Buckeyes show flashes, but can’t keep up with UCLA’s offense.

After splitting their first two high-profile games of the season against Virginia and UConn, Ohio State came into the CBS Sports Classic with a tremendous amount to prove against second-ranked UCLA. After a first half that saw both teams go on impressive runs, the Bruins looked like a legit national title contender in the second half en route to securing an impressive 86-73 victory.

The Bruins came into the game averaging 97.9 points per game, while the Buckeyes were clocking in at 74.6. OSU was able to keep up with UCLA’s blistering scoring pace in the first half in part because of a hot Marc Loving and an opportunistic defense, but the second half brought a slightly different story.

After a slow start in the opening minutes, the teams began finding a bit of offense. Sparked by Trevor Thompson’s immediate impact off the bench, the Buckeyes took their first lead of the game, 14-11, on a Loving three-pointer nearly six minutes in.

Even though the Bruins entered the game leading the country in field goal percentage (56%), with a bit of energy and timely shooting Ohio State was able to keep pace. Halfway through the first half, the Buckeyes were shooting 47.1% to UCLA’s 50%; the Bruins had the lead at that point 21-20.

In the first half, Loving showed the shooting ability that Buckeye fans had envisioned when he joined the program four years ago. Loving had 8 points on 3-4 shooting (including 2-3 from behind the arc), at the under-8 minute timeout. He was the team’s leader amongst six Buckeyes who had scored at that point.

Despite going cold from the floor for a few minutes, Ohio State was able to force some turnovers from UCLA to keep the game close. The Bruins finished the first half with 12 turnovers. Then, with around six and a half minutes remaining in the first half, JaQuan Lyle turned a three-point attempt into a pass mid-air to find Jae-Sean Tate down low to give the Buckeyes a 26-25 lead.

From there, the Bruins used a flurry of Buckeye turnovers to race out to a 40-30 lead. However, over the next 1:22, Ohio State got buckets from Tate and Kam Williams, and a three from Loving, to cut the lead to 40-37 at the half.

Every player that saw the court for UCLA in the first half scored, including both Aaron Holiday (10) and Isaac Hamilton (9). At the break, Loving (13) and Tate (10) led OSU’s offense. Loving ended the half shooting 5-6 from the floor, including 3-4 from three.

Often in the first half, Ohio State found success with Tate setting up shop along the baseline, underneath the basket. The 6’4 forward was able to slip behind the Bruin defense and occasionally catch them off guard. However, more than once, he found himself too far under the rim to convert.

In the first 3+ minutes of the second half, Ohio State’s hot shooting cooled off considerably as they went one for their first six (16.7%), while UCLA went 4-8. The Bruins increased their lead to 51-40 on the strength of a 7-0 run in 1:06 before OSU head coach Thad Matta was forced to call timeout.

While Ohio State continued to fight, and occasionally cut the lead to 6 or 7, the Bruins remained in control through the first 10 minutes of the half, generally hovering around the double-digit mark.

With 8:35 left in the second half, C.J. Jackson found Keita Bates-Diop for an enthusiastic slam while being fouled. After hitting the free-throw, the Buckeyes trailed just 67-61.

Again finding themselves down 11, Williams hit OSU’s first three-pointer by someone not named Marc Loving to cut the lead to 78-70 with four minutes remaining. Then, with 2:16 left, Micah Potter converted on one of two free-throws to cut it to 78-71, but the Buckeyes were never able to close the gap from there.

The basketball Buckeyes will return to action on Tuesday against Youngstown State at 7:00 p.m. EST from the Value City Arena. The game will be broadcast on ESPN3.

Three things we learned:

1. UCLA is really good at basketball. After they knocked-off No. 1 Kentucky in Rupp Arena a few Saturdays ago, it was no longer a secret that UCLA was one of the best teams in the country. They have been able to get consistent and explosive scoring from everyone who steps foot on the floor for them.

However, seeing them in action against a hot-and-cold Ohio State team just reinforced how special of a team they are. The Buckeyes had stretches where they looked like they could be one of the best teams in the country, but other than occasional spurts where they couldn’t hang onto the ball, UCLA was full-throttle from the opening tip to the final buzzer.

Some, apparently, are questioning their defensive ability, but when you routinely put up 95-100 points in the normally offensively-challenged college basketball, maybe defense isn’t all it’s cracked up to be.

2. Marc Loving still has the stroke. Outside of the Loving extended family, it is unlikely that any Buckeye fan will say that Marc Loving’s career in Columbus has lived up to expectations. The former Mr. Ohio Basketball has shown flashes of brilliance in his three+ seasons, but he has not yet matured into the veteran scorer and leader that many hoped for him to be.

