The ticking timebomb finally went off.

Michigan head football coach Jim Harbaugh is a lot of things.

The second years Wolverine head man is very much a product of his former college coach, Bo Schembechler, and a bit of a throwback to the era of Schembechler and his former boss Woody Hayes. He never hesitates to wear his heart on his sleeve and speaks his mind. And his team usually responds in kind.

Unfortunately for him, the emotion he’s known for caught up with him at around the most inopportune time late in the third quarter against Ohio State. Up 17-7 with OSU looking completely lost in all three phases of the game, an interception by the Buckeyes was followed up by an offside call. While it appeared that Michigan’s defender either bated the Ohio State guard into jumping or engaging with his opponent, Harbaugh strongly disagreed. The result was a temper tantrum for the ages which added a half the distance to the goal penalty which set Ohio State up for a touchdown to make the game a three-point affair:

Just when Ohio State needs a big play, Hooker delivered.

To say that Ohio State’s offense was struggling against Michigan would be a dramatic understatement. Completely unable to get ahead of schedule, pass protect with consistency or hit players in stride, the Buckeyes failed to sustain any drive after their first, and looked to head into halftime trailing 3-0, or perhaps worse.

They needed a big play in the worst way. And well, who else to deliver but their best playmakers on defense?

After an excellent punt pinned the Wolverines deep in their own territory, a blitz from Raekwon McMillan forced this errant throw, right into Malik Hooker’s hands. And guess what he did with it?

He returned it for a touchdown. That’s the third time he’s done that this season, which is nuts.

The Buckeyes now lead 7-3, and will try to hang out before halftime. It just might be the momentum they need to start to turn this game around.

Despite earlier indications that he has too injured to play, the Wolverines starter will apparently give it a go.

Amid the thousands of other storylines swirling around ahead of The Game, perhaps none was more important to the actual event on the field than the question of who is going to play quarterback for Michigan.

And now, we have a bit of a mild upset. Michigan’s Wilton Speight will start against the Buckeyes.

Speight was injured and left the game against Iowa, and his backup, John O’Korn, played the entire game against Indiana. Earlier reports indicated Speight had a broken collarbone, which would rule him out against the Buckeyes, but he also reportedly practiced during the week.

Either Speight has the real Wolverine working on the team medical staff, or his actual injury situation was a bit different than previously reported.

When healthy, Speight has been a very effective quarterback for Michigan, throwing for 2,156 yards and 15 touchdowns on the season, against only four interceptions. If O’Korn’s performance last week was an indication of what Michigan could expect with him under center, the Wolverine offense is unquestionably better and more dangerous with Speight under center.

But, starter or no, there’s a fair chance he won’t be completely 100% today, and his health will certainly be one of the storylines to watch, especially if he takes a hit or two.

Game Thread Ohio State at Michigan State, 11/19/16, 12p ET ESPN/WatchESPN

You could just as easily infer that we have done these things to ourselves. When we see a good team, on the road, with weather conditions we allow ourselves to become mentally ill prepared for it. We allow ourselves to play to their advantages.

certainly possible. but before i consider this likely i would need to see any indication of this occurring in any other situation what so ever. thus far i have not. other than not being able to throw in insanely poor weather conditions (seems like a no brainer), i personally have seen no indication that the team has been mentally unprepared for any game. not saying it hasn't happened... have you seen this? if so, what game(s) and or situations?

It’s time for war.

Former Ohio State quarterback Cardale Jones is iconic for many a number of reasons.

He most notably led the Buckeyes to a national championship going through Alabama in SEC country and dominated Oregon in the national title game on about the shortest notice imaginable, not even months after starting the season as OSU’s third string quarterback.

Now back learning in the third QB role with the NFL’s Buffalo Bills, Cardale’s not going to be in uniform for the Ohio State game on the field for the first time since he was at prep school. But that doesn’t mean he’s not pulling out the stops to make sure he’s game ready:

With a berth in the College Football Playoff on the line, this year’s rivalry matchup means even more than usual.

The Ohio State Buckeyes are ready to face off against the Michigan Wolverines in the 112th edition of the storied rivalry. Michigan currently leads the series by a margin of 58-47-4, though the Buckeyes own a four-game win streak in the contest, and no current Buckeye on the roster has lost to Michigan. This time, however, both teams are playing for more than pride, as a win in the matchup would all-but-guarantee a berth in the College Football Playoff.

In what is expected to be the most competitive of recent iterations of The Game, both Ohio State and Michigan bring high-powered, top-ranked, stifling defenses to the table against sometimes hot, sometimes cold offenses. And while Michigan has Jabrill Peppers playing linebacker/returner/whatever else on the field, Ohio State boasts Curtis Samuel--who Peppers, most likely, will be tasked with covering. And then there is the fact that Urban Meyer and Jim Harbaugh will be facing off against one another for their second round of The Game.

With all the preseason and midseason discussion and hype surrounding the end-of-season matchup, it is all finally here.

When is the game and how can I watch?

Game Date/Time: Saturday, Nov. 26, 12 p.m.

