsburgh Steelers are in the middle of a heated race in the AFC North. Sunday, they’ll be tasked with trying to slow down former Ohio State running back and current NFL leading rusher Ezekiel Elliott. Elliott’s been punishing NFL defense all season with his bruising blows, setting the tone early against defenses. But the Steelers have a plan to try and counter that on Sunday. "It's important you have multiple guys hitting him, the hits accumulate on him where if he makes the first guy miss, you have two or three guys coming in to finish him off as well," linebacker Arthur Moats told Fowler.

Head coach Mike Tomlin also gave a glowing review of Elliott. “He can run inside, outside, and he has great vision. He has great contact balance. He almost always falls forward. He has really good and natural hands. He takes pride in blitz pickup. He simply does all the things that encompasses the running back position extremely well. He does it like breathing. It's probably second nature to him.” That’s coming from a guy who has had one of the best running backs in the league on his team for a few years now. Sunday should be fun between the two sides.

usa_today_9211739.0.jpg

The Ohio State women's basketball team is getting set to open its season on Friday, and they'll do so with one of the top players in the country.

There is little left for Kelsey Mitchell to achieve in the game of college basketball. The Ohio State point guard has already racked up nearly every personal accolade available to her in the college ranks, from National Freshman of the Year and leading the nation in scoring, to being a Big Ten Player of the Year, a first-team All-American, and a Naismith Award finalist for National Player of the Year.

Yet, while Mitchell has proven to be one of the top individual players in the game, she has yet to lead her team in fulfilling its ultimate goals, namely a Big Ten title and a run at the national championship.

The departures of seniors Ameryst Alston and Cait Craft after last season's Sweet 16 loss at the hands of Tennessee means that the Buckeyes are now Mitchell's team, and by all accounts she is stepping up to fill the leadership void.

"She's talking more, she's more engaged," head coach Kevin McGuff told The Lantern. "She's obviously a great kid, one of the hardest workers I've ever been around, and she's a fierce competitor. But she's also got a really good feel for the game, and I think that you see her sharing that more with her teammates."

The Cincinnati native was recently named preseason Big Ten Player of the Year by both the conference's coaches and the media, and also received preseason first-team All-America honors. As a sophomore, Mitchell was third in Division I in scoring at 26.1 points per game, a tick above the 24.9 she averaged in leading the nation as a freshman.

Mitchell became more of a complete player last season, as well, leading the team in both assists and steals. With a bevy of new faces on the squad this year, her continued development will be key to a team that some in the national media believe can contend not only for the Big Ten crown, but to have their one shining moment at the NCAA tournament.

Ohio State enters the season ranked No. 6 by the coaches poll and No. 7 by the AP, and was picked by the Big Ten media to finish second behind perennial powerhouse Maryland in the conference standings. Mitchell also finds herself on the cusp of cementing her legacy in program history.

Entering the season, the former McDonald's High School All-American is in ninth place in career scoring in program history, just 1,056 points behind all-time leader Jantel Lavender. To break that record in this campaign seems unlikely, but Mitchell very well could surpass Katie Smith for the No. 2 spot by the end of the season, as she needs 817 points to do so, a number she has passed in each of her first two seasons.

But Mitchell appears to be uninterested in those individual achievements. As she told The Lantern, "I'm not really into that. I just come to the court, play and go to school. There are so many great players that came through Ohio State, so to even be a part of that conversation is something that I'm really, really grateful for."

The individual records and honors will surely come if she continues to play at the elite level she has displayed since she set foot on Ohio State's campus. The real question now is can she be the leader the Buckeyes need, and direct the team's efforts to a bigger accomplishment?

Mitchell and her teammates will be begin trying to answer that question on Friday.

The Terps are, well, not great. But they can run!

The Maryland Terrapins are 5-4 so far in 2016. Barring a major catastrophe for fans of the Scarlet and Gray, the Big Ten’s preeminent coastal franchise is going to drop to 5-5 on the year. This scenario is certainly important to fans of both teams, and a blowout by Ohio State (or a failure to engineer one) could have major implications for next week’s playoff rankings. But this is less important than something related to the broader context of football, and our sporting culture at large. If you’ll indulge me:

Ohio State linebacker Jerome Baker, besides being a fine football player, is by all accounts an exemplary human being. Since high school, he has worked actively among teammates and peers to bring issues of consent to the fore in the locker room. We live in a world in which being talented at something (that is, after all, only a game) can serve as a shield for all types of evil behavior, not least of which is sexual assault. Baker, a college sophomore, has demonstrated a keen understanding of football’s complicity in this horrifying social problem; more importantly, he has demonstrated a commitment to being part of the solution.

This autumn, and a few autumns ago, college football presented us with sensational examples of large-scale institutional failure. In both instances, the schools in question did not act preventatively, proactively, or remotely morally in response to sex crimes related to their football programs. When the hammer fell, it seemed as though it was only because the weight of public opinion was so heavy that it could not be held back any longer. But punitive justice, as much as it slakes our collective need for revenge, can’t undo the wrongs that it attempts to redress. What we can do—what we must do—is to be proactive in these matters. Jerome Baker is a football player; he’s also a shining example of said proactivity in the face of a culture that has toxic roots. He should be commended for it.

