Fickell may not be setup for success at UC.

Fifteen years ago this week, Ocean’s Eleven hit theaters. Heavy on handsomeness, expensive clothing, and pay-attention-or-you’ll-miss-it wit, the widespread success of the film spawned a trilogy that banked over a billion dollars in worldwide revenue.

Aside from the film axiom that the first movie in a sequel or a trilogy is almost always the best of the bunch — The Empire Strikes Back, The Dark Knight, and The Godfather: Part II come to mind as exceptions — Eleven is the best of the Ocean’s trilogy because the prime members of the ensemble cast are each permitted to dive fully into their characters without the baggage that comes in the next two films. George Clooney can be deviously charming; Matt Damon can be destined-for-thievery-greatness but neurotic; and Elliott Gould can be unapologetically ‘Reuben.’

Another notable part of the film — aside from Mark Wahlberg turning down the part of Linus Caldwell (Damon’s role) — is the amount of ‘Hey, that’s that guy!’ moments, like Charlie Conway — err, Joshua Jackson — and Topher Grace (right?) appearing as their real selves in the beginning of the film.

Anyway, on to the rankings!

1. John Glenn

Life’s truly worth living if you do it anywhere close to how John Glenn did it:

  • Veteran of World War II and the Korean War, where he fought alongside Ted Williams.
  • Astronaut at age 38 (when he became the first American to orbit the Earth) and 77 (when he became the oldest person to fly in outer space).
  • U.S. Senator for nearly 25 years.
  • Ran for president.
  • A few years ago, the Columbus airport was renamed John Glenn Columbus International Airport.

A native Ohioan who became a great friend to Ohio State University, Glenn’s life is seemingly without parallel in recent American lore. I’ll never forget that one of my first assignments for The Lantern was to report on a meeting Glenn attended in downtown Columbus and to try to interview him afterward. Too much time has passed for me to remember the article’s subject, but after the meeting was over, I approached Mr. Glenn and asked if I could speak with him. I could not have been more nervous and awkward; he could not have been more warm and gracious.

Rest in peace, John Herschel Glenn.

2. Lamar Jackson

The Louisville quarterback’s star waned a bit over the season’s final weeks as his team went from playoff contender to 3-loss afterthought, but there was never really any doubt that Jackson was the sport’s top player in 2016. The true sophomore — yeah, he’s gonna get even better in 2017 — won his school’s first-ever Heisman Trophy on Saturday evening.

After scanning through cfbstats.com, I found some interesting tidbits (at least to me) about Jackson’s season:

  • Jackson finished second behind Texas Tech quarterback Patrick Mahomes II in total offense per game.
  • Jackson had 62 plays from scrimmage (rushing or receiving plays) where he gained 10+ yards. No other quarterback in college football had more than 46.
  • Jackson passed for 3,390 yards (12th in the nation) and 30 touchdowns (11th in the country). He rushed for 1,538 yards (eighth-best among all players) and 21 touchdowns (tied for fourth in the country).
  • Jackson completed a pass of at least 40 yards in eight of his team’s 12 games.
  • In five games this season, Jackson averaged at least nine yards per play.
3. Pat Elflein

The lowest-ranked member of Urban Meyer’s first recruiting class at Ohio State was awarded the Rimington Trophy as the nation’s most outstanding center Thursday evening, the Buckeyes’ first major individual accolade since Malcolm Jenkins won the Thorpe Award in 2008. Elflein was also a finalist for the Outland Trophy, given to the country’s top interior lineman (Alabama’s Cam Robinson won) and has recently been named to numerous All-American lists. Suffice to say, Elflein’s decision to come back for a fifth season and to move from guard to center has paid dividends.

A three-star recruit out of Pickerington North High School in Columbus, Elflein received 10 scholarship offers, though over half of them came from non-Power Five schools. After redshirting the 2012 campaign with a foot ailment, Elflein saw action in all 14 games in 2013 as a backup, but his welcome-to-the-big-leagues moment was when he replaced right guard Marcus Hall in the Michigan game after Hall was ejected for his participation in a second quarter brouhaha.

Eflein started for Hall in the Big Ten Championship game, and then made 28 consecutive starts at either left guard or right guard from 2014-15, garnering first team all-Big Ten honors in both seasons. With the Buckeyes losing three starters from the 2015 offensive line entering this fall, Elflein moved over to center to replace fellow Pickerington native Jacoby Boren.

