WNBA

Not certain what's true anymore, as keep hearing conflicting stuff about WNBA. Watched some games, and it appears that the officiating has picked up, actually making correct calls, etc. Have never heard about 'Defensive 3 seconds'? What is this? CC quitting the league, and going to Europe, along with Sophie? PS, anyone want to give me $50 mil to put a sticker on my car and jersey?

People to Punch, Pet Peeves, and General Vexations (mega-merge)

My wife would choose eradicating spiders over cancer lol. Which is funny considering where we live.
Ever since I was a kid I found it disturbing to kill things, even insects, for fun. I once hit a kid in the face when I was 8-9 for stomping a rollie pollie for no reason. Flies and roaches are fair game though once they enter the house. Spiders live in corners, cracks and crevasses and do nothing but good. Some look scary though.

Favorite 80's sitcom

I didn't watch too much TV in the ai80's. I can only name a few sitcoms because i saw them at friend's house. But as a gen x kid who lived the gen x meme in the 70's, drinking from hoses, playing outside until the street lights came on, the one show that we all watched together as a family was Kolchak The Night Stalker. I can still remember playing outside and my mother calling from the front door to come in, Kolchak was on. Another family memory was watching The Little Rascals and The Three Stooges on UHF, channel 52.

The Columbus Dispatch sends strong message on Ohio State's Brian Hartline, Matt Patricia after Texas win

The Ohio State Buckeyes accomplished every mission they aimed to against the Texas Longhorns during their 14-7 Week 1 victory at the "Shoe" on Saturday.

As The Columbus Dispatch's Brian Hedger noted, OSU's play-callers on both ends of the ball, offensive coordinator Brian Hartline and defensive coordinator Matt Patricia, were able to slow the game down exactly as they envisioned.

The great Woody Hayes' name was evoked, with Hedger believing the 205–61–10 Buckeyes head coach would've loved OSU's performance against Texas.

"It wasn't pretty by the modern standards of college football, but No. 3 Ohio State's gritty 14-7 toppling of the No. 1 ranked Texas Longhorns in a pageantry-filled opener Aug. 30 at Ohio Stadium was something for purists to savor," Hedger wrote.

"Woody Hayes would've loved this one.

"Anyway, there wasn't a lot of offense, and that was A-OK by Ohio State. That's largely how the Buckeyes' coaching staff drew up its game plan against the Longhorns. Gritty and tough, like overcooked steak, was the point."

Hartline and Patricia earned their keep on Ryan Day's staff with the win against the Longhorns. ESPN's Bill Connelly sent a warning before the season that the two needed to justify their salaries and seats.

"In terms of raw recruiting rankings, Ohio State is going to have more talent than every team on its regular-season schedule except maybe Texas in Week 1. (The Buckeyes will have more than almost anyone they might play in the CFP, too.) In Jeremiah Smith and Caleb Downs, the Buckeyes might have the best offensive and defensive players in the country. Talent wins, and Ohio State will win a lot this season. But at some point, two new coordinators will be asked to earn their salaries," Connelly wrote.

"On offense, Ryan Day is handing the reins to Brian Hartline, who served as coordinator -- with Day still calling plays -- in 2023 when the Buckeyes crashed to 34th in offensive SP+. When Day decided to give up playcalling, he brought in Chip Kelly to take the job and won a national title with him. With Kelly off to the Las Vegas Raiders, it is Hartline's turn again. We'll have no idea if he's ready to be a master playcaller until we see him calling plays. And when Jim Knowles left for Penn State, Day replaced him with Matt Patricia. As I wrote in my Big Ten preview, 'he has loads of NFL experience and was mentored by Bill Belichick, but the last time he performed well in any capacity (from a statistical standpoint) was 2016.' Is he ready?"

So far, so good.

RB James Peoples (National Champion)

Not as bad as I expected. Seemed a bit hesitant a few times and choose safe options over a few cutbacks or bounces that could’ve lost yards.

Still showed impressive burst a few times. Hard to judge based just on this game. Zeke didn’t have over 60 yards until his 4th game, so I hope he gets plenty of time to adjust and get comfortable.
Yeah, I see one obvious bad read (0:59 mark) and a couple less than optimal reads in there (last couple runs in the clip). But you can also see the explosiveness and shiftiness in there (e.g., at the 0:28 mark). The Texas defense was fast to attack the ball and he was facing an 8 man box through much of the day - by design just not a lot of wiggle room in the running game.

Miami (FL) Hurricanes (1926-2003)

The only thing that kept that "revamped" defense from getting shredded last night was a very pedestrian ND offense.

"we're back"... :slappy:

ok
Florida, FSU and SMU are on paper the hardest teams on their schedule, but we all know this is Miami and Cristobal. They could just as easily lose to almost anyone on their schedule

S Caleb Downs, Captain (All B1G, All-American, National Champion)

After the re-watch, this is just an incredibly smart, instinctive football player. Getting guys lined up, making plays, literally total control of game situations.
Downs is professional in everything that he does. From the on-field corrections he was making for Devin Sanchez to the game-sealing tackle, he is both a coach and elite player at the same time.

LB Alex “Sonny” Styles, Block 'O' (National Champion)

I was excited when he was recruited and came to Ohio State due to the family connection and high school videos. He has become a real favorite to focus on in games.

That squat is over 300kgs. At my best, I did 288kgs on the lowly leg sled press machine. I just checked and 200 kgs is considered elite. 300 kgs must be off the charts, right?
For Styles to be that lean, that fast, and with that jumping ability on top of it, "freak athlete" is truly the best way to describe it. I mean, his squat numbers don't make sense given the above. And you don't get there without extreme work and discipline.

I remember reading a long-form piece on Saquon Barkley when he was at Penn State, the workouts he was doing, and the weight he was putting up. I do not like Penn State, but I would not cheer against Barkley after reading about his work ethic. It surprises me none the success he has had in college and now in the NFL.

And Styles has a bright future ahead of him with that similar kind of work ethic to go along with his size and speed. As long as he keeps progressing in his on the field play, the sky is the limit. He made big strides towards the end of last season.

Kirk Ferentz (four more B1G COY Awards than Tressel and Meyer combined)

And that 2002 B1G Championship was shared with the Buckeyes simply because they didn't play each other that year. IIRC the Bucks won something kinda big that year themselves.
And he won Big Ten coach of the year over Tressel that year as well.
