A storied career comes to a close.

In a predicable move, Ohio State middle linebacker Raekwon McMillan declared for the 2017 NFL Draft on Wednesday. The junior announced his decision on Twitter.

A former five-star recruit who was the nation’s top-ranked middle linebacker as a high school senior, the Georgia native enrolled at Ohio State in January 2014 with sky-high expectations. Three years later, McMillan leaves Columbus as a two-time first team All-Big Ten selection, an All-American, and a national champion who twice led the Buckeyes in tackles.

Hype fulfilled.

As a freshman on the 2014 national championship team, McMillan — whose awesome first name comes the Wu-Tang Clan rapper with the same moniker — played in a timeshare with senior Curtis Grant at middle linebacker. McMillan out-snapped Grant on defense in nine of the team’s 15 games, collecting freshman All-American honors from three different media outlets after he logged 54 tackles (2.5 for loss) and 2.5 sacks.

In 2015, McMillan led Ohio State in tackles seven different times and finished with a team-high 119 stops (4 TFL). He was on the field for nearly 900 snaps.

This past season, McMillan had 102 tackles (7 TFL), 19 more than any other Buckeye. McMillan really showed out to end the season, tallying 16 tackles against Michigan and 15 stops opposite Clemson. Six separate media outlets named McMillan to their second team All-American list.

McMillan is widely expected to be selected within the draft’s first two rounds.

LGHL Clemson exposed Ohio State’s offensive weaknesses in the Fiesta Bowl

Urban Meyer has already begun to make changes.

In almost all of Urban Meyer’s six losses at Ohio State, the offense has taken the majority of the blame for those blemishes — and rightfully so.

With just about a month to prepare for the Clemson Tigers, Urban Meyer talked about fixing the anemic passing game and finding a balance between the run and the pass. But after back-to-back three-and-outs to start the game (the second drive starting at the Clemson 33-yard line), it was clear that the team was unprepared, the offense did not improve over the layoff and the inconsistent offensive line stood no match for Clemson’s athletic and talented defensive line. For the first time since Jim Tressel’s Buckeyes fell to Meyer’s Florida Gators, it looked like the Buckeyes did not belong on the same field as their opponent.

Here is how Clemson exposed Ohio State’s biggest weaknesses on New Year’s Eve:

Out coached

In those six losses that Meyer has had at Ohio State, the offensive coaching staff has received the brunt of the criticism. We can go through all of the losses individually, but I think we know them by now. What is extremely alarming is that it looks like the players are seeing the same issues as the fans, and were not happy with the decision making or play calls. We all remember Ezekiel Elliott torching the play calling before declaring for the NFL Draft after barely touching the ball in their loss against Michigan State, and then former quarterback Cardale Jones -- who played under the same coaching staff last season -- voiced his opinions on Twitter during the game.

Stop all these "JT trash" tweets, when I started last season & we struggled, it was "Cardale trash we want JT"it ain't the QB ☕

— Cardale Jones (@Cardale7_) January 1, 2017

One would have to believe that current players felt a similar sentiment re: Ed Warinner and Tim Beck, which is why the two changes occurred on Tuesday and there could be more coming down the line. Warinner and Beck seem to be well respected by Meyer, but the lack of new ideas, lack of creativity in play calling and the steep regression of J.T. Barrett has cost this group a chance of a possible three-peat and cost them their positions on the coaching staff.

Stepping away from the play calling and the guys who call the shots, two other coaches need to be on the hot seat. After developing guys like Mike Thomas, Braxton Miller and Jalin Marshall into NFL wide receivers, the receiving corps was a gigantic issue all season. Noah Brown disappeared after physically dominating Oklahoma, Parris Campbell, Terry McLaurin and James Clark never developed into consistent perimeter threats and freshmen Binjimen Victor and Alex Mack were not given a true chance to overtake the veterans. The lack of separation is on coaching, while the abundance of drops are a mental thing with the player — which could also be traced back to preparation. Smith seems like one of the more well-liked positional coaches on the team, but the lack of development in 2016 really burned the passing game.

