The Buckeyes trailed by one heading into the third but found a way to put two in and take the victory in Ann Arbor

It just goes to show you that if you don’t get run out of the building in the first two periods, you have a much better chance of winning.

The No. 11 Ohio State mens hockey team proved that on Saturday night by hanging with Michigan through two periods and then taking them down in the third. Their valiant comeback effort failed on Friday, as the deficit was just too large to overcome after being dominated in the first two periods. But Michigan was only up one heading into the third last night, and Ohio State took their shot and hit.

The game started on a much better note than Friday’s affair as Nick Schilkey scored his 19th of the year, on the powerplay, just 5:32 into the game. Mason Jobst and Gordi Myer got the assists, extending Jobst’s point streak to twelve games. Schilkey one timed a Jobst feed to put OSU up one early.

Cooper Marody continued his assault on the Buckeyes with his fourth goal in the two game series, unassisted, at 9:01, before Dakota Joshua put OSU back on top just over three minutes later at 12:08. Joshua put in a David Gust rebound for his sixth of the year. Sasha Larocque had the secondary assist.

Michigan apparently didn’t like this, however, as they’d score the next two goals and send the game into the intermission with a 3-2 UM lead. Sam Piazza and Jake Slater scored within 1:27 of each other late in the period and gave the Wolverines all the momentum heading into the dressing room.

Christian Frey had another poor performance, giving up three goals on 15 shots in the first. He’d only last 6:51 into the second when James Sanchez made it 4-2 Michigan. In came Matt Tomkins. For the second straight game, he provided a steadying presence between the pipes and gave OSU a chance for a comeback.

Jobst started the Bucks on the comeback trail just 3:24 later as he redirected a Myer shot on the powerplay to make it 4-3. His eleventh of the year was also assisted by Gust as well.

Max Shuart stopped the Buckeye momentum just over 5:17 later and made it 5-3, restoring the two goal Wolverine lead. That’d be all that Tomkins would give up, however. At 17:49 of the second, John Wiitala scored his ninth of the year to cut down the lead to a single goal heading into intermission, with a good amount of momentum heading the Buckeye direction. Tanner Laczynski and Matthew Weis had the helpers.

Michigan would get no more offensive help in the third period. OSU didn’t dominate, only outshooting Michigan by an 11-8 tally, but with a steadying net presence provided by Tomkins once again, the team made its comeback, and this time came through.

Jobst scored again, this time deflecting a Schilkey pass past UM goalie Hayden Lavigne. Jobst said see ya later boi and the game was tied. Weis had the secondary assist.

The game would remain tied at five until there were just 30 seconds left in regulation. It looked like this one was going to go to overtime, a result Michigan surely would have taken after surviving a comeback attempt on Friday. But Brendon Kearney found Mason Jobst who hit Schilkey in the high slot. Nick didn’t fail and ripped one past Lavigne for his twentieth of the year and the game winner.

The series wasn’t exactly a success for OSU as Michigan, who fell to 9-13-2 overall, is a team this season that Ohio State should beat. They at least attacked more often on Saturday and were able to find the back of the net when they needed it. Plus, showing up at all in the first two periods sure helped for this one.

The biggest question mark is Frey, because if neither goalie is reliable, no matter how well Schilkey plays, it’ll be tough to advance in the conference tournament or even think about the NCAAs. But we shall see when the 13-7-6 Bucks host Minnesota this Friday and Saturday.

LGHL Joey Bosa, NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year’s rise to NFL stardom

Developed here.

Joey Bosa emerged as one of the best defensive players in the NFL this season. He was undoubtedly the best rookie defender, but his accomplishments stack up against the game’s elite as well:

  • Pro Football Focus graded Bosa as the fifth-best overall edge defender this season out of 109 qualified players. The only defenders that were graded higher were: Von Miller, Cameron Jordan. Brandon Graham and Khalil Mack.
  • Bosa’s 11 sacks after Week 12 were tied for the third-most in the league.
  • In addition to his high sack totals, Bosa was consistently able to pressure the quarterback. Bosa had a better pass-rush grade than Von Miller this season, per PFF.