Now, Elflein is the last man standing from Ohio State’s 2012 recruiting class, a group that was ranked No. 5 in the nation and included future NFLers Michael Thomas, Cardale Jones, Noah Spence, Taylor Decker, Joshua Perry, and Tyvis Powell.

4. Luke Fickell

It’s nice to see the 43-year-old Ohio State lifer get a real chance at a head coaching job with Cincinnati after he was dealt an impossible hand taking over at Ohio State on an interim basis in 2011.

I’m torn on whether I think Fickell is in a position to succeed with the Bearcats. The appeal of Fickell (hard-working, ace recruiter, no one knows Ohio better) works in direct contrast to the fair/unfair (depending on what you believe) accusations levied against Tuberville and why his regime failed at Cincinnati.

But I’m also worried that too much could be asked of Fickell at Cincinnati, a Group of Five school with Power Five ambitions. The university recently spent $86 million to renovate its pre-World War I football stadium in part because Cincinnati desperately wants to rejoin college football’s big leagues despite having finished third and fourth in the American’s Athletic Conference’s East division the past two seasons. And yet, in spite of the program’s recent regressions, expectations remain high thanks to the foundation laid by Mark Dantonio and the Big East titles won by Brian Kelly and Butch Jones.

I’m also torn on whether Kerry Coombs (who apparently isn’t going anywhere) would have been a net positive or net negative working under Fickell at Cincinnati. Coombs, whose deep Cincinnati connections are well-established at this point, would have been an incredible asset to Fickell in re-planting the Bearcats flag inside the I-275 belt, thereby lessening the influence of Michigan State, Kentucky, and other programs that have been poaching three and four-star recruits out of the city with alarming regularity. However, at the first sign of extended trouble, the sometimes-insular section of Cincinnati’s fan base — there are still plenty of Bearcats fans that yearn for the Bob Huggins era on the hardwood — would have rallied around Coombs and implored the native son to take the reins.

5. Additional coaching attrition

The possibility still exists that Fickell is just the first domino to fall from the ranks of Ohio State’s assistant coaches, even if the chances of that happening are lessening by the day. Coombs now appears likely to stay put, and the same could be said for co-defensive coordinator Greg Schiano, who was reportedly in contention for the Oregon and South Florida gigs, which went to Willie Taggert and (reportedly) Charlie Strong, respectively.

Still, offensive coordinator Ed Warinner is a possible fit at Western Kentucky, and there’s always room for the unexpected to occur.

Trevor Thompson has a career-night in bounce-back victory.

After an embarrassing loss to Florida Atlantic earlier in the week, the Ohio State Men’s Basketball team (8-2) got back in the win column with a 64-60 victory over the University of Connecticut (4-5). The game was back-and-forth for the majority of the night, but Ohio State used a career-night from sixth man Trevor Thompson and a significant advantage from the free-throw line to get one of their best wins of the young season.

The Buckeyes started strong, racing out to an early 13-6 lead over the Huskies. Point-guard JaQuan Lyle collected three assists by the under-16 timeout, however, the offense went cold as UConn tightened the score by the midway point of the first half.

Despite the Huskies committing eight turnovers in the first 13 minutes of the game, the Buckeyes were unable to capitalize, converting those TOs into only two points. UConn retook the lead, 19-18, with seven-minutes remaining in the half.

Part of the offensive problem was that Ohio State shooters were a combined 2-12 from behind the arc in the first half, while shooting 9-18 from two-point range. Throughout the non-conference section of the schedule, the Buckeyes have seen success with getting the ball inside, but they primarily stayed out of the lane in the game’s first 10 minutes.

The second 10 minutes of the game went back-and-forth, with six lead changes in the first half. With Ohio State leading 32-31 with time running out, UConn guard Jalen Adams hit a three to give the Huskies the halftime advantage.

At the break, Adams led all scorers with 13 points on 5-6 shooting from the field, however, he hit his first second-half bucket with 23 seconds left in the game. Ohio State was paced by center Trevor Thompson who had nine points and six rebounds off the bench in the first 20 minutes. Starter Micah Potter pulled in two board in six minutes before having to exit with two fouls.