It’s hard to put Greg Studrawa on the hot seat when he’s only been at Ohio State for one season, but it’s safe say Ohio State’s offensive line regressed in 2016. It could be an talent issue, but with multiple four stars on the two-deep, it’s easy to look at Studrawa and the lack of development. A great example of this is when true freshman Michael Jordan went out early with an ankle injury and Demetrius Knox (the fifth ranked guard recruit in the 2014 class) came in and did not look like he was prepared to be in the game. In the three games that Ohio State played an above average to great defensive line, the offensive line got flat out exposed. Keeping Warinner on staff as the offensive line coach and moving Studrawa to a consulting role wouldn’t be the worst move at this point. Warinner has developed unheralded guys in the past, coached up the dominant 2014 offensive line and seems like a vital part of Urban Meyer’s coaching staff to keep around.

C1C4h5yUAAAb4y6.jpg

J.T. Barrett’s regression

When J.T. Barrett replaced an injured Braxton Miller as the starting quarterback in 2014, his scouting report was based on the fact that he was accurate throwing the football and he was cool and calm in the pocket. Before breaking his ankle against Michigan, Barrett was seen as a Heisman finalist snub, since he put up arguably the best statistical season by an Ohio State quarterback, ever. He completed 64.6 percent of his passes, threw for 34 touchdowns and added another 11 touchdowns and 938 yards on the ground. He was always in control of the situation and it looked like Ohio State was set at the position for years to come.

After getting beaten out by Cardale Jones prior to the 2015 campaign — a competition in which the coaching staff did not handle correctly whatsoever — it was okay to give Barrett a pass on a pretty average season, where the staff decided to shuffle the two in-and-out throughout the season.

In 2016, the staff gave Barrett the keys to the offense and elected him captain for the second year in a row. From a statistical standpoint, he had a pretty good season (24 touchdowns to 7 interceptions) throwing the ball, even though the completion percentage fell to 61.5 percent. His accuracy on short to intermediate passes became erratic and he was constantly late on crossing patterns, resulting in incomplete passes on simple throws that should have moved the chains. His inaccuracy on intermediate throws then led to a complete lack of confidence on deep throws, where he constantly overthrew open targets on plays that should have resulted in six points. Even though Barrett has remained calm in the pocket, he has a tendency to hold onto the football for too long, which has led to a handful of sacks.

Barrett’s confidence is completely shot at this point and one of the coolest quarterbacks in college football just two seasons ago should now face an open competition next season against his three talented backups, but we all know that most likely won’t happen.

***

Overall, Ohio State’s offense was thoroughly embarrassed and exposed against Clemson and a giant ripple effect has already ripped through that side of the ball. With the talent in this program, it is unacceptable to lack execution to that degree and be out coached with such severity in a playoff game. With changes already occurring, Clemson’s domination already looks like a blessing in disguise.

Even better, Okudah went up against a Michigan commit and intercepted a pass.

With the Army All-American Game practices in full swing, a slew of Ohio State commits and targets have taken center stage to show off their ability and update the media on their recruitments.

Five-star defensive back Jeffrey Okudah (Grand Prairie, TX / South Grand Prairie) has been impressive over the last several days and mentioned Ohio State, Oklahoma and Florida State as his final three as he heads into his decision during the game on Jan. 7. Though Okudah talked up all three programs yesterday, there is a lot of confidence that the Texas native will end up going to Columbus, Ohio. The 247sports crystal ball predictions come in with an astounding 94 percent of experts believing that Okudah will become a Buckeye.

As for practice, Okudah once again stood out, especially in one-on-ones. Here’s footage from yesterday as he went up against Michigan commit Tarik Black.

It was a short workout for the All-Americans on Tuesday. You can expect practice to get ramped up again today.

New coach, no problems

With news of quarterbacks coach and ace recruiter Tim Beck moving on to Texas, questions began to raise about if the coaching move will effect Ohio State’s current commits from the Lone Star State. As for five-star linebacker Baron Browning, there is no concern as he stated he was expecting this move to happen. In addition, there is no worry about Ohio State’s chances to hold onto running back J.K. Dobbins.

Baron Browning on Tim Beck, there's no concern: "I knew he was leaving and I wish him the best. He's a great guy."