However, in the biggest game of the non-conference schedule, Loving showed up, at least in the first half. He was the game’s high scorer in the first 20 minutes with 13, converting on three of four from downtown. He finished with 19.

Coming into the game, he was averaging 11.5 points on 43.4% shooting (32.6% from three), so it is encouraging to see him have his best performance in the biggest game of the year, especially after he put up just 7 points on 3-8 shooting against UVA.

If he is able to bring more of the stroke and confidence that he displayed against UCLA (especially in the first half) into the Big Ten slate, he could cap his career with an impressive run.

3. Ohio State continues to struggle with the layups. It’s not quite the epidemic that Buckeye fans have been forced to witness from the free-thrown line over the years, but in a similar vein, the team has struggled with baskets closest to the rim over the last few seasons. The first five minutes of the game against UCLA saw three missed layups for the Buckeyes, in addition to a missed dunk and another bunny later in the first half.

While it would be foolish to expect them to hit every shot within three feet, when a team scores 18 of its 34 first half-points in the paint against the highest scoring team in the country, missing out on five additional baskets can be problematic.

Ohio State travels out to Las Vegas for the CBS Sports Classic, where they’ll try and hand UCLA their first loss of the season.

After breaking to focus on final exams, Ohio State will look to build on last Saturday’s win over UConn later today when they take on UCLA in Las Vegas in the third annual CBS Sports Classic. Today’s meeting will mark the 10th game between the schools, but the first since 1980. UCLA holds a 5-4 edge in the series, with the Bruins having won the last four meetings. Including today’s matchup, five of the last six matchups have seen one of the teams come in as either the top-ranked of second-ranked team in the country.

This year marks the third year of the CBS Sports Classic, with Ohio State posting a 1-1 record in their previous two appearances. In the inaugural event, Ohio State fell to North Carolina 82-74 in Chicago, while last year the Buckeyes were able to knock off Kentucky 74-67 in Brooklyn. UCLA is still looking for their first CBS Sports Classic win, as they have fallen to Kentucky and North Carolina in their first two appearances. With the success of the annual event, it was announced earlier this week the CBS Sports Classic has been extended until 2019. Next year Ohio State will play North Carolina and UCLA will matchup with Kentucky in New Orleans.

Ohio State was able to rebound from their embarrassing loss to Florida Atlantic, beating UConn 64-60 last Saturday in Columbus. The game against the Huskies wasn’t the prettiest for Buckeyes fans to watch, but a win is a win. Ohio State trailed at halftime for the first time this year, but was able to overcome some poor shooting to earn the win. The Buckeyes were able to win despite shooting less than 35% from the field, marking the first time since a win over Northwestern in the 2011 Big Ten Tournament they won a game with such poor shooting. Ohio State’s work from the free throw line is what helped to propel them to victory, with the Buckeyes setting season-highs in free throw attempts (34) and free throws made (26).

A big reason for Ohio State’s victory last Saturday was because of the play of Trevor Thompson, who registered his second double-double of the season, scoring 17 points and pulling down 17 rebounds. The Virginia Tech transfer has played his best basketball of the season of late, scoring double figures in three straight games. The 17 rebounds marked the eighth time while Thad Matta has been head coach in which a Buckeye has pulled down 17 or more rebounds in a game. The last time it happened was in February 2012 when Jared Sullinger grabbed 18 rebounds against Northwestern.

UCLA is one of just six undefeated teams left in the country. The Bruins have exhibited one of the most potent offenses in the country this year, scoring over 100 points in five games this season. Freshman forward TJ Leaf is one of six UCLA players averaging double figures in scoring, leading the Bruins with 18.3 points per game. UCLA has a nice mixture of youth and veteran leadership in their starting lineup, with Leaf and guard Lonzo Ball impressing in their first year with the Bruins, while seniors Issac Hamilton and Bryce Alford give the Bruins the experience they need.

Steve Alford’s team has jumped out to a 11-0 start for the first time since the 2006-07 season. The Bruins’ 11-game winning streak is now their longest since 2008, when they put together a 14-game winning streak. UCLA is now ranked second in the country, marking the first time since November 2007 that the Bruins have reached that high of a ranking.

UCLA had little trouble their last time out, jumping out to a 54-30 halftime lead over UC-Santa Barbara before eventually earning a 102-62 win over the Gauchos. Both TJ Leaf and Lonzo Ball almost registered triple-doubles in the lopsided win. Leaf finished with 25 points, 10 rebounds, and eight assists, while Ball scored 13 points, grabbed 10 rebounds, and handed out seven assists.