The Huskies played without guard/forward Terry Larrier and guard Alterique Gilbert, who are both out for the season with injuries. Forward Juwan Durham also did not make the trip to Columbus as he is dealing with the flu.

Despite a missed three-pointer from Lyle to open the second half, Jae’Sean Tate took the ball on the second possession and drove to the lane before being fouled on the shot attempt. His two free throws ended a 10-0 UConn run that spanned the halves.

From there, UConn continued to maintain a thin lead until, with 9:59 left in the half, Thompson found Keita Bates-Diop under the basket for a layup to tie the game at 47.

Despite the tight game, UConn held a substantial advantage in terms of shooting. With under nine minutes remaining, the Huskies shot 55.6% from the field, compared to Ohio State’s 34. The difference in the game came from the free throw line, where OSU shot 26-34, and in the turnover margin, which Ohio State won 16-7.

Despite those advantages, Ohio State continued its icy streak from outside, going 0-6 from downtown in the second half. However, Thompson had a career-night racking up 17 points and 17 rebounds, both of which were career highs.

After Lyle stole the ball from Allen at mid-court, he missed the layup, and after the ball bounced around, Thompson came down with it as he was being fouled. He hit the subsequent free throws to give OSU the 56-54 lead with two minutes left in regulation; a lead they never relinquished.

As they have been throughout the season, the Buckeyes were fairly balanced on the stats sheets. In addition to Thompson’s 17, Lyle scored 16 points, Tate had 13, and Marc Loving contributed nine.

Ohio State returns to the hardwood next Saturday, December 17th in Las Vegas, NV against No. 2 UCLA. The game will tip at 3 p.m. EST on CBS.

Three things we learned:

1. The Buckeyes are not a great three-point shooting team. Coming into the game, Ohio State was shooting just 36.4% from behind the arc, which ranked them in a tie for 127th in country. Yet, early in the game the deep ball appeared to be the only shot that the Buckeyes were interested in taking.

Throughout the season, Ohio State has found success in transition and by getting the ball in the lane, but it took them nearly 10 minutes to remember that and finally abandoned the unsuccessful barrage from downtown. At the end of the first half, OSU had 16 of their 32 points in the paint, and only six from outside the arc.

While the re-hiring of OSU legend and renowned shooting-guru Chris Jent will likely have a longterm impact on Ohio State’s three-point shooting, it hasn’t yet. If this Ohio State team is ever going to find a successful identity, the stats suggest that it is much more likely to be in the paint than behind the arc.

2. The Buckeyes are becoming a decent free-throw shooting team. Over the last three seasons, Ohio State has been abysmal from the charity stripe. Since 2012-2013, the Buckeyes have ranked 206th, 229th, and 234th in free-throw shooting percentage nationally.

Believe it or not, on the young 2016-2017 season, they are even worse, ranking 313th shooting 63.1% coming into Saturday’s game. However, in three of the last four games there has been a marked and considerable improvement from the line. Against Virginia, the Bucks shot 11-13 (84.6%), against Florida Atlantic they shot 17-22 (77.3%), and against UConn, OSU was 26-34 (76.5%).

If Ohio State is able to consistently do what they do best from the floor and regularly work the ball inside, this should result in more opportunities to get to the line, especially in the physical Big Ten. To make the most of those opportunities, the Buckeyes will need to shoot better from the stripe, and even though years of data from the Thad Matta era might suggest otherwise, there is cause for optimism for the Buckeyes in this department.

3. It might be time to get Trevor Thompson back in the starting lineup. Nearly all Buckeye fans were surprised when Matta installed freshman Micah Potter as the OSU starting center in the season opener against Navy. The 6’9” Mentor native has shown flashes in the early season, both under the basket and behind the arc, but his productivity has been inconsistent.

Coming into Saturday’s matchup against UConn, he was averaging just 4.9 points and 3.8 rebounds per game. Seven-foot junior Trevor Thompson, on the other hand, averaged 10.3 points and 5.8 boards. Despite not starting, Thompson was averaging a little over two more minutes of playing time per game on the season.

Against UConn, Thompson went for the aforementioned double-double, while Potter was scoreless with three rebounds in 10 minutes on the floor.