Location: Columbus, Ohio

TV: ABC

Online: WatchESPN

Radio: 97.1 FM/1460 AM

Where is GameDay this weekend?

GameDay is returning to Columbus ahead of the top-five matchup--the sixth time in the show’s history that it has originated from the rivalry game. This week’s show will run for five hours beginning at 7 a.m. in front of Ohio Stadium, with the last hour taking place on the field at the Horseshoe.

What’s the rest of the Big Ten up to today?

The entire conference--with the exception of Iowa and Nebraska, who played yesterday--is playing in early or afternoon games today. Alongside Ohio State at noon today, Purdue faces Indiana on ESPNU, Illinois takes on Northwestern on BTN and Rutgers heads to Maryland on ESPNN. At 3:30 p.m., Michigan State faces No. 7 Penn State on ESPN, while Minnesota heads to No. 6 Wisconsin on BTN.

The Buckeyes seem like they’re about to bust out some fresh digs for The Game.

Everything about the Ohio State-Michigan game is special; the history, the pageantry, and yes, the uniforms. Earlier this week, social media posts started leaking out that suggested that LeBron James had gifted the Buckeyes pairs of the LeBron Soldier 10 SFGs for The Game.

Four hours before the No. 2 and No. 3 teams in the country meet on the field, King James tweeted a picture that seemed to confirm the shoewear switch as the cleats hung with the Buckeyes’ home red jerseys with the black shoulder numbers.

— LeBron James (@KingJames) November 26, 2016

There was also early speculation that the Buckeyes might be switching up their headgear as well, and a look at J.T. Barrett’s locker on ESPN’s “College GameDay” reinforced the suspicion, as the shot included an Ohio State black matte helmet.

helmet.jpg

It’s the black helmet, and not the typical gray one, that’s sitting around the GameDay set as well. Hmmmmmm.

— Eric Seger (@EricSeger33) November 26, 2016

I mean, fancy black helmets would match these new black shoes Ohio State seems to be wearing.

Keeping with giving spirit, Nike and LeBron also gave a pair of shoes to every baby born at the Ohio State Wexner Medical Center on Friday and Saturday.

If that ends up being what Ohio State wears this afternoon, they’ll look pretty sharp.

Which Marvel heroes would J.T. Barrett, Curtis Samuel, and Malik Hooker be?

When it comes to the greatest rivalry in college sports, heroes and villains can be made in a single Saturday. For generations, The Game has created it’s share of good and bad guys, depending on which side of the Ohio-Michigan border you reside; be it Troy Smith, Desmond Howard, Braxton Miller, or Tim Biakabutuka. So, as we prepare for another epic clash of titans on Saturday, as No. 2 Ohio State hosts No. 3 Michigan, why don’t we break down the matchup from a more cinematic perspective, a Marvel cinematic perspective?

Since it is clear that in this blockbuster metaphor Ohio State is the good guys, since Stan Lee would never allow the bad guys to win 13 out of 15 times, let’s look at how some of Scarlet and Grey players might equate in more colorful superhero costumes.

Curtis Samuel is Iron Man

samuel.jpg

Tommy Gilligan-USA TODAY Sports | Marvel Studios

While not quite indestructible, H-back Curtis Samuel is the Tony Stark of Ohio State’s team. Full of bells and whistles, there’s nearly nothing that #4 can’t do. This season he has produced consistently on traditional handoffs, gadget plays, in the screen game, and on deep passes.

With 790 receiving yards, in addition to 650 on the ground, he could still become the first FBS player in history to reach 1,000 yards both rushing and receiving in the same season, depending on how the post-season shapes up for the Buckeyes.

While the reliable hero is sometimes overlooked, either because of the trusty zone-read, or new, more trendy good guys, there is no doubt that when the going gets tough, you want Iron Man Curtis Samuel on your side.

JT Barrett is Captain America

jt.jpg

Joe Maiorana-USA TODAY Sports | Marvel Studios

Unlike the flashier Iron Man, Captain America is a hero as much because of his honor and bravery as his super strength. Coming from a military family, quarterback J.T. Barrett is the perfect Ohio State equivalent for Steve Rogers. Though he doesn’t have the eye-popping skills of Samuels’ Iron Man, Barrett has the durability of at least 10 men.

The signal-caller has rushed the ball 164 times, the most for any quarterback in the Big Ten, and fourth nationally behind Navy’s Will Worth (243), Louisville’s Lamar Jackson (209), and Kent State’s Nick Holley (195). While the other three QBs’ totals are impressive, none of them play against the rough-and-tumble defenses that Barrett has faced in the Big Ten this season.

At times, including in his 24 carries against Michigan State, watching Barrett run the ball is reminiscent of a still puny Rogers standing up for himself against the bully; he accepted the punishment and kept coming back for more.

However, we also know that it is this courage and willingness to do what is necessary that has made Cap one of the most beloved figures in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and conversely, Barrett one of the most beloved QBs in Ohio State history.