Bosa’s selection as the third-overall pick in the 2016 draft came with plenty of expectations ... or did it? After dominating during his three seasons in Columbus, there was still plenty of debate surrounding how well Bosa’s skills would translate to the NFL. Let’s take a look at how the narrative around Bosa shifted from his last snap in college to his first in the pros.

Ohio State 44 - Notre Dame 28

Bosa’s last career game was over as soon as it began. He had four tackles in a little over two drives of action, though he was ejected following a targeting call during the first quarter. Still, Bosa had nothing else to prove at the college level and this incident wouldn’t affect his decision to enter the 2016 NFL Draft.

And why wouldn’t Bosa declare early for the draft? He was Mel Kiper’s No. 1 overall selection in his first mock draft and he had as prestigious of a background as anyone could ask for. Two-time consensus All-American, best defensive player on a national championship winning team, the son of a former NFL defensive lineman etc. Bosa was the full package.

But then things began to change.

The questions

The first round of mock drafts is always an exciting time, but they’re (understandably) a shell of what they will become. Due to the combine, interviews and extensive film study, prospects who were once thought of as sure-fire first rounders have been known to fall during the lead up to the draft.

First came an idea that Bosa may have already reached his ceiling. Columnists also pointed out that, “He had trouble turning the corner,” and his ”effort was shaky.” Bosa’s elite pass-rushing prowess was more a result of his technical ability and strength. The “elite bend” and “fast-twitch explosion” wasn’t as evident as it was with former Ohio State defensive end Noah Spence and this didn’t sit well with online evaluators.

While Bosa’s on-field performance was one piece of the puzzle, others reached further and decided to focus on Bosa’s one-game suspension from his Junior year. Upon finding out he was suspended for the first game of the season, Bosa moved into his own apartment in an attempt to “lay low for a little while.” Despite the mature decision, no further issues and a resounding recommendation from Urban Meyer, Bosa was mentioned in the same sentence as Greg Hardy and Randy Gregory by one (allegedly) prominent media member.

Then the combine came around.

NFL combine

The NFL combine was a mix of good and bad for Bosa depending on what was being reported. He “only” had a 32 inch vertical and his 4.86 40-yard dash made more people question his athletic upside. While some were not inspired by his results, ESPN took the liberty of making an awfully large comparison:

Joey Bosa's combine results look awfully familiar: pic.twitter.com/0K7b5r9E6l

— ESPN Stats & Info (@ESPNStatsInfo) February 28, 2016

The graphic failed to mention that Watt had an extra 15-plus pounds on Bosa during the combine, but the damage was done. Eventually, Bosa himself had to let the world know that he was also tired of the comparisons.

With the draft approaching, Bosa was falling more and more in mock drafts around the country. Was it possible that he could even fall out of the top-10 picks? According to some, yes.

And then...

The draft

After all the hoopla, Bosa was the first non-quarterback off the board. The Chargers noted that they were essentially set on picking Bosa as early as January. Furthermore, he was slotted to play 3-4 defensive end, a position that LGHL’s own fearless leader Luke Zimmermann pointed out as a possibility back in March.

shrugggg.jpg

Being selected with the No. 3 overall calmed some of the doubters, but not all. After months of debate on whether he was worth a top-five pick, the conversation turned to how high his ceiling was a pro. The overall consensus was that Bosa would never amount to a perennial double-digit sack guy.

Then came the contract issue.

The contract dispute and injury setbacks

Months passed after the draft and all of a sudden Bosa was the only rookie holdout remaining. Then things got ugly. The Chargers went as far as issuing a statement via twitter that pointed out how large Bosa’s signing bonus was, how it had more money this calendar year than anyone except Wentz, etc.

Bosa’s refusal to sign his contract, combined with the Chargers’ public disapproval, didn’t sit too well with his teammates. Starting tight end Antonio Gates (who was eventually suspended the first four games of the season for PEDs) told Bosa to “man up”. There’s no doubt that it was important for Bosa to get to training camp as soon as possible, though things weren’t that simple.

The reason why Bosa didn’t immediately sign his contract was because the contract had terms that no top-five pick had agreed to post-CBA. First-round draft picks LaDainian Tomlinson, Quentin Jammer, Philip Rivers and Shawne Merriman all missed extended time during training camp after being drafted by the Chargers, so it’s hard to give the organization the benefit of the doubt.