While a strong sixth man can be a valuable tool for a basketball team, the statistical edge for Thompson is only part of the equation. As evidenced on Saturday night, all too often, Ohio State falls in love with the deep ball early. With Thompson in the starting lineup, there is a distinct possibility that his leadership and energy will keep the team focused on the gameplan of working inside-out.

Urban Meyer to keep his ‘right-hand man’, spurning Cincinnati.

With Ohio State co-defensive coordinator Luke Fickell being named the new head football coach at the University of Cincinnati, speculation has been running rampant that Ohio State cornerbacks coach and special teams coordinator Kerry Coombs would be joining him on the Bearcat staff.

However, on Saturday evening, Coombs released a statement that seemingly put those rumors to rest.

pic.twitter.com/bdsVl2lbcM

— Kerry Coombs (@OsuCoachCoombs) December 10, 2016

While the statement did not rule out a move for Coombs in the future, shortly thereafter, OSU head coach Urban Meyer followed Coombs’ statement up with a tweet of his own.

— Urban Meyer (@OSUCoachMeyer) December 10, 2016

It remains unclear if the “expanded coordinating role” means that Coombs will succeed Fickell as Greg Shiano’s co-defensive coordinator, but the move ensures that Ohio State will continue to have one of its most vital weapons in the all-important recruiting wars.

Before joining Meyer’s staff, Coombs spent five seasons at UC, including three as the associate head coach under Brian Kelly.

As soon as Meyer’s statement came out other members of the Ohio State coaching staff began reacting online.

The Buckeyes will have a tough task replacing their longest-tenured assistant coach.

The Buckeyes will need at least one new assistant coach, as Luke Fickell has taken the new head coaching gig at Cincinnati.

Replacing Fickell will be a tough job, as nobody will know Columbus and Ohio State quite like he did, given how long his Buckeye tenure was. In a replacement, Ohio State will likely look for a coach with ties to the midwest or Ohio State, experience recruiting at a high level, or producing quality defenses, especially at linebacker.

With that in mind, here’s a look at some names that Ohio State could potentially consider.

Paul Rhoads- Arkansas DB coach, former Iowa State head coach

Things didn’t work out at Iowa State like Rhoads had planned, but that doesn’t mean he doesn’t know defense. A former graduate assistant at Ohio State back in 1991, Rhoads led quality defensive units at Iowa State, Pittsburgh and Auburn, before coaching the Cyclones from 2009-2015. His background is more with the secondary than with linebackers, but he has ties all over the midwest and could step into a more senior role, especially with Schiano not likely to stay at Ohio State longterm. Plus, hiring defensive assistants at Arkansas has worked out okay for the Buckeyes before.

Billy Davis-Former Eagles DC

Davis hasn’t been in the college game for long time, not since a graduate assistant job with Michigan State back in 1991. But he did have a long career coaching defense in the NFL, including a three year stint as the Eagles defensive coordinator. He’s a former college teammate of Urban Meyer, and the two remain friends. He’s also already at Ohio State, as he’s been working as a Quality Control Analyst.

Charlie Strong-former Texas HC

Is this one particularly likely? Probably not, as Strong is the favorite to get the head coaching job at USF. If for some reason that falls through, Strong probably won’t be without a head coaching gig for long, but as Greg Schiano has proven, there are worse temporary gigs than working defense for Urban Meyer.

Strong was Meyer’s defensive coordinator and linebackers coach at Florida, can recruit at a very high level, and even has some experience near the region while at Louisville, along with deep ties to Florida. This isn’t likely, but it would be a huge home run.

Dean Hood-Former EKU HC

Hood, who currently coaches tight ends at Charlotte, has coached on the defensive side of the ball for most of his life. An Ohioan and former OWU defensive back, Hood has coached at Ohio, EKU, and Wake Forest. He’s also a longtime friend of Urban Meyer.

Marcus Freeman-Purdue LB Coach

You probably remember Freeman from his playing days at Ohio State, and in the NFL. After a standout career at Ohio State and a short stint as a pro, he took a graduate assistant gig at Kent State, and has been coaching linebackers at Purdue for the last few seasons. Freeman is younger, but shows some potential as a coach.

Matt Pawlowski-Miami (OH) LB Coach/DC

This might be a bit of an outside the box hire, as Pawlowski doesn’t have Ohio State or Urban Meyer ties. But he has been coaching in the Buckeye State for a long time, with stints at Ohio, Ashland, Marietta and others. A Cleveland native, Pawlowski’s Miami defense improved dramatically over the year, cracking the top 30 in total defense.