Today’s game marks the third time already this year that UCLA has played a team from the Big Ten. In late November, the Bruins topped Nebraska 82-71 in the Wooden Legacy. Last Saturday UCLA was tied with Michigan 50-50 at half, but pulled away from the Wolverines in the second half to secure a 102-84 victory. The other noteworthy win for the Bruins this year came two weeks ago when UCLA traveled to Lexington and knocked off the top-ranked Kentucky Wildcats 97-92.

Numbers to know

122

Today’s game marks the 122nd time Ohio State has played a ranked team under Thad Matta, which is the third-most in the country since Matta took over in Columbus before the 2004-05 season. Ohio State has amassed a 54-67 record in the 121 games against ranked teams prior to today, which is the 10th most wins against ranked teams during that span. Ohio State hasn’t fared so well against ranked foes lately though, dropping eight of the last 10 games against ranked opponents.

30

Ohio State shot a season-high 34 free throws last Saturday against UConn. Under Thad Matta, Ohio State is 40-0 when attempting 30 or more free throws in a game. The Buckeyes made 26 of those free throws, which brought their record under Matta to 63-3 when they make 20 or more free throws in a game.

20

UCLA has been tremendous at distributing the basketball this year, dishing out 20 assists in nine of their 11 games this year. On Wednesday night the Bruins registered 27 assists against UC-Santa Barbara, which marked the fifth time this year that the Bruins have recorded at least 27 assists in a game. The only two times UCLA has failed to record 20 assists this year was against Texas A&M (19 assists) and Kentucky (18 assists).

Cast of characters

Ohio State

JaQuan Lyle

With 16 points against UConn, Lyle scored his 500th point as a Buckeye. That wasn’t the only milestone for Lyle during the game, as the sophomore guard also dished out his 200th assist as a Buckeye. With four more rebounds Lyle will reach 200 boards during his Ohio State career. Lyle also had four steals against the Huskies which were a career-high.

Trevor Thompson

Even though he hasn’t started any games for the Buckeyes this year, Thompson has been one of Ohio State’s most productive players. The junior has reached double figures in scoring in all but three games so far this year, with the 17 points he scored against UConn setting a new career-high. Thompson has also been strong on the glass this year, grabbing at least seven rebounds in all but two games. Much like his point total against UConn, the 17 rebounds Thompson was credited with in last Saturday’s game were also a career-high.

UCLA

TJ Leaf

The 6-10 freshman forward has taken little time to get accustomed to the college game, scoring in double figures in each of UCLA’s first 11 games this year. Leaf has scored 20 points in five games, and has also recorded double-doubles in five games. Leaf is leading the Bruins with 18.3 points per game and 9.4 rebounds per game.

Bryce Alford

The son of UCLA head coach Steve Alford started out the season hot, scoring 30 points in the season-opener against Pacific. Alford is UCLA’s third-highest scorer this season, averaging 15.5 points per game. The Buckeyes will have to keep an eye on Alford from behind the arc, as the senior is shooting a career-high 40.6% from three-point range so far this season.

The Buckeyes were superior in every facet of the game as they scored a season-high.

Ohio State women’s basketball is now the proud owner of a four-game winning streak after cruising to a 118-61 victory over Alabama State on Friday night at Value City Arena in Columbus. The Buckeyes, ranked No. 12 in the country, now stand 9-3 on the season.

The Buckeyes had their full complement of players for the first time all season, as Linnae Harper, a transfer from Kentucky, made her debut in scarlet and gray. Stephanie Mavunga, who had missed the previous four games due to injury, was also back in the fold.

Kelsey Mitchell, who entered the night fifth in the nation in scoring, scored 15 points, one of seven Ohio State players in double figures. Mavunga had game-highs with 23 points and 13 rebounds, while Harper, Tori McCoy, Shayla Cooper, Kiara Lewis, and Sierra Calhoun all had at least 10.

The Hornets, conversely, had just two players in double figures, Danielle Clark and Daniele Ewert who each had 12. ASU shot a dismal 30 percent as a team and turned the ball over 31 times.

It was Calhoun who had the hot hand early, scoring seven points in the game’s first few minutes. Alabama State started just 2-for-10 from the floor, leading to a 12-5 Ohio State lead at the midpoint of the first quarter.

The Hornets, who fell to 1-7 on the year, turned the ball over 12 times in the opening frame, which the Buckeyes capitalized on to the tune of 18 points, en route to a 32-12 lead. Mitchell shot just 1-for-6 from the field in the quarter, but Harper filled the void alongside Calhoun with seven points.

The second quarter was more of the same, as Mitchell and McCoy, the reigning national freshman of the week, started heating up. McCoy had seven quick points in the period, and Mitchell put up 12 of her half-high 15, as every Ohio State player that attempted a field goal made one. Mavunga turned in 12 points and 10 rebounds, while Harper added 11 points as the team took a 70-27 lead to halftime.