Finally, on August 29th, less than two weeks before the beginning of the season, Bosa signed. He then suffered a hamstring injury after just one practice and was forced to miss the first four games of the season. The likes of Dak Prescott and Ezekiel Elliott were playing so well that Bosa had become an afterthought by the time he was ready to play. He would never be an afterthought for the remainder of the season.

The return of Bosa

Bosa’s first game came against Derek Carr and the Oakland Raiders. He racked up two sacks and four TFL’s against an offensive line that Playerprofiler.com graded as the No. 1 overall pass-blocking unit in the league. Bosa wasn’t done, as it turned out he was pretty good at the whole “getting to the quarterback” part of his job::

— Nathan Jahnke (@PFF_NateJahnke) January 2, 2017

Sure, Bosa’s impeccable technique and strength played a big role in his dominance, but Bosa was also making plays out of sheer effort. One such example is the time when he ran nearly 20 yards downfield after the quarterback released the ball to chase down Amari Cooper:

Watch the hustle herepic.twitter.com/fTkmCP9Ldb

— Jason McIntyre (@jasonrmcintyre) October 12, 2016

Bosa also showed no trouble in taking on the game’s elite. Former No. 1 overall pick Eric Fisher experience first hand just how difficult Bosa could be to handle:

It was no surprise when Bosa was named the league’s defensive rookie of the year. It was a long 12 months between his last college game and first professional appearance, but not much had changed: Bosa was still often the best player on any football field he stepped on. During the buildup to the NFL draft we can become susceptible to recency bias, but it turns out the first instinct on Bosa was right all along. Somethings just never change.

On the road in Ann Arbor, Thad Matta’s squad got the job done.

It was another slow start for the Buckeyes, and another tight finish.

After back-to-back losses in conference play, Ohio State needed to make a statement against the Michigan Wolverines on Saturday night. It wasn’t emphatic, but they got what they needed in the end.

The Buckeyes (14-10, 4-7 in conference) committed a slew of unforced errors in the first half, turning the ball over 10 times before the break. Those made for a very stilted early going, from throwing away a fast-break opportunity after a JaQuan Lyle steal to some ill-conceived passing after rebounds on the offensive end.

After jumping out to a 7-0 lead, the Wolverines were able to retain control for most of the first half thanks to some strong play from Muhammad Abdur-Rahkman and Derrick Walton, Jr. The Buckeyes were led by Marc Loving and sub Micah Potter, who added seven points apiece.

Ohio State kicked it into gear late in the first half, taking a 36-35 lead at the break thanks to some stout defense and some sharp Marc Loving shooting. C.J. Jackson, who started over Lyle, was cold from the field but added some serious value by grabbing a handful of boards. A 7-0 run tied the game with two minutes to play in the first—Trevor Thompson buckled in and did some dirty work for Ohio State—and the Buckeyes saw their first lead with under a minute to go before the half.

In the second, a Marc Loving three kicked things off for the Buckeyes, and Thad Matta’s starters got the Wolverine crowd riled up on an excellent block-save-forced turnover sequence from Trevor Thompson and C.J. Jackson. Physically, Ohio State looked to be very much in control of the game.

Some poor shooting from the Wolverines and a few nifty Trevor Thompson finishes put the Buckeyes up seven at the 12-minute mark, but Derrick Walton and co. didn’t go away quietly. Big shooting from Walton brought the Wolverines back within four points on several occasions, and D.J. Wilson added his own clutch trey to make the Buckeyes start sweating.

With five minutes to play, several key Buckeye contributors found themselves in foul trouble, and the Wolverines capitalized. A pair of Wilson free throws brought the game within one, and a Derrick Walton three (again) tied the ball game a minute later for Michigan.

Trevor Thompson recorded his 11th double-double of the year, passing that mark with four minutes to play. D.J. Wilson tied things up with two minutes to play with another clutch three, and a Marc Loving kiss at the other end gave the Buckeyes back the lead.

With under a minute to go, the Buckeyes were able to force a bad Michigan timeout and take advantage of the bonus to shoot free throws to help put the game away. But another Derrick Walton three let the Wolverines come roaring back to life with 26 ticks on the clock, making it a one-point game. Still, it wasn’t enough to steal back the lead, and a pair of Marc Loving free throws sealed it.