— Jeremy Birmingham (@Birm) January 3, 2017

Rivals.com’s Marc Givler spoke with highly touted defensive back and Buckeye commit Shaun Wade (Jacksonville, FL / Trinity Christian Academy) yesterday and Wade made it apparent that Browning and Tate Martell will be his future roommates in Columbus. However, the fourth is a player that he stated he was not allowed to name yet. Though there’s a ton of speculation who this might be, the hot pick is California cornerback Darnay Holmes. Holmes is an expected early enrollee and has plans to announce his collegiate choice this coming Saturday.

The Buckeyes overcame a late surge by the Wildcats to start the Big Ten season off 2-0.

Ohio State women’s basketball improved to 2-0 in Big Ten play with a 94-87 win over a scrappy Northwestern team on Tuesday night. The victory did not come easy, but avenged last season’s 86-82 upset loss at Welsh-Ryan Arena in Evanston.

An 11-2 run late by Northwestern made it a nailbiter, but Ohio State had just enough to hold on, icing the game with free throws.

The Buckeyes, ranked 11th in the country in the most recent AP poll, were led, as is usually the case, by Kelsey Mitchell. The All-American scored 33 points and dished out seven assists as Ohio State had five players in double figures.

Nia Coffey had 22 points and 11 boards for her ninth double-double of the season, Ashley Deary added 10 points, 14 assists, and six steals, and freshman Abi Scheid scored a career-high 20 for the Wildcats.

Less than a minute into the game, Deary intercepted a baseline pass to become the all-time career steals leader in Big Ten history. It was part of a frenetic beginning to the game that saw the two sides flying up and down the court in the first four minutes.

Sierra Calhoun knocked down three triples from the same spot on the left elbow to spark a 16-9 Ohio State lead during that span. The Buckeyes started out 7-for-10 from deep in the first quarter. Asia Doss knocked down a pair, and Mitchell and Linnae Harper each had one apiece.

Northwestern kept pace, though, making five out of nine from three-point range and forcing six turnovers, to limit Ohio State to a 31-28 lead.

The pace slowed, if only slightly, in the second frame, and a pair of deep threes from the top of the key by Mitchell gave the Buckeyes a 43-36 lead just beyond the midway point.

Coffey used her diverse inside-outside skillset to score eight in the quarter to keep the Wildcats in contact. The senior’s 13 points and six rebounds paced Northwestern, which also got 10 from Christen Inman.

Ohio State got 15 from Mitchell and 11 from Calhoun in the first twenty minutes to lead the way. But it was a three-pointer and dribble drive layup from Kiara Lewis, a steal by Harper, and an and-one for Tori McCoy to close out the half on a 10-2 run that gave the Buckeyes a 54-42 lead at the half.

Scheid started the second half on fire, knocking down three early field goals, including two from deep, as the lead was cut to 56-53. Of more concern to Ohio State fans, though, was a hard fall taken by Mitchell after appearing to take an inadvertent elbow from Coffey, which sent her to the bench.

Things got chippy between the teams after that, and a couple of fifty-fifty calls benefiting Northwestern led to Buckeye head coach Kevin McGuff getting assessed a technical foul. After Inman connected on the free throw, Ohio State’s lead was just 58-56.

A big sigh of relief came next for the scarlet and gray, though, with Mitchell returning to the court and abruptly knocking down a rainbow three from the left elbow and dropping her fifth dime of the game to McCoy for an easy lay-in.

That performance from Mitchell sparked a 10-3 run for the Buckeyes, but Scheid hit her fourth three-pointer and a pair of free throws to bring it to a halt and send the game to the final quarter with Ohio State ahead just 68-63.

Doss hit a corner three to start the fourth, and a gliding transition layup from Mitchell pushed the lead out to 75-66, prompting a Wildcat timeout.

Northwestern refused to go away, though, as Deary continued to catalyze the offense with her defensive thefts. The lead was cut to 77-73 before Mitchell did what she does and took over. A deep three-pointer was followed by another transition layup, and Harper came up with another key steal and layup of her own.

Mitchell sank a pair of free throws with three and a half minutes remaining, capping a 9-0 run that extended the lead to 86-73. The Buckeyes held on from there, if only barely, to escape with the win, as the Wildcats mounted a furious comeback behind Deary and Coffey.