Alabama State turned the ball over 22 times in the game’s first twenty minutes, which the Buckeyes cashed in for 34 points. Ohio State shot 56 percent from the floor, including a solid 8-for-19 from three-point range.

The nightmare didn’t end for the Hornets after halftime, as a 4-for-21 shooting performance in the third quarter helped the Buckeyes’ lead balloon to 96-40. Ohio State began to enforce its will in the paint, with Mavunga, McCoy, and Cooper all getting what they wanted inside.

The Buckeyes pushed out to their largest point total of the season, eclipsing the 113 they put up against LIU-Brooklyn before Thanksgiving.

This game was Ohio State’s final tuneup before hitting the road to take on Connecticut, the top-ranked team in the country, on Monday night in Storrs. The clash with the Huskies, who handed the Buckeyes a 100-56 loss a season ago in Columbus, will tip off at 7 p.m. ET, and will be televised live on CBS Sports Network.

LGHL D’Angelo Russell explains his ‘ice in the veins’ celebration

D’Angelo Russell explains his ‘ice in the veins’ celebration
Geoff Hammersley
via our friends at Land-Grant Holy Land
Visit their fantastic blog and read the full article (and so much more) here

usa_today_9667863.0.jpeg

The former Buckeye star’s father is to thank.

“[My dad] always said you have to be prepared for big moments, you gotta have ice in your veins. You have to have no feelings. You have to go out there and play your hardest and do what you do.”

– D’Angelo Russell to GQ’s Alex Wong on where the ‘Ice Water’ celebration came from

Since departing the Ohio State Buckeyes, D’Angelo Russell has become one of young, rising stars of the Los Angeles Lakers in the post-Kobe phase. Getting ready for the limelight wasn’t something Russell had to get used to; he was prepared for it.

In an article with GQ, Russell talked about the origins of his ‘ice in the veins’. The celebration took off after a 39-point outing in his rookie season, tying Elgin Baylor’s record for most points in a single game scored by a rookie.

After popping one his numerous shots, Russell came down the floor pointing to his veins. That video went viral, and a new celebration was formed. Russell credits his father for making him prepared for the big moments – and saying that young Russell needed to have ice in his veins. The preparedness payed off, as Russell surged onto the college basketball scene and quickly became one of the top picks in the 2015 NBA Draft.

Alex Wong’s article also touched on several other topics, including the first time Russell used the ‘ice in the veins’ celebration and life as a Laker.

“The 12 plays that shaped college football’s entire 2016 season... Week 13: Ohio State gets the Spot Heard ‘Round the World”

– Alex Kirshner, SB Nation

We have hit the point in time where the regular season of college football has been completed and the bowl games are beginning to kickoff. That doesn’t stop us from looking back at the many plays (and players) that shaped the 2016 college football season.

Alex Kirshner of SB Nation broke down his list – and a couple plays involved the Buckeyes. The first of the plays – I’m going to start with the bad one first, so bear with me – involves the special teams fiasco the Buckeyes had in State College, Penn. against Penn State in Week 8. A blocked field goal that was returned to the house gave Nittany Lions’ coach James Franklin his first signature win in Happy Valley, and propelled the PSU dream to claiming a Big Ten championship into reality – all of this while throwing writers, office water cooler talks and sports radio shows into a frenzy of determining ways the Big Ten East would be figured out.

The second of the moments are a lot better for Buckeye Nation: The Week 13 4th-and-1 gamble against Michigan. Still, there are arguments on whether or not the spot was right (actually, it was good), which later led to Ohio State running the ball into the endzone to punctuate another win against The School Up North and cementing themselves into the College Football Playoff.

"We kind of hit it right because a lot of those kids were ready to play when they got here,"

–Urban Meyer, as reported by Jim Naveau, The Lima News

Keeping things in the OSU football world, the rebound from the Penn State loss and the subsequent running of the table was something that seemed improbable. Just think about it: a huge group of underclassmen went through a schedule that included Oklahoma, Penn State, Wisconsin, Michigan and Michigan State, and finished the season with an 11-1 record.

While some of the student-athletes carried an underclassman tag, they played like veterans. Jim Naveau’s article details how Chris Worley, Sam Hubbard and Malik Hooker stepped up on the big stage, made big plays and played a part in Ohio State’s journey to their second CFP appearance.

Naveau reported that Meyer thought “next year’s the year,” however, here the Buckeyes are, just two wins away from another national championship. Even though the Buckeyes lost a handful of underclassmen last year to the NFL Draft, they reloaded (not rebuilded) into a playoff contender.

Just like in the D’Angelo piece above, being prepared has its positive consequences. Just like on the football field, preparedness has put the Buckeyes into the championship hunt in December.