3 things we learned

1) If the Buckeyes are going to make it to the postseason, it’ll be done by rebounding. With five minutes to play in the first half, Ohio State led Michigan on the boards 13-5. The Wolverines didn’t record an offensive rebound until the two-minute mark in the first. It’s an area where the Buckeyes have been able to consistently produce this season, and it’s been painfully obvious that they’re not controlling the glass in games in which they get dominated.

Ditto for turnovers. The Buckeyes still get sloppy with the basketball, and the freebies they gave the Wolverines were a big part of the reason the game went down to the wire. (Look no further than the defensive rebound that led to a telegraphed pass being picked off and turned into a Derrick Walton 3-pointer at the 8-minute mark for proof.)

2) We still don’t know what we have with Marc Loving. The Buckeye senior has taken a lot of criticism during his time in Columbus regarding his effort and consistency, but he’s capable of great heights when his shots start falling. His three-pointer to open up the second half was a catalyst for the Buckeyes to take control of the game, and his 19 points were a good showing against a solid opponent.

There are plenty of legitimate criticisms of Loving’s game; his predilection for turnovers has helped doom the Buckeyes on more than one occasion this year. But he’s also shown that he can hit big shots (3-7 from 3-point range in this game), and has been around the block enough times to handle the pressure that comes with games that stay close late. After this many years at OSU, you’d like to see Loving showing up more emphatically and more consistently, but you can’t write off his contributions.

3) When the Buckeyes are on, they’re a tournament team. There are stretches in plenty of Ohio State games when they play as though they’re ready to take on quality opposition in March. Against the Wolverines, the Buckeyes made their free throws, cleaned up the glass, and showed us what team basketball looks like. Thad Matta used his bench—Micah Potter in particular—to great effect, and it appears he’s committed to the eight-man rotation (as opposed to the seven-man squad he took so much flak for a few years ago) for the duration.

Ohio State went 24-28 from the free throw line, markedly improving on an area of serious weakness for this young team. They also dominated Michigan in the rebounding column, 42-24. The game ended up a win for Ohio State, but they’re still going to have to climb out of the Big Ten’s basement somehow. Still, there’s light somewhere up above them, and it might not be too late to seize it.

From holdout to budding superstar. Well done, JB.

Joey Bosa’s NFL tenure got off to a bit of a contentious start.

After an extensive holdout in an era where post-draft holdouts are virtually unheard of, Bosa and the then San Diego Chargers compromised and Bosa returned to training camp just before the start of the regular season.

While an injury slowed his ability to make an immediate impact, the second that Bosa was healthy, opposing offensive lines were at his mercy. From the second that he first stepped on the field for NFL regular season action, the former Ohio State defensive line standout looked exactly like he did in scarlet & gray: dominant.

Bosa finished his rookie campaign with 10.5 sacks, a forced fumble, and 41 combined tackles (29 solo). Anyone who watched the now Los Angeles Chargers for any extended period of time saw how often unstoppable the rookie-in-name-only was.

The most exciting part for the man with the twitter handle ‘jbbigbear’? The best is yet to come. As his team relocates, he’ll have a chance to win over new hearts and minds as opposing quarterbacks learn to dread heading to visit LA knowing that Bosa will just about already be there waiting for them in the back field.

And though his former teammate Ezekiel Elliott was snubbed for the NFL’s Offensive Rookie honor (which went to Zeke’s teammate Dak Prescott), you’ll be hard pressed to remember the last time a pair of OSU rookies had the kind of impact that these two did during the 2016/17 NFL season.

Kelsey Mitchell’s big day helped the Buckeyes roll to their seventh straight win.

The Ohio State women’s basketball team ran its winning streak to seven games with a dominating 96-68 win on the road against Wisconsin. Kelsey Mitchell, the Buckeyes’ All-American point guard, was red-hot, scoring 32 points to lead the way.

Mitchell, a junior from Cincinnati, shot 11-for-13, including six three-point makes, and also contributed four assists despite spending the fourth quarter on the bench. Stephanie Mavunga also notched her 11th double-double of the season with 13 points and 11 rebounds, and Tori McCoy hit double figures with 11 points.

The Badgers’ leading scorer Cayla McMorris scored 14, but all of those came from the free throw line as she missed all nine shots she attempted from the floor. Suzanne Gilreath added 14 in the losing effort.