Ohio State will play its first home game of the conference schedule on Saturday when Michigan visits Columbus. Tipoff is set for noon, and the game will be televised live on Big Ten Network.

Urban Meyer’s remedy for the Buckeyes’ struggles with the forward pass is not without controversy.

Urban Meyer may have hit a home run with his hire to fix Ohio State’s beleaguered passing game, but his latest coaching appointment doubles as a controversial selection.

Per Bruce Feldman, and as first reported by our sister site, The Crimson Quarry, former Indiana head coach Kevin Wilson is expected to be Ohio State’s new offensive coordinator. It’s not immediately clear what impact this would have on Ohio State’s current offensive coordinator, Ed Warinner.

Tim Beck, the Buckeyes’ co-offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach from 2015-16, recently left to join former Ohio State OC Tom Herman’s staff at Texas. Soon thereafter, Ryan Day was announced as the Buckeyes’ new quarterbacks coach.

Meyer will and should get scrutiny for bringing Wilson aboard, given the latter’s abrupt and controversial exit from Indiana. Wilson resigned from his post on Dec. 1, with Hoosiers athletic director Fred Glass failing to elaborate on the sudden news aside from noting “philosophical differences” between Wilson and the athletic department.

In days following Wilson’s ouster, The Indianapolis Star reported that following a complaint by the father of a former Indiana player, the IU athletic department commissioned an external investigation into allegations of player abuse and the possible creation of an “unhealthy environment for injured players” by Wilson and his staff. A second and separate investigation was later conducted in November 2016. Glass would not elaborate on the second inquiry, but did admit it factored into Wilson’s dismissal.

A report from ESPN revealed that several other former Indiana players (or their parents) were unhappy with Wilson’s handling of injured players. It should also be noted that former and current Hoosiers were supportive of Wilson.

Wilson, who went 26-47 (12-37 Big Ten) at Indiana, was awarded with a new six-year contract following the 2015 season after he led the Hoosiers to their first bowl game since 2007.

Prior to his time at IU, Wilson was the offensive coordinator at Oklahoma from 2006-10. Wilson’s rise to coaching stardom was largely tied to the development of quarterbacks Sam Bradford and Landry Jones, and he garnered the Broyles Award (given to the nation’s top assistant coach) in 2008 after the Bradford-led Sooners broke NCAA records for consecutive 60-point games (five) and total points in a season (716). The Sooners lost the 2009 BCS title game to Meyer’s Florida Gators.

Ohio State has had success bringing aboard assistants with controversial pasts, like Greg Schiano, and Wilson’s work at Indiana and Oklahoma suggests he should be able to work wonders with Ohio State’s personnel. But Wilson, and ultimately Meyer, should also clearly speak as to what happened at Indiana, and what protocols are in place to make sure something similar won’t happen at Ohio State.

While the game itself was excruciating, the resulting implications could help the Buckeyes in the long term.

“Ohio State is not used to this. I’m not used to this, and we will not get used to this. That’s not going to happen again.”

-Urban Meyer, via Ben Axelrod, Land of 10

Ohio State’s 31-point loss to Clemson didn’t have many bright spots for the Buckeyes. The offense was anemic, with J.T. Barrett passing for just 127 yards on the night. The entire team managed just 88 rushing yards, despite averaging 258 per game entering Saturday’s matchup. The kicking game was a nightmare and the defense was on the field for nearly 36 minutes. It was the worst loss of Urban Meyer’s career--at Ohio State and otherwise. And it was the second-straight shutout for the Big Ten in the last two College Football Playoffs.

So where is the silver lining? With this year’s Fiesta Bowl loss, the 2016 season now looks very similar to Urban Meyer’s second season at Ohio State in 2013, in which Braxton Miller led the Buckeyes to an undefeated regular season before two straight losses in the Big Ten Championship game to Michigan State and in the Orange Bowl to Clemson. As the Buckeyes ended the season with two losses, it became clear that the status quo under which Ohio State had been operating was not sufficient. The defense in general and the secondary in particular had gaping deficiencies which were not addressed during the regular season. The Buckeyes had finished the season ranked 110th nationally in passing defense. After the season, Meyer shored up the secondary, bringing in Chris Ash from Arkansas to replace Everett Withers. The resulting change produced a strong culture on defense that, even with the loss of Ash this season to Rutgers, has continued throughout this year.