Malik Hooker is Hawkeye

malik.jpg

Matthew O'Haren-USA TODAY Sports | Marvel Studios

Let’s be honest, very rarely do defensive players get the pub and adoration as their offensive counterparts, however, when the defender has five interceptions on the season and has returned two for touchdowns, he can be tough to ignore.

Thus is the case with Buckeye safety Malik Hooker. In his sophomore season, Hooker has been a reliable playmaker in the secondary for OSU, and no matter where he starts on the field, it feels like he has an innate ability to zero in on the place that he most needs to be.

While Hawkeye certainly doesn’t have the abilities of Captain America, or the toys of Iron Man, what he does have is the inhuman range and accuracy that makes him a force to be reckoned with no matter the opponent.

Mike Weber is Ant Man

mike.jpg

Greg Bartram-USA TODAY Sports | Marvel Studios

In his first 11 games on the field for Ohio State, Weber hasn’t made Buckeye fans forget about all-timers like Carlos Hyde and Ezekiel Elliott, but he has proven to be a valuable and entertaining addition to the OSU stable of heroes.

Listed at 5’10” and 212 lbs., having fought through a nasty shoulder injury in the latter part of the season, the running back has made it clear that there is a lot more strength and toughness than his otherwise diminutive frame would suggest. And, while fans might still be waiting for the breakaway speed to take him from hero to Avenger, it’s clear that he has the makings of a valuable member of the stable.

In his 2015 solo introduction, Paul Rudd showed more humor than we’ve seen from Weber thus far, but what was most fascinating about “Ant-Man” is that it eschewed the normal Marvel formula of climactic scene involving cities being destroyed and implied massive amounts of human casualties. Instead in “Ant-Man” it was literally done in miniature, as it was set in a child’s toy-room.

As of yet, we haven’t seen Weber bust the game-breaking runs that Hyde and Elliott became known for, but he has proven that he is capable of impacting the game in smaller, consistent chunks.

Raekwon McMillan is The Hulk

rae.jpg

Joe Maiorana-USA TODAY Sports | Marvel Studios

In the late 1970s to the early 80s, there has likely no more widely known Marvel hero than The Hulk, thanks to the Bill Bixby and Lou Ferrigno-led television series. However, since then, the not-so jolly green giant has been one of the most problematic properties for Marvel. In the past 13 years, the studio has introduced a new actor playing the character’s alter-ego, Dr. Bruce Banner, three different times; Eric Bana (2003), Edward Norton (2008), Mark Ruffalo (2012).

Despite the lack of respect that the character has endured in recent years, he has continued to be a vital part of the Avengers, providing both the brains and brawn that the team needs in its most difficult moments.

In Columbus, the once unanimous adoration that All-American linebacker Raekwon McMillan enjoyed has somewhat eroded this season. However, that lack of respect is clearly misplaced, as the MLB continues to be the emotional and play-making leader for the OSU defense. It also doesn’t hurt that at 6’2”, 243 lb. the junior is a physical beast.

Noah Brown is The Falcon

noah.jpg

Photo by Mike McGinnis/Getty Images | Marvel Studios

After breaking his leg in one of the last practices before the 2015 season, the excitement for a healthy Noah Brown at wide receiver reached a fevered pitch after his four-touchdown performance against Oklahoma. Unfortunately for Brown and Buckeye fans hoping for a potent passing game this season, he has pulled in only two touchdowns in the eight games since that legendary output in Norman.

Similarly, The Falcon is an underused and underappreciated member of the extended Avengers team. He’s shown up in four Marvel films, dating back to “Captain America: The Winter Soldier,” but he rarely gets any love. He can fly, he boasts a pair of submachine guns, and he has a drone he controls from his wrist! What more do you want?

Memo to Marvel Studios and the Ohio State coaching staff: you have a potential game-changer in The Falcon/Noah Brown, don’t miss your chance to use him properly.

Demario McCall is Spider-Man

demario.jpg

Photo by Kirk Irwin/Getty Images | Marvel Studios

In limited duty this season, freshman Demario McCall has proven that he has the ability to be special. He is generously listed at 5’9” and 182 lbs., but he has shown himself capable of impressive feats that often defy physics.

Likewise, despite being young and undersized, especially compared to some of his Herculean compatriots, Spider-Man always makes the most of his opportunities. Granted, Marvel and Columbia Pictures have had more than their fair share of struggles getting the character established on screen since Tobey Maguire hung up his web-shooters in 2007.

However, based on his studio-crossover appearance in “Captain America: Civil War,” the more he is integrated into the larger Marvel Cinematic Universe, the better things will be for everyone. You got the hint Coaches Warinner and Beck?

So, what did we miss? What Marvel heroes would Gareon Conley, Marshawn Lattimore, and Dontre Wilson be? What Buckeyes would take the place of Thor, Daredevil, Luke Cage, or Doctor Strange? And, what villains would Jim Harbaugh, Jabrill Peppers, Jourdan Lewis, and Jake Butt be?

You can see the good guys host the bad guys on Saturday at 12:00 p.m. ET on ABC, as the No. 2 Ohio State Buckeyes take on the No. 3 Michigan Wolverines with a potential bid into the College Football Playoffs on the line.