Ohio State, ranked 14th in the country, now sits 11-1 in Big Ten action, 21-5 overall, and will now have an eight-day layoff between games. The Buckeyes remain in second place in the conference standings behind undefeated Maryland, which is currently the third-ranked team nationally in the AP poll.

Mavunga and Mitchell spurred Ohio State to a quick 6-0 lead, each scoring three apiece. Mavunga also had five rebounds in the game’s first four minutes. What followed, though, was a three minute Buckeye field goal drought that allowed Wisconsin to pull within 6-4 at the midway point of the quarter.

Shayla Cooper knocked down a three-pointer to end the cold spell, and was then the recipient of a pretty dime from Mitchell. A pair of Mitchell layups in rapid succession led to a 9-0 run and a 15-4 lead for Ohio State.

Mitchell’s scorching start continued with a pair of threes on consecutive possessions, two of the three she made in the opening frame en route to 17 early points. The Badgers struggled with the Buckeyes’ full-court pressure, turning it over six times and shooting just 23 percent, and trailed 25-11 after ten minutes of play.

In the second quarter, a Mitchell triple from the Kohl Center logo on the floor and another from about three steps behind the arc at the top of the key pushed the lead out to 37-17. Wisconsin continued to struggle shooting the ball, hitting just 4-for-18 from the floor, and couldn’t make a dent in the Ohio State advantage.

Compounding the Badgers’ problems was a field goal drought of nearly four minutes, which helped the Buckeyes hit the locker room with a 49-29 lead. Mitchell nearly equaled Wisconsin’s output with 25 points.

Gilreath was the lone bright spot for the home team, tallying 12 points on 4-for-7 shooting from three-point range. McMorris was held to just two points, both of which came from the free throw line.

Nebraska slowed things down to a halt in the third quarter, playing a deliberate half-court game and getting Ohio State into foul trouble quickly. The Badgers were in the bonus within three minutes.

It was Mavunga and Mitchell who once again paced the Buckeyes in the early going, combining for nine of the team’s first 12 points. The scarlet and gray then made five straight shots from the field as the lead ballooned to 69-40.

Mitchell was pulled by head coach Kevin McGuff with two minutes remaining in the third, but Ohio State just kept rolling. Linnae Harper, Asia Doss, and McCoy all contributed buckets, and the defense held Wisconsin without a make for nearly five full minutes to head to the final quarter up 77-48.

With the game in hand, McGuff gave the bulk of the fourth period playing time to the bench, and both sides had their struggles. But every player who saw the floor for the Buckeyes scored at least one point, and the squad notched its fifth straight game with at least 87 points.

Ohio State will not hit the court again until next Sunday, February 12, at home in Columbus against Iowa. That game is scheduled to tip-off at noon ET, and will air live on Big Ten Network.

The Buckeyes hope to rebound from a close loss against Maryland.

Despite a six-point loss, the Ohio State Buckeyes played far better than expected against a ranked Maryland team in Columbus Tuesday. Junior forward Jae’Sean Tate and senior forward Marc Loving both tallied impressive performances versus the Terps, and junior center Trevor Thompson rebounded from his horrendous showing against Iowa with a nine-point effort. It was heart-wrenching in many ways as the Buckeyes were able to come back within one point in the second half after a halftime deficit.

“That was a gut-check win for us,” said Maryland head coach Mark Turgeon. “I thought Ohio State was terrific. They were hard for us to guard, shot 48 percent against us.”

Of course, the Buckeyes’ inconsistency has been the one consistent theme throughout the season, as brilliant performances against the likes of Maryland and UConn are tempered with horrendous losses to Florida Atlantic and Iowa.

With the loss to Maryland, Ohio State has lost three of its last four games. It was a better performance against Maryland, certainly, but in the words of Thad Matta, “we played better, but we didn’t play good enough.”

Now, the Buckeyes head to Michigan for their single matchup this season against the Wolverines. Ohio State leads the all-time series versus Michigan 95-76, with Matta’s coaching record at 19-7. The Buckeyes, however, haven’t won in Ann Arbor since 2011, and have dropped four of their last six to Michigan.