Now, however, the issues are on the other side of the ball, as Tom Herman’s departure to Houston has left the offense floundering--an problem that was evident even last season. While there were some bright moments for Barrett and the offense, such as their twin, 59-point wins over Nebraska and Maryland, Barrett never seemed to find a complete rhythm over the duration of the season, Curtis Samuel didn’t get the ball enough and Mike Weber, while still a great running back, was not a sure replacement for Ezekiel Elliott. The offensive line, even with two veterans in Billy Price and Pat Elflein, was inconsistent. Meyer now has the opportunity, just as in 2013, to shake up his coaching staff and get the offense back on track.

We’ve already seen some coaching changes. Perhaps the Buckeyes can produce a similar result come next year.

“Even when I was coming back and starting to get healthy, why would you try something different if he has made every kick? I felt the same way. Tyler was doing that well, so for me, I was kind of just looking forward to being ready in case something happened to him.”

Entering this season, as so many new faces made their appearance on the Ohio State depth chart, there was little question as to who would be kicking for the Buckeyes, as Sean Nuernberger was the only kicker on scholarship in August. In 2015, Nuernberger split time with senior kicker Jack Willoughby, and only attempted four field goals on the season. Still, he was the only kicker on the roster who had seen playing time. However, with a groin injury for Nuernberger sustained during fall camp, kicking duties suddenly fell to senior walk on Tyler Durbin, who had only begun to play football in the last two years. Though Nuernberger’s injury required time to heal, by the time he was ready to get back on the field, Durbin had gotten into a good rhythm on special teams. Even Nuernberger agreed with Meyer’s decision to keep the walk on as the starter.

Overall, Durbin’s first season as a starter was a good one. Entering the final game of the regular season against Michigan, Durbin was perfect on field goals--the exception being a blocked attempt against Penn State--and was 60-of-62 on extra points. And against Michigan, when Durbin was widely critiqued for missing two field goal attempts, he did hit the tying score which sent the game to overtime.

Next season, with Durbin graduating, Nuernberger is once again the expected starter heading into 2017. While Nuernberger said that he had his best offseason ever last year, he acknowledged that he will have to build up trust with his team once again, not having kicked with them for an entire season. With true freshman kicker Blake Haubeil joining the team next season, Nuernberger will need to be healthy and ready to compete for his own starting role come next fall.

“You can’t put a price tag on it. He’ll forever be, not just in Ohio State history, he’ll be one of the most successful college football players of all time.”

Quarterback J.T. Barrett hasn’t put much consideration into entering the NFL Draft in April, thereby foregoing his final year of eligibility at Ohio State, but it would seem that he is leaning toward remaining in Columbus, saying after the game that “it will be really hard for me to walk away when we just lost 31-0.” He was sacked three times and was picked off twice Saturday--certainly not the way Barrett would choose to end his prolific career with the Buckeyes.

Currently, Barrett is not projected to get drafted should he choose to leave Ohio State. Analysts cite that he has seemed to have “regressed as a thrower,” with his completion percentage dropping since last season. And, leader though he is on the field, he does not project confidence as a passer. At 6-foot-1, 223-pounds, and with a 4.5 second 40-yard dash, Barrett is mediocre on his measurables, but similar to Russell Wilson, who has obviously worked out for the Seahawks. Unfortunately, his mediocre passing, especially this season, have not leant much confidence in his arm either. Assuming he does get drafted, he would be a likely late round pick, and would be relegated to a backup role at best.

Meyer has expressed the need for the Buckeyes to once again become a good passing team, a need which became abundantly clear as Ohio State finished ranked 82nd nationally in passing offense. Should Barrett return to Columbus, it would likely be in a much more friendly offensive scheme.

If Barrett stays at Ohio State, he could break Art Schlichter’s career win record, and conceivably hold the top spot in every major passing and scoring statistic for the Buckeyes. That type of reputation could pay dividends for life after football, if an NFL career did not ultimately pan out, in the form of endorsements, building his personal brand and, potentially, job prospects.