Now, on to the football.

The stats

Name: Jerome Baker

Number: 17

Position: OLB

Year: Sophomore

Height: 6’1

Weight: 225 lbs.

Line: 39.5 tackles, 6 TFLs, 1.5 sacks, 1 INT, 1 fumble recovery

Baker, who entered the season behind Dante Booker on the depth chart, has seized upon the opportunity granted him by Booker’s injury to emerge as one of the best players on the Buckeye defense. Baker has quietly amassed the second-most tackles on the team, and has been party to some of the more memorable moments of the season so far.

The sophomore linebacker has a nose for the ball, and is both fast and disciplined moving sideways to contain opposing rushers. Ohio State will need him to do just that against Maryland on Saturday.

Opposition research

Maryland has been so-so at just about everything in 2016. The one thing they clearly do well is run the football. The Terrapins are ranked ninth in the country by rushing S&P+, which is certainly nothing to sneeze at. That includes their No. 14 ranking in rushing IsoPPP, which tells us that they’re pretty dang explosive on the ground.

There are a pair of key players that Buckeye fans need to concern themselves with. Freshman tailback Lorenzo Harrison leads the team with 88 carries for 633 yards and five TDs on the season; his complement, sophomore Ty Johnson, has 635 yards and four TDs on just 69 carries. Johnson did leave Maryland’s game against Michigan on Saturday with an injury in the fourth quarter, so it remains to be seen if he’ll do any damage against the Buckeyes. If he can go, watch out.

(Speaking of watching out, the Terrapins are going to be wearing these bad boys for Saturday’s game, which are, uhhh...very red. In what will almost certainly be the most controversial portion of this entire article, I should confess that I actually love Maryland’s more common state flag unis—the ones with the checks and crosses and like eight different colors. Can’t explain it.)

What to watch for

The Maryland run game is not predicated upon power. Instead, the Terrapins employ a shifty pair of backs who are talented at getting outside the tackles and breaking big gains downfield. The good news for Ohio State fans is that these are precisely the kinds of runs that Jerome Baker seems built to stop. Baker’s size, speed, and ability to read plays make him a unique threat to opposing rushers; he’s a candidate for a backfield stuff on every run to his side. (As a team, the Buckeyes are second in the country when it comes to run-stuffing.)

The defense has fallen off when it comes to explosive run plays, against which the Buckeyes rank just 77th nationally, but there’s no reason to think they’ll get gashed by the Terrapins on Saturday. Maryland has little to boast of in the way of a passing game (52nd nationally), and regular starting QB Perry Hills was forced out of the Michigan game with an injury in the second quarter. Whether or not he’s healthy enough to take on the Buckeyes remains to be seen. The same injury has forced him out of three different games already this season; when he has been on the field, the Maryland o-line has given up a whopping 21 sacks. With Hills and Ty Johnson in doubt, Maryland might have to lean heavily on Lorenzo Harrison to string together any semblance of an offense against the Buckeyes.

The point guard has singed his paperwork and is officially a Buckeye.

Nearly a month after announcing his verbal pledge to the Buckeyes, Braxton Beverly is now officially a part of the Ohio State basketball family. Alongside numerous of his Hargrave Military Academy (VA) teammates on Wednesday morning, the standout point guard put pen to paper, sealing the deal with Thad Matta and OSU.

Signing his National Letter of Intent, the former Miami (OH) commit will add another true point guard to the roster alongside JaQuan Lyle, JUCO transfer CJ Jackson, and former walk-on Joey Lane next season.

Not the biggest guard at only 5’11 and around 170-pounds, Beverly might not have the size of recent OSU lead guard D’Angelo Russell or current lead man JaQuan Lyle, but he makes up for it with a tough as nails attitude and leadership on the court.

Beverly told Land-Grant Holy Land late Tuesday, "It's a very exciting feeling! I'm anxious to get to campus and get to work and officially become a Buckeye!"

Blessed with great vision, Beverly, the former prep school teammate of current Buckeye forward Derek Funderburk, is known to dish passes to open players or stop on a dime and find his own shot.

Averaging over 20 points and six assists a contest last season as a junior, Beverly, the 64st ranked point guard and 316th overall prospect in the 2017 class per the 247Sports Composite Rankings, led the Hargrave Academy Tigers squad to an overall record of 20-7.

Attending a prep school with rich history, Beverly has his name in the Hargrave archives among some of the best to ever wear a Tiger jersey. Scoring 70 points in a game last season against Chatham Hall (VA), he broke Shaker Heights, Ohio native and current NBA player Terry Rozier’s school record by one point.

Scouting Report

“Beverly is as skilled as he is tough. He owns a wealth of intangibles and is the consummate leader on the floor at the point guard position. He's ultra-scrappy and competitive with a true chip on his shoulder.” -ESPN

The team might not win a Big Ten title this year, but that doesn’t mean the stakes aren’t high.

Ohio State’s first regular season basketball game is this Friday, when they travel to face Navy.

Normally, around this time of year, I’d write a column where I’d try to hype up this Ohio State basketball team as fun, or different from last year, and give you reasons to be invested.

I’m not going to do that this year. I have no idea if Ohio State basketball will be fun. I am cautiously optimistic that they will be better than last season. And perhaps exceed the modest expectations the national media has for them, but I certainly don’t know that for a fact. The Buckeyes have been frustrating and underachieving for the last few seasons. It’s certainly possible that they’ll finish that way again.

But I can write with a perfectly straight face that this Ohio State basketball team is going to be an important one.

The Buckeyes have watched their fortunes decline since a regional final appearance in the 2012-2013 season. Last year, they failed to make the NCAAs entirely, the first Ohio State team to do that since 2007-2008.

Already, one highly regarded recruiting class, featuring players like Amir Williams, Shannon Scott and Sam Thompson, failed to produce a roster capable of making much of a March run. Nearly all of the 2015 class, ranked in the top ten nationally, has transferred. And the bulk of Ohio State’s last large recruiting class, 2014, are now upperclassmen.

On some level, this is the year for Ohio State. Last year’s leading scorer, Marc Loving, is a senior. It is possible, if not probable, that some combination of Jaquan Lyle and Trevor Thompson will leave early to pursue professional basketball careers after this year. And the next cavalry of higher rated Ohio State recruits doesn’t really come in until the 2018 class. If the Buckeyes don’t make a move now, it might be a while before they’re able to.

Will they be able to take a big step forward? These questions will go a long way towards answering that.

What kind of impact will Chris Jent have?

Regular readers of this website know that we were supporters of Jeff Boals, who left this offseason to become the new head coach at Stony Brook. Under Boals, Ohio State continued to defend at an above average level, keeping them in games when their shot wasn’t falling.

But over the last few seasons, it was clear that those shots weren’t falling at a higher and higher clip. Replacing Boals is former Ohio State assistant, and offensive guru Chris Jent. Jent, who has coached in the NBA and personally tutored LeBron James, is an Ohio State guy through and through, and said to bring a more intense element to Ohio State’s coaching staff. Will he able to coax additional offensive improvement from a group that is experienced, but has yet to produce efficient offense, or will true improvement be found once Jent is able to bring in more of “his” guys?

Who is playing center?

Trevor Thompson, a 6’11 big man who played in every game last season, would seem like the favorite to land the most minutes at the five. After all, he returns the most experience, production, and even showed flashes last season of how he could be a productive professional basketball player. But the starter during Ohio State’s scrimmage against Walsh was freshman big man Micah Potter.

Potter represents a look that Ohio State hasn’t really had in years, as a floor stretching big man. While Thompson gives the Buckeyes a more conventional look, with rim protection and rebounding, Potter can help improve Ohio State’s anemic spacing, giving wings more room to get to the basket. He can also hit threes (he hit one against Walsh).

The adjustment period for freshman into Big Ten play is often a harsh one, so Potter may have a learning curve to navigate, but how this rotation works out could be fascinating. Given how long Ohio State is at other positions, perhaps they can get away with playing Potter at a five more often. But if Thompson’s minutes decrease significantly, does it increase chances that he leaves after the season? Can Potter provide the rim protection needed against say, a Purdue, or a Wisconsin?

Can this team cut back on turnovers?

If you don’t have a team that can be relied on to bomb away from downtown (which Ohio State doesn’t), efficient offensive play becomes even more critical. And nothing ruins that more than turnovers, something the Buckeyes struggled badly with last year, especially in the backcourt.

The addition of C.J. Jackson, a more traditional, pass-first point guard option to supplement JaQuan Lyle might help. Jackson had a team leading six assists against Walsh (against four turnovers), and earned the praise of nearly everybody around the Ohio State program, from coaches to players. Turnovers are going to be part of Lyle’s game, and something Ohio State will need to learn to live with, but can the rest of the roster mitigate them enough to win?

Will Ohio State help or hurt themselves before Big Ten play?

Last year, the Buckeyes drew what turned out to be a very easy Big Ten schedule, helping them pick up a gaudy win-loss record and push them closer to the bubble. But horrible losses to UT-Arlington, Louisiana Tech and Memphis damaged their RPI to the point that not even a win over Kentucky could salvage it. Ohio State simply needed to make up too much ground and didn’t have enough games to do it.

This year’s schedule is likely a little tougher, and the Buckeyes will probably need to win at least one of UConn, UCLA, and a road trip to Virginia. But there are other games that could trip them up, like a road trip at Navy, a game against a rebuilding Providence squad, and showdowns with Marshall and UNC-Asheville could be good enough to upset the Buckeyes if they overlook them.

This Ohio State team should be improved, but they may not be improved enough to absorb a terrible loss or two without crushing their postseason hopes.