The Wolverines are sitting at 14-8 on the season and are 4-5 in the Big Ten behind longtime coach John Bellein. Most recently, Michigan lost to in-state rival Michigan State by eight points in East Lansing.

Ann Arbor has been a tough environment for Ohio State basketball in recent years, and this year will likely be no different. Still, the Buckeyes have shown that they are capable of playing at a level to beat Michigan on the road — it all depends on which team shows up on the court.

Numbers to know

47.3%

Michigan has proven to be one of the best shooting teams in the conference, hitting over 47 percent from field goal range. The Wolverines are also hitting 38.2 percent from behind the arc — something that the Buckeyes have struggled to defend this season, allowing over 34 percent shooting from three-point range. On the flip side, Michigan is worst in the Big Ten in defending both field goals and three-pointers, allowing 47.3 percent from the field and 42.4 percent from behind the arc. The Buckeyes will need to defend Michigan’s balanced offense, which boasts four players averaging double-digit scoring this season.

78.8%

Unlike the Buckeyes, Michigan has proven to be extremely consistent from the free — throw line this season, hitting nearly 80 percent of their shots from the charity stripe — the best average in the Big Ten. In fact, all of Michigan’s starting five shoot greater than 70 percent on free throw attempts. In fact, senior guard Derrick Walton Jr. has been shooting 90 percent from the line. Free throws have been a struggle the entire season for the Buckeyes, who cannot afford to create a gap against a far better free throw shooting team in Michigan. Ohio State will need to stay out of foul trouble — especially Thompson — to keep Michigan off the line.

1-4

The Buckeyes have not fared well on the road this season, especially in conference play, with losses to Illinois, Wisconsin, Minnesota and Iowa. And these games, for the most part, have not been close, with Ohio State losing by an average of 12.75 points on the road in conference play. In fact, including the gutsy, last-second win versus Nebraska, the Buckeyes have been outscored 393-343 over five games. Tonight, they face a tough road environment in Ann Arbor, but things don’t get much easier from there, as Ohio State still has a tough road schedule remaining for the rest of the season, including matchups at Maryland, Michigan State and Penn State.

Cast of characters

Ohio State

Marc Loving

The senior forward had an impressive effort against Maryland Tuesday, going 4-for-5 from three-point range on his way to an 18-point performance in the Buckeyes’ loss. Tonight’s matchup marks Loving’s fifth game against Michigan over his career, a series in which he has averaged five points per game and just under five rebounds. On the season, Loving has averaged 11.7 points and 5.1 rebounds per game for Ohio State. He will need to bring that scoring effort against a team that is one of the best in the Big Ten in scoring defense, allowing just 65.8 points per game.

Jae’Sean Tate

The Buckeyes as a team may not have played with much heart throughout the season, but Tate has been a rare bright spot in terms of his on-court effort. Against Maryland, Tate recorded a team-high 20 points to go along with four assists, four rebounds and two steals. He leads the team in scoring with 14.3 points per game, and is second in rebounding with 6.2 per game. He also brings energy to a defense that has often proved lacking, leading the team in steals with 23 on the year. Tate will need to be the Buckeyes’ spark plug once again on both sides of the ball against Michigan to both drive the lane to score and to defend an excellent shooting team.

Michigan

Zak Irvin

The 6-foot-6 guard leads the Wolverines in scoring with 13.7 points per game and has averaged 3.4 assists per game. However, the senior is coming off his first scoreless game of the season, having shot 0-for-8 from the field, a game in which Irvin was recovering from the flu. Irvin, a captain, has been the emotional leader of the Wolverines squad for several seasons, and has enabled his team to play with the emotion and heart that the Buckeyes have so been lacking this year. Ohio State will need to contain Irvin both in his scoring and in his ability to rally his team.

Moritz Wagner

The sophomore forward from Berlin is third on the team in scoring, averaging 11.9 points per game, but has the third-best shooting percentage in the Big Ten, hitting 60 percent of his shots from field goal range. The 6-foot-11 forward plays as center in Michigan’s lineup, which does not feature a true center. The big man is also a strong shooter from three-point range, hitting over 44 percent of his attempts from behind the arc. Ohio State will need to effectively defend Wagner on the perimeter, knowing that any of Michigan’s shooters can effectively hit shots from both in the lane and from range.