Gifts Good, Bad, Birthday, Christmas, etc.

So earlier tonight I'm watching TV with the fam, when one of the cats jumps up on my chest looking for some lovin'. Cat presents head and paws to me, which means my wife gets a big face full of cat butthole. My wife mentions Twinkle Tush, which is an actual product that clips on your cats' tail and hides that unsightly butthole with some bling.

Yeah. This is a real product. I Googled it.

Anyway, in that moment ... I was just trying to watch Iron Man 2 and pet the cat when the wife starts talking about butthole jewelry and Christmas.

It was a good thing I paused the DVR and asked for clarification since I'd missed the lead sentence from her about getting butthole jewelry for the cats. Otherwise that would've been a really awkward Christmas. Actually, that would've been an awkward trip to Dunkins.

You're the best. Now I know what to get my annoying sister and her annoying cats for Christmas. $5.99? Done deal.

The longtime Buckeyes assistant will replace Tommy Tuberville.

After 15 consecutive seasons coaching in Columbus, Luke Fickell is finally flying the coop.

Per ESPN’s Adam Rittenberg, Fickell will be Cincinnati’s next head coach. Rittenberg reports that sources have told the network that UC and Fickell reached an agreement on Friday night, and that an official announcement is forthcoming.

There has been no word yet on if Fickell will remain with the Buckeyes throughout their upcoming playoff run.

Fickell, 43, has been an Ohio State assistant since 2002. The Columbus native has spent the past five seasons as co-defensive coordinator/linebackers coach under Urban Meyer, a duty he also fulfilled for Jim Tressel from 2005-11. Following Tressel’s resignation in May 2011, Fickell was named the Buckeyes interim coach and directed the Scarlet and Gray to a 6-7 record in his lone season at the helm.

On Wednesday, multiple reports indicated that Fickell had become a serious candidate to replace Tommy Tuberville at Cincinnati. (Late last month, Fickell had reportedly become an object of Florida Atlantic’s desire.) Tuberville went 29-22 in his four seasons heading the Bearcats, but he stepped down on Sunday following a 4-8 record this fall, the first time the program had failed to qualify for a bowl game since 2010.

Fickell, a four-year starter at nose tackle for Ohio State from 1992-96, was a graduate assistant for John Cooper in 1999 before leaving to be Akron’s defensive line coach for two seasons. In 2002, Fickell returned to Columbus to be the program’s special teams coordinator, a position he held for two years before being moved to linebackers coach in 2004.

Kerry Coombs, Ohio State’s cornerbacks coach and special teams coordinator, had also been floated as a possibility for the Cincinnati job. Coombs, formerly an extremely successful high school coach in his native Cincinnati, was a Bearcats assistant from 2007-11. Some have speculated that Coombs could possibly accompany Fickell to Cincinnati and serve as defensive coordinator. Coombs’ son, Brayden, is a Bengals assistant, and he has other family in the area.

We’ll have more as this develops. Congrats to Coach Fickell on his promotion!

The direction of the Buckeyes’ season may well be defined against the Huskies.

Season-defining games are generally reserved for the dog days of conference play in February and for March Madness, but for Ohio State basketball, Saturday’s matchup with Connecticut feels like a tipping point.

The Buckeyes are fresh off a seven-day stretch in which they blew a double-digit halftime lead on the road in a two-point loss to Virginia, escaped with a win against a Fairleigh Dickinson team barely ranked among the top 300 in the country according to KenPom, and then squandered another sizable lead at home to Florida Atlantic in a two-point overtime defeat.

Something is clearly not right with Ohio State.

“I feel like when we do bring the energy, we are a completely different team than when we don’t,” said junior Jae’Sean Tate after the loss to FAU.

The lack of energy from a major conference college basketball program is concerning, and a reason why head coach Thad Matta’s seat is heating up. Were it an isolated incident, one might be able to write it off to a rough stretch, but this issue has popped up repeatedly over the past few seasons.

“We let everything affect us, and they outplayed us, there’s no question about that,” Matta said after Tuesday night’s loss. “When things happen we have to be tougher and say ‘we can defy this.’”

