It’s never a bad thing to get a commitment from one of the most prestigious hockey prep schools.

The hockey prep school that gave the world Sidney Crosby, Zach Parise and Jonathan Toews is sending a player to the Ohio State hockey team. Today, forward Caleb Rule committed to the Ohio State mens hockey team for the 2018-19 season.

Rule was born the day after Valentine’s Day, 1999 and currently leads the Shattuck-St. Mary’s boys prep team in scoring with 26 points in 21 games this season. He'll join the Buckeyes in two years when he's just 19 years old.

He blossomed last season for the Shattuck-St. Mary’s U16 team, putting up 67 points in just 53 games overall, after just 35 in 55 games the year before. Last year, his third at Shattuck was his first at a point per game at any level the school had to offer. He did score 36 points in 29 games in 2012-13 when he was just 13 years old on the Belle Tire Bantam Minor AAA team.

Hailing from Lansing Michigan, you'd have to think that Rule would have to change his feelings on OSU. But he's tweeted about pretty much nothing but Bible passages and Ohio State for a solid two months. He even retweeted Cloyd Rivers (shudders) talking up Ohio State for a veteran's memorial. Caleb also seems to endorse Noah Brown touchdown catches versus Oklahoma. Me too, Mr. Rule.

Rule will have another year to prepare before becoming a Buckeye to hopefully boost his draft stock. He wasn’t one of NHL Central Scouting’s future prospects to watch coming into this year despite the PPG+ season last year, but hopefully another year and then a solid career at OSU can boost those prospects.

Either way, Ohio State certainly looks like it has a good one coming in from a great hockey academy.

LGHL Urban Meyer keeps it simple: ‘Beat Maryland’

There may be a change at punt returner, though.

Urban Meyer took to the podium just days after a big win against a No. 10 Nebraska and repeated “Beat Maryland” several times throughout his time with the media. In addition to the football updates, Meyer was asked about the election causing issue in the locker room, but the head coach noted he has a mature locker room and just hopes the guys get out and vote.

  • Playcalling seemed to be improved against Nebraska. Meyer noted that he is getting opinions from a bigger group than he has in the past, but he wants plays that his staff loves not just likes.
  • The receivers stepped up big this week, with Meyer saying the young players “blocked well on the screen passes” and “was their best game by far.” The development of the young guys “plateaued” after the first few games, but has seemingly been jump started after the Penn State loss.
  • K.J. Hill, specifically, has earned more playing time throughout the season, with Meyer touting the receiver as “a very reliable guy, good blocker, always in the right place, very good hands”.
  • On punt returners moving forward, Meyer said Curtis Samuel is in there now, and K.J. Hill and Parris Campbell might work in. They are still evaluating Dontre Wilson at the position.
  • Meyer was asked about Malik Hooker’s ability with the ball in his hands. He quipped, “every time I watch him I want to switch him over to offense and flip it to him a few times”. He continued that the intensity that results from interceptions is incredible
  • “This was the best it could have been,” Meyer boasted in terms of a big recruiting game for the Buckeyes. The head coach has discussed his hesitancy to have so many recruits at such a high-stakes game, but this time it worked out.
  • Meyer was asked when there is a big injury, like Tommy Armstrong, how he handles the dip in energy and how he responds. The head coach said the most important thing is that the young player is okay, and the second thing is to keep his players moving on the sideline.

Giving the ball to one of your best players worked out pretty well.

Stop me if you’ve heard this story before, but after weeks of struggling offensive production, especially in the passing game, Ohio State fans begged the team to find ways to give Curtis Samuel the ball.

Well, they listened. And things worked out pretty okay for the Buckeyes. And now, the Big Ten has noticed.

After absolutely thrashing a top ten Nebraska squad 62-3 on Saturday, the Big Ten named Ohio State’s Curtis Samuel the co-offensive player of the week, sharing the award with Michigan quarterback Wilton Speight.

Samuel torched Nebraska in a variety of different ways. He helped jump start Ohio State’s struggling deep passing attack with a 75 yard touchdown catch. He fought for tough yards through contact. And when the dust settled, he finished with 178 total yards (41 on the ground over five carries, and 137 through the air on eight catches), and two touchdowns.

As a team, Ohio State finished with 590 total yards.

When Samuel is stretching defenses like this, Ohio State’s offense is nearly impossible to shut down. This was Samuel’s first weekly Big Ten honor, but if he’s able to sustain even a fraction of this level of production, it won’t be his last.

The first sane line since ... the last one?

Fresh on the heels of Ohio State laying the wood to Nebraska, 62-3, and Michigan doing similar to Maryland, Urban Meyer’s Buckeyes prepare to head to the area surrounding our nation’s capital looking to keep the momentum going.

While first-year head coach D.J. Durkin’s Terps doesn’t present the same level of challenge as the Cornhuskers, in order to stay the course and set up a proper potential Big Ten East division championship game against the Wolverines Thanksgiving weekend, the Bucks will need to keep their foot on the pedal.

With sportsbooks taking action for nearly a day now, the Ohio State-Maryland betting lines have settled around 27.5 after opening at 28. A week ago we guffawed at the Bucks being three score favorites against NU after struggling on and off for the past month. Turned out that line was low.