Now in his 13th year at the helm for the Buckeyes, Matta has guided the program to Big Ten titles, final fours, and a national championship game appearance, but hasn’t gotten as far as the second weekend of the NCAA tournament since 2013. On-court performance may be in the hands of the program’s players, but at some point the lack of development, toughness, and execution must come back to the coaching staff.

This isn’t a #FireThad column. This is only to point out that Saturday at Value City Arena, Ohio State will play a game that has the potential to determine the rest of its season, for the better or for the worse.

On the opposite bench, UConn head coach Kevin Ollie knows all too well what Matta is going through. In his fifth year in Storrs, Ollie has the 2014 national championship on his coaching resume, as well as two Big East titles as a player for the Huskies and a 13-year NBA career. Yet, after early season losses to Wagner and Northeastern and a two-point win over Boston University, questions began to arise concerning his job security.

Connecticut may have already played its season-defining game, outlasting Syracuse 52-50 in a defensive slugfest on Monday night inside Madison Square Garden. The Huskies now stand at 4-4 on the year, and despite having endured a rash of injuries, have a little momentum on their side.

Numbers to know

314

Of the 351 NCAA Division I basketball programs, Ohio State ranks 314th in free throw percentage. The Buckeyes have a 63.1 percent success rate as a team and have only one regular rotation player (Kam Williams) hitting on better than 74 percent of his attempts.

UConn is actually worse, shooting 61.2 percent from the line, good for 332nd nationally.

In the second half against FAU, Ohio State went 8-for-13 from the charity stripe. Those missed opportunities may not have been the sole reason for the loss, but they certainly didn’t help matters. In close games, free throws are hugely important, and the Buckeyes inability to convert may come back to bite them again.

6

Among the nine players receiving regular rotation minutes for Ohio State, six are averaging double figures in scoring, led by Tate’s 14 points per game. Few teams in college basketball can rival that sort of offensive parity, and the Buckeyes have proven that they’re at their best when multiple options have it going on that side of the ball.

Ohio State has also had six different players record double-doubles through the team’s first nine games, which is tops in college basketball. UConn has a negative rebounding differential on the year, so crashing the glass should be a focus for the Buckeyes.

37

According to KenPom, Connecticut is 37th in the country in defensive efficiency. Ohio State ranks 23rd in this metric, which means viewers could be in for a not so pretty, grind it out kind of game on Saturday.

The Buckeyes are 20th in the country in field goal defense, holding their opposition to just 37.3 percent shooting from the floor. At 42.6 percent offensively, the Huskies rank 256th nationally, giving the scarlet and gray a seemingly distinct advantage on paper.

Cast of characters

Ohio State

Jae’Sean Tate

The national treasure not only leads Ohio State with his 14 points per game, but also with 7.8 rebounds a night despite his undersized 6-foot-4 frame. A junior, Tate has been the unquestioned heart of the Buckeye program the past two seasons, and his grit and tenacity are what his teammates should be emulating. The Pickerington native has three double-doubles already this season, and his energy has never been a question.

Keita Bates-Diop

After sitting out five games with an ankle injury, Bates-Diop was back on the floor for 20 minutes against FAU. While he scored 10 points and grabbed three rebounds, it was apparent there was some rust to be shaken off from the absence. KBD showed flashes before the injury of being capable of impacting the game in a multitude of ways both offensively and defensively, and the Buckeyes certainly need that if they hope to start turning things around.

Connecticut

Jalen Adams

A blue-chip recruit who averaged a little over seven points per game as a freshman a year ago, Adams has emerged as UConn’s top offensive threat in his second season. Averaging team-highs of 17.8 points and 5.6 assists to go along with 5.3 rebounds and 1.4 steals per game, the 6-foot-3 guard does a little bit of everything for the Huskies. Slowing Adams down could be the difference between a win and a loss for Ohio State on Saturday.

Rodney Purvis

Connecticut’s leading scorer last season after transferring from N.C. State, Purvis, much like Adams, impacts the game in a variety of ways for Ollie. The 6-foot-4 redshirt senior averages 12.5 points, 4.5 rebounds, and a little over three assists a night. In last season’s 75-55 Huskies’ win over Ohio State in Storrs, Purvis put up 13 points, six boards, and five assists to lead a balanced attack.