This week’s spread feels far more in line with reality. The Bucks will be hard pressed to match Michigan’s 59-3 lambasting of the former Meyer/Jim Harbaugh assistant coach’s first team of his own, but a comfortable win for the second time in three years in the D.C. area feels more in line with reality -- or at least expectations.

What say you? Will OSU cruise to another decisive victory? Or can Maryland tap into the formula Northwestern nearly used to upend the Bucks in Ohio Stadium two weeks ago?

Two Buckeyes even scored twice on Sunday.

Now in the back stretch of the season, Week 9 in the NFL was good for former Buckeyes. The rookies, both offense and defense, have proven why Ohio State won the 2014 National Championship, and why they had so many players drafted in 2016. A few players finally returned from injuries, while others stayed sidelined.

Touchdowns for everyone!

Former Ohio State players showed off this week, with four guys scoring touchdowns — and some more than one. The 2016 class of NFL rookies has done a great job of making announcers talk about how good Buckeyes are on a consistent basis. By season’s end, there is a good chance that at least one, if not more, walk away with new rookie records and awards.

Ezekiel Elliott (Cowboys) continued his impressive rookie season in Week 9, with a 92 yard day against the Browns, and two touchdowns. This is his second week in a row just shy of over 100 rushing yards. Elliott has now rushed for 891 yards and seven touchdowns this season, making him the third back — joining Eric Dickerson and Adrian Peterson — in NFL history to rush for at least 875 yards and seven touchdowns in just eight career games.

Jalin Marshall (Jets) recorded his first NFL career touchdown in Week 9 against the Dolphins. He could see an increase in snaps and targets if he keeps showing this kind of ability, not only on special teams, but on offense too. He finished the day with three receptions for 59 yards and a touchdown.

Terrelle Pryor (Browns) was the only player from Cleveland to make it into the endzone Sunday, where the team continued their win-less streak this season. Pryor was at least able to snag five catches for 47 yards and score.

Michael Thomas (Saints) finished the day with five receptions for 73 yards and two touchdowns against the Niners. The rookie is now at 500 receiving yards on the season, and well on his way to a great career in New Orleans.

Corey Linsley off PUP

The Green Bay Packers activate the center just days ahead of their matchup with the Indianapolis Colts. After tearing his hamstring twice this offseason, Linsley was placed on the physically unable to perform list for the first have of the season. The timing of his return couldn’t better for the Packers, who just lost their backup, J.C. Tretter, to a knee injury.

Steelers defense reloaded

Both Cam Heyward and Ryan Shazier are back after missing several games due to injury, but thanks to last week’s bye, were able to make their return to face division rival Baltimore. The two former Silver Bullets are two of the few bright spots currently on a banged up Steelers team.

Plays of the week

Johnathan Hankins

Defenders need love too; especially when they can stuff an offense in the redzone like the Buckeye did for the Giants against division rival Philadelphia. Hankins has been a big factor for the Giants this year, and has stepped up in clutch moments through the season, recording several sacks and key stuffs like this:

Bosa Shrug

Joey Bosa may not have recorded a sack on Sunday, but when teammate Brandon Flowers completed a Pick-6, he gave a nod to the Buckeye and his signature celebration:

Other notes

  • This week’s ‘Monday Night Football’ will feature quite a few rookies out of Ohio State when the Buffalo Bills (Cardale Jones, Adolphus Washington) face the Seattle Seahawks (Tyvis Powell, Nick Vannett).
  • The NFL trade deadline was this past week which benefited former Ohio State offensive lineman Chase Farris, who was signed to the Patriots’ practice squad.
  • Several Buckeyes were on bye this week, including the Houston Texans (Braxton Miller, John Simon), Chicago Bears (Mike Adams), New England Patriots (Nate Ebner) and Cincinnati Bengals (Mike Nugent).
  • Alex Boone (Vikings) was out with a concussion in Week 9. Nick Mangold (Jets) and teammate Darron Lee, both missed their second game in a row with ankle injuries. Jack Mewhort (Colts) was inactive with a lingering tricep injury. Running back Carlos Hyde (Niners) missed another game Sunday thanks to a shoulder injury.
  • The New Orleans Saints placed James Laurinaitis on IR for a lingering quad injury — the veteran had never missed a game in his entire career until this season.

The Buckeyes played host to a large group of prospects over the weekend.

While some college coaches might hate playing prime time matchups, Urban Meyer and the Ohio State coaching staff love suiting up under the lights in Ohio Stadium. Taking on the Nebraska Cornhuskers on Saturday night, the Buckeyes used the opportunity to impress a rather lengthy list of OSU verbal commits and top recruiting targets.

Watching J.T. Barrett, Mike Weber, Malik Hooker and the rest of the Buckeyes roll past Nebraska in person, well over 20 of the best high school prospects in the country made the trek to Columbus to see what Ohio State has to offer on and off the football field.

Just like many Ohio State fans did, quite a few of the recruits who roamed The Horseshoe went to their Twitter pages to share their excitement on the Buckeyes 62-3 blowout victory over the Cornhuskers.

Want to see what some of the recruits had to say on social media about their time on the Ohio State campus over the weekend? Land-Grant Holy Land has your back:
